Some of you may recall a little prediciment I was in last night. Well, I have a tale to tell. I brought pictures.

Here's the situation.

01-TheSituation.jpg

We've got a full Brute pack, consisting of a Chieftain with a FRC, a Captain with a Brute Shot, about ten soldiers and two on jump packs. Oh, and that WRAITH. Me? I'm hiding behind the two buildings in the rear, where I hit a checkpoint. The ones all the dudes are staring at.

I begin by firing off the last two rounds of FRC from the last Chieftain at the Wraith, and then head for the Battle Rifle cache Siamesedreamer told me of. (Thank god.)

00-OpeningSalvo.jpg

From there, take out the two jump pack Brutes.

02-TakingouttheJumpPackBrutes.jpg

If I'm lucky, their Carbines will slide down the side of the rocks with the corpses. I'm lucky, and start thinning the pack a bit. I alternate sides of the buildings to allow a few shots to be fired before the Wraith can pivot, target and fire.

03-ThinningthePack.jpg

The Wraith pilot never, ever fires just one round. It's several or none for this pyrotechnic fan. Poking my head around a corner, door or window results in a sustained volley. No room for error.

04-Consequences.jpg

After firing from over a dozen different vantage points, I've taken down most of the pack, including the Captain. The Chieftain and a few soldiers head deep into cover and refuse to come out. It's time to change positions to get an angle. Which is risky, to put it lightly.

05-Re-positioning.jpg

Explosions going off every few feet behind me, I get over the ledge and into cover. Time to chip away at the Chieftain......

06-FinalChieftain.jpg

....who has an epic shitton of health. I'm out of ammo. Hopefully the Wraith doesn't see me on the way back, as it's harder to climb than to jump down.

07-HeadingforAmmo.jpg

w00t! Time finish off the big gold bastard. Too bad I've been spotted and spend the next minute dodging plasma mortars.

08-BackforMoreBaby.jpg

It takes only three bursts of fire - he doesn't even get a chance to fire off a final parting gift - and the Chieftain drops.

09-DeadChieftain.jpg

I need that FRC to deal with the Wraith. I risk a dive in, snag it and back out to the cargo containers. Now I think I've actually got a shot at finishing this particular fight. It's showdown time.

10-BattlewiththeWraith.jpg

I'm painfully aware that if I miss and hit the edge on either side, I blow myself up. And that I've got about one and a half seconds before the Wraith re-targets and nails me. But the first salvo connects, and after some dodging, so does the second. The driver is down, leaving the (still intact) Wrath stranded. But the gunner is still alive.

11-WherestheChief.jpg

We play cat and mouse for a few, and then he loses me as I sneak back around the rear and into the pipes.

12-Peek-a-Boo.jpg

Boo.

13-CatchThis.jpg

Catch this, ya little bastard.

14-Surprise.jpg

Oh, you can't catch. You're dead!

15-IHasaWraith.jpg

I has a Wraith.

The saved film says I spent an hour and 24 minutes on this, and the final, successful battle took twenty minutes. Twenty minutes of countless close-calls, desperate dives for ammo and pant-wettingly intense firefights. But I beat it. This, is why I love Halo, right here.

Tomorrow, the vehicle brawl at the end of the level. Can't wait to finish this off and do it all again, in co-op. I could use the backup. :lol

I've seen some guys with "7th Column" logos next to their military rank and skill number, how do you get one?

If you have a Bnet profile, just go there and go to "Edit Profile" or something like that. The same section you go to put "bungie.net" on your H2. Right below that will be the option to put the 7th column logo next to your name. Click "show".

Bungie.net profile.

Also I've forgotten what charged up plasma shots can do to enemy vehicles. I'm using it constantly now. Very useful on the harder difficulties with wraiths.

OH YEAH! Me, Dreamer, and The Drasnian all took on Sierra 117 on Legendary tonight with Fog, Famine, IWHBYD, and the skull that upgrades everyone. We just breezed through that shit. I wanna try it with all the skulls on sometime. We got the 15,000 achievement no problem. It was pretty awesome.

Later that night, I had a Big Team game with 30 kills. http://www.bungie.net/Stats/GameStatsHalo3.aspx?gameid=24233779&player=Uno Ill Nino
My e-penis felt pretty huge at that point. :) Best part of that whole game? Before it started, the other team just started calling my team "fags" and stuff. We didn't even provoke it or anything. Gotta say, tea-bagging their skulls into the dirt felt pretty good after that. :D

It was a pain my first time through when I used guns but I beat that part fairly easily on my second time through (Heroic with multiple skulls). First I took out most of the grunts with my battle rifle and then parked a warthog somewhat behind a building. The Brutes were mostly focused on the marines and stuff and not even looking at me, I then got on the gunner and mowed everyone down - the only difficult part was the fuel rod chieftan brute. When the phantom dropship came to drop off another round of enemies I jumped out of the hog and took cover inside a building then went back and repeated.

Sure it's kind of cheap but it worked. I was trying to go for the time bonus and that method saved a ton of time.

:lol Don't you just love people like that? :lol

I have a question: Is anyone else experiencing as many assholes on matchmaking as I am? I've heard new lows. Some guy tonight was ragging on me because I have a college degree. Since when is that bad? Oh, and it wasn't even on a ranked match. It was social (shotty snipers, can you believe that?)

Quick, that guy has an education, let's mock him! :lol

I haven't noticed anywhere near as many assholes. Some racist pricks, but for the most part people just leave after I finish kicking their asses. The fact that you don't have to hear them in ranked play, as well as the fact that most of your bullets actually hit them this time makes for an awesome experience.

I've actually found that the number of assholes I encounter has gone way down. I dunno if I've been lucky or what but those people with mics that I've played against have mostly been relatively local - either Australian or New Zealander, and most of the time older, which is completely great. I've so far avoided the homophobic 12 year-olds and drunk or high North American fratboys.

God bless the universal mute, though. I'll usually turn it on even if the conversation is amiable just because I'm not a very social person online.

How did he even know that?

'Hi I'm, Memphis Reigns and I have a college degree. Shotty Snipers anyone?'

Exactly the same as me, really. The only racist I've found so far was from the Beta. I've had a few little kids, but the most they've done is asked if anyone wants to cheat for achievements. So apart from the "that's bullshit, mate" every so often at the end of the match, it's all been ace.

Finally got around to putting Halo 3 in. Pretty awesome. Although in just a few hours I've found myself halfway through the campaign already. But that's fine, I'm only playing on normal and I haven't even touched online stuff yet. I like how the dashboard has changed such that there is a special entry for Halo 3 now when you look at people's profile. :lol

Ok so after playing this game a fair bit now, I feel I can offer my complete thoughts.

It's a really great game. Let's get that out of the way for a start. My friends and I had a blast playing through on legendary in co-op. The combat is the best I've seen on a console FPS. And the vehicles and options available to the player are probably better or on par with everything I've played on PC too. Not only the fact that there are plenty of things to jump into and drive / fly around. But the fact that they are just so much fun to do so. There are plenty of omg wtf moments (giant ships flying over head and massive enemy constructs crawling over buildings) and it had us all saying "holy shit" far too many times. And really, the simple fact that this one game could keep us all entertained long enough to sit on our couches for 7 or more hours until we finished it, is a good enough indicator that this is a game that everyone should play. I'm not sure I've ever played a game that's kept me interested that long without at least some thought to wanting to stop for a while.

The death match / multiplayer options are varied and pretty awesome. They definitely work really well and I now can understand why people love this series. Once again this is the first console FPS I've seen that actually works in a multiplayer environment and doesn't frustrate me with the controls. As I said to my friends to which they agreed, if we hadn't all been so jaded on the whole FPS multiplayer experience (all of us being Quake players and PC FPS gamers in general for a decade), Halos multiplayer would be blowing us all away right now. Instead the experience was more like "holy shit, this actually works on console... But, we've done it all before a billion times. So, meh". But if you aren't so jaded on it all then all the power in the world to you, and Halo would be awesome and the only console FPS worth playing.

The thing that usually makes me fall in love with a game though is the setting, art style, atmosphere and story. Unfortunately this is where I feel the game falls apart in a catastrophic way. The story is just kind of stupid and never really flows very well. The voice acting on everything besides the female characters are horrible and make me cringe every time. It certainly has atmosphere but not the sort that usually grabs me. IE: Space marines in corridors don't make my pants tight. But I can understand if it does for other people.

So in the end. Now that I've finally played a Halo game for the first time, and experienced everything it has to offer. My basic summary is that I can understand now why people love this game and why it's so popular. I can also understand the high review scores and even the 10 from Edge. But now that I'm finished with most of the single player achievements and nearly done with the few remaining, I won't be singing its praises to the heavens in times to come nor give it a place in my favourite games. It will go down as one of the best co-op experiences I've had though.

I'm having hard time playing this game without the grunt piñata head option now. Infact, I want everything in the game to give me the children cheering and confetti's popping out when I get a head shot. I want it in MP too. IT'S TOO ADDICTING!!!

Thank goodness you can't make that happen in real life.... or can you? 8D

I got lucky though. The things you pull are 'holy shit' grade awesome. There's no way I'll be pulling a perfection medal in my life. :lol

Wow, I d/l your long distance overkill, and at first I thought you locked on to the Mongoose, then got the guys in the Hog, but I watched it again and followed the missile and see that it hits a guy standing on the base. :lol

:lol :lol I couldn't believe he just stood there that whole time. I watched from his point of view and he never saw it coming.

In case anyone is as oddly obsessed/fixated on the rank system as I am, keep an eye on this guy's profile:

http://www.bungie.net/stats/PlayerStatsHalo3.aspx?player=Darkid X

I've been loading it up every couple hours all day now :lol :lol He's SO CLOSE to obtaining the highest rank (general). He has the required 600 EXP - all he has to do is hit level 50 in any ranked playlist. And he's been sitting at 49 for hours now. So all he has to do is gain that FINAL rank-up and bam, he's a general. I'm 99% certain that he'll be the first - he's the only brigadier that I know of, in fact.

You can see all the ranks listed here:

http://www.bungie.net/Stats/Halo3/RankHistory.aspx?player=Darkid X

For those that are confused, once you become an officer (the silver ranks), you need to hit a certain amount of EXP *and* reach a certain skill in a ranked playlist in order to be promoted. This system means I should be able to hit Captain eventually, and MAYBE Major, if I go on a good streak. The higher ranks are likely to remain out of my reach.

I've been watching his rankings also. I just want to see what the general medal looks like. He should get it tomorrow.

Yeah, he's been playing Team Slayer all evening and I'm pretty certain his 49 is in Lone Wolves.

Does anyone know if you have to MAINTAIN your ranked playlist level to keep your grade, or just hit it? Like, if he hits 50 and becomes a general, will be be demoted back down to brigadier if he gets knocked back down to a 49? Or do you just have to hit a number once for it to count?

Gek (green) and I (yellow) racing for some points in rocket race, the best way to play halo EVER

I still have yet to play rocket race. I do feel like I'm missing out on something special, so if any Gaf people party up to play that, send me an invite. GoTDiGGz

All that matters is Highest Rank Achieved, as far as I know.

That's what I'm hoping. I'm looking forward to Bungie eventually opening up new Ranked playlists like they did in Halo 2. I intend on taking advantage of their newness and playing a TON the first few days to achieve a rank that I normally wouldn't be able to achieve, after the good players had separated themselves from the average. :lol

I just dug into the ARG, (thanks button basher, IBeechu, Dhalo, ect).

HOLY SHIT. So many questions answered, so many things in the game make more sense now.

Now i just need to find all the terminals, I'm starting to... understand.
Feel like throwing a link up with everything in the one place? I didn't bother with the ARG because I didn't feel like searching for everything. There's a few questions I have about the game myself that I'd like answered so hopefully whatever you've stumbled upon helps.

I was promoted to Captain when i got to lv 20, im demoted to 18 now (would it be lame if i blame it on my teammates? check my stats xD) And still am a Captain, so you dont have to maintain your level thank god.

Whats this higest skill about? Do i gain individual skill level for each game type? Rank is eaned through experience yeh, so no matter how bad i do, my rank will always go up.

Is this right?

Below officer level, rank is just about experience. You get EXP for winning or tying a team game, or finishing in the top half of a free-for-all game. If you quit a game, you get -1 EXP.

At lieutenant and above, rank is a combination of level and EXP. Your level (skill) goes up when you perform better than other players in a game.

After hours of telling myself "alright, you're going to save and quit after this" I just wrapped up Legendary single player...around 4:55AM. Sometimes we must sacrifice abit for the Chief. :D

It was some of the most rewarding, frustrating love/hate gameplay I've had in awhile. Wouldn't trade it for the world. It really does force you to change your tactics from 'normal'. Way more sniping, thinking about battles before charging into them, manage weapon resources, really taking advantage of the power-ups (the stealth and invincibility ones saved my ass many a time), and sometimes just plain hauling ass/hiding from a firefight as much as possible. I'd say Halo 2 was more difficult on Legendary, but only because it got frustratingly cheap at times. Great game - Bungie wrapped things up properly.

Now to get some co-op and skull action going...

uk estimate sales figures of halo 3.

http://www.eurogamer.net/article.php?article_id=84591

With the UK Xbox 360 installed base at 1.4 millon in the UK, estimates suggest that the Bungie-developed game shifted more than 466,000 copies in the UK alone in its first four days on sale. That figure is dwarfed only by Grand Theft Auto: San Andreas, which shifted an incredible 677,000 copies in two days when it was released on PS2 back in October 2004 - but, then again, the PS2 installed base in the UK at the time was some 6.4 million according to Chart-Track.

Correct. And it only works for multiplayer saved films. Campaign is a no go. Pressing the back button after a spectacular snipe or explosion for an instant replay blows my mind every time! All i need now is a way to get my saved films from 360 to PC and im golden....

You need a capture card.

And Im still hoping that we get an update that allows rewinding in campaign once Bungie figure out how to make it work. Believe.

The next best thing would be able to load/skip a campaign saved film from and to one of the 3 major points each level has.

I played campaign for a bit on coop with some friends, but I had some weird issues. For instance it seemed like ambient sound was completely absent, no birds or wildlife chirping, and when the ships came in they weren't making any sounds despite the engines causing wind to circulate around. Is this a known bug or is it like this intentionally? Made me feel really disconnected from the world :\

Also, whats the deal with only being able to go into first person view on a saved film for the character you played? Thats really odd. I had a friend send me his saved film of the same match and I can only go into FPV on him when I load his match. I'd assume its to save filesize but that really seems bizarre to not keep track of that for all the players.

I have an external capture device but it wont capture in 60Hz (PAL60) which, unfortunitely, Halo 3 requires my output to be to run on my UK TV (as far as im aware). PLease feel free to correct my ignorance though :D

I wouldnt mind the ability to create clips of campaign too if thats not too much to ask Bungie ;) Peeeeeeeeaaaase?
