My housemates and I have mixed feelings about Halo 3 after putting in two weeks of pretty solid multiplayer games. The game just seems fairly unreliable and inconsistent. I'm wondering if any of you might feel the same or have any insight. Here are some of my thoughts:
1. Melees have a tendency to show you hitting a guy, play the auditory cue of the impact, and then show your death mere moments later. On top of that, when you do manage to execute the kill without dying, there is a decent pause between when you hit the guy, and when he goes down. While satisfying when it works, the whole system feels very disconnected from what you see on the screen. I used to be a close-quarters player in halo 2, but I've had to avoid that type of playstyle in halo 3 due to melee contests being such a crap shoot. Anyone who gives a crap about being competitive knows that something that only works half the time is as good as worthless.
2. Grenades never seem to act the same way twice. In one game I'll lay a frag at my foe's feet and follow it up with a headshot from a BR for a quick kill, and in another I'll do the same thing only to find that the enemy's shield's are fine and dandy. I guess I can't rely on grenades for anything other than chaos generators.
3. The weak guns in the game guarantee that whenever you get into a fight, the guy you're shooting at will be able to take your shields down before you kill him (sniping excluded). This means that if you catch two enemies with their backs to you, you can't do shit because they will both have plenty of time to turn around and start laying into you. Forget about using a grenade to soften them up, because if you're off by a foot, they don't do squat. This is compounded by the fact that the guns are extremely inaccurate, so you're forced into close battles where you are almost always guaranteed to take a few shots from the target before you drop him.
This emphasis on weak guns means that you can only truly get a leg up on the other team by moving with your teammates. Random strangers on the internet rarely band together like a well oiled machine, and most games dissolve into every-man-for-himself. You're then left dealing with all the crap mentioned above.
On top of all that, we've had issues with reloading not working if you tap the button too quickly, or guns not quickly getting picked up, even if you've been holding down the pickup button long before you arrived at the gun.
Really, the thing that made me most irate was a territories game on Last Resort. I had the bubble shield, and had almost finished capturing 4. As I expected, one guy finally started BR'ing me. Psh, easy. I'll just drop my bubble shield and finish capturing this territory. Nope. The bubble shield disappeared when it hit the ground, and I died quickly thereafter. This kind of shit kills the fun factor real fast, and it happens way too often. And no, we weren't lagging. The bars were in the full green.
