Cool. This post was actually perfect timing, considering the fact that I was gonna go sound-system hunting (mainly for the release of Halo 3) tomorrow. But yeah, I guess I'll have to check these out. The price is a bit steep though, but I'll see. While we're on the topic, anybody have any good recommendations for a nice, yet not too steep priced 5.1 HTIB?

Onkyo. Onkyo. Onkyo.

This has piqued my interest in what people will be using for their first Halo 3 playthrough.

Personally, my home setup isn't nearly awesome enough for me to first experience the greatness. Thus, I'll be booking it to the office sometime around 12:15AM to play it either in our theater room or in one of our quiet "playing rooms" - 40" Sony XBR4 1080p, fed via HDMI, with a Denon 3805 and some B&W speakers perfectly arranged. Mmm, sound treated walls, adjustable lighting, and a comfy couch. Can't wait!

I'm upgrading things in an odd order. I'm standard def still. First is to get surround sound which I anticipate to happen later this year. After Playing Bioshock with a normal set of inner-ear buds I really appreciate hearing the sound around you, not just coming from in front. So it would be purchasing a good pair of headphones, followed by getting the sound setup up and running later this year, and late spring I'll be asking GAF what kind of HDTV to get.

Also in unrelated news, our main man "GT: IckyMad Dogg" who has Halo 3, has decided to go back to playing some Gears...

I'm appalled.

Clearly that's Disraeli Gears, which he's rocking out to as he plays marathon sessions of Halo 3, no?

32" Sony Bravia KDL-32S20L1 and a older Sony DTS 5.1 sound system. I'm going to upgrade my sound system next year, not in time for Halo 3.

I've said this before, but I'm going to say it again. I think Halo 3 is going to spark a lot of home entertainment system upgrades.

Looking back through the thread I'd say it really is. Norhal's even joined in on the fun with a new TV, to show off in his pictures.

If you watch a horror movie with those things on, you wll shit your pants. They somehow even manage to make bass feel like LFEs.

They are amazing.

I'm getting really close to pulling the trigger on these.... I wanna shit my pants too!
Can you use a headset with these? Or are these strictly single player headphones?

I know I went and bought a new tv stand to get my set at a comfortable height. Then I spent an afternoon organizing all the wires for my dvd,ps3,wii,360,cable box, tivo so I have everything hidden / tied off and one massive set of wires run to the back of my tv. \

Today I just bought a new 360 for hdmi, cuz my bravia wouldn't do 1080p over component, and my old 360 freezes up after about two hours of play. And now I think I want a set of those headphones to round off the experience.

You can still plug a regular headset into your Bravia and the Pioneer headset base has an extra headphone socket too.

Oh I meant an xbox live headset, sorry I wasn't very clear with what I was asking.
Can you comfortably wear and hear a live headset under these, or are these headphones too overpowering for that?

why do you need 1080p for your xbox 360?

it looks better, even upscaled.

And the hdmi removes some jaggies.

When you're as big an audio/video junkie as I am, you notice the subtleties that most don't pick up on. When you pay premium for the tv, you want to use its full potential.

If the set can display in 1080p then why the heck not.

because the content isnt 1080p? maybe he has the intention to watch 1080p movies, but games? i dont know of many xbox 360 games supporting 1080p, maybe virtual fighter is the exception.

Will setting the 360 to output at 1080p make the aliasing in H3 worse, since it needs to upscale the image from 720p?

And, is H3 using 2X AA or did you guys bump it up to 4?

Um, things get upscaled to 1080p?

Stinkles, I'm sure you've answered this question somewhere before, but what HDTV do you use for gaming?

Samsung and Sharp HDTVs, both 720p, both 32 inch (narrow rooms).

Stinkles, do any of the Bungie crew still use the legendary DUKE controller for H1 and H2? I recall from the bonus H2 disc that the duke was still going strong at Bungie.

Most likely no.

Unless you wear them over the headphones, and have voice come through "speakers" in the menu. But even with voice volume cranked all the way, you'll barely be able to hear most people.

Yup thats the one of the big problems when you game with headphones.

I hate these 1080P vs 720P and HDMI vs Component arguments. The better choices are highly dependent on your own setup. Sometimes a TVs scaler is awesome, and sometimes component gives a "richer" image on a TV. People still argue about the benefits of vacuum tubes in the audio world.

You have to play around with your own setup to find what works best for you.

Yeah, no kidding.

It does make me wonder though. The volume in most games is cranked really high. Do they (meaning any developer) have any concept of Dolby Reference Level?

This entire discussion reminds me of how much I hate the entire HD space. Different display resolutions, technologies and specs. Different output resolutions, cables, scaling, formats - gah. And the prices of these units just boggles my mind. I spent $500 and it was a huge blow to to the budget - I had to spend my mid-year bonus on it. I did a couple months of research, on and off, just to be able to follow these conversations and make a semi-informed decision. (Though to be fair I'm kind of an idiot, so part of it is me.)

The cherry on top was being met with mockery and derision when I made the purchase by AV snobs. Were Halo 3 not coming out, I'd be content to tell the entire HD space to go die in a fire while I rode that SD set as long as it lasted. Stepping into HD was one of the least pleasant experiences I've ever had as a consumer.

Thats essentially what I did when I got my new Sharp 1080p 42" Aquos. Got the HDMI enabled 360 and wow, does it look sweet in 1080p w/HDMI. Even the games being upscaled look awesome. Bioshock/COD4/Gears/GRAW2 all look awesome, and not a single one is 1080p "native".

Was this on GAF or where you bought your display?

I've ranted about this far too often, but HD is pretty much worthless in my experience.

It was hear. He posted a pic about his tv and just some quick points of his experience and several people jumped in and bashed his tv cause it wasn't "True HD". It was pretty stupid. Some of the AV crowd on GAF can be dicks.
