This entire discussion reminds me of how much I hate the entire HD space. Different display resolutions, technologies and specs. Different output resolutions, cables, scaling, formats - gah. And the prices of these units just boggles my mind. I spent $500 and it was a huge blow to to the budget - I had to spend my mid-year bonus on it. I did a couple months of research, on and off, just to be able to follow these conversations and make a semi-informed decision. (Though to be fair I'm kind of an idiot, so part of it is me.)

The cherry on top was being met with mockery and derision when I made the purchase by AV snobs. Were Halo 3 not coming out, I'd be content to tell the entire HD space to go die in a fire while I rode that SD set as long as it lasted. Stepping into HD was one of the least pleasant experiences I've ever had as a consumer.

Yikes!
In all truthfulness, not many tech releases get past me without some general knowledge. I read up on all the good stuff, and I'm usually an early adopter. I usually know what set I'm likely to buy 6-7 months b4 its out. That puts me in even more extreme minority. Sucks you had such a painful experience with HD. Glad your enjoying your set though.

Yes, it was pretty stupid.

Really? That's fucked up.

Sorry to hear about that, Ghaleon.

And also, in life. Everything from the brand, size ("only 32?") and resolution ("why not 1080p?"). I kind of got defensive since I just plunked down $500 and was feeling pretty good about it - at first. :lol

The set seems pretty good to me. There was a noticable bump in the kinds of details I could see in Bioshock, from the text to water effects. (I upgraded halfway through that game.); also in some HD trailers I'd downloaded, like that Halo 3 vid I snapped the pic of, which made me happy. I still need to go back and check out some of the other games and see how big the difference is. My daughter wants to play Crackdown tomorrow so that will be my chance. I'm glad I got it, and the difference is noticable. But some have told me that it was some kind of night and day difference between SD and HD, which is not the case.

But then, I didn't buy a true HD system, anyways, so what do I know. :p

I got my HDTV for free... in exchange for my sister's life :(
I have no idea what this means but I'm very sad now.

:(

Would this be an inappropriate time to remind people of m0dus' latest thread contest? See OP for details.

:(

Can't say I blame you for being defensive. I'm sure most people would be. Well, anyone whose actually had a loan/mortgage or rent to deal with...

And coming from someone who has spent an insane amount on A/V stuff... I've been rockin' the "partial HD" for the last 3 years. It does alright. ;-) And in my humble opinion, unless you've got a 100" front projection system, it's not an issue.

Ding Ding.
You wanna see how beautiful HD can be, try it on an HD Projector at 100+ inches. Sure the room has to be dark, but wow, you'll poop yourself just a bit.

I farted after reading this. So we're almost there.

I've decided to buy a Samsung Plasma for Sept 25th. My dad thinks I am crazy for buying an HDTV for games. It's a good thing hes paying for it (graduation gift), and he thinks I'm even more crazy for going to stand in line at midnight to get the game. Do any of your parents think your crazy for being out of college and still playing videogames?

Why not LCD?

And no, my parents don't think I'm crazy for being out of college and into video games...they think I'm crazy for being so into Halo.

Thats a good question...

I think its because I am trying to stick with buying from Costco due to their rep and customer service, and unfortunately I haven't seen the Samsung LCDs at any of my local Costco stores. I have learned that these new Sammy Plasmas have very good Burn-in resistance features (pixel shifting, white wash programs, etc.)

No shit. I just recently upgraded from a shitty 30 some inch SD t.v. to a 91 hd projector, and I've never looked back.

Quick noob question about online co-op: will there be public lobbies or matchmaking where you can get in to games with some random guys, or can you only play with people on your friend list?

I have a 26 inch LCD Samsung set. I'm perfectly happy with mine.

On a side note, I can't fall asleep. Too much HYPE. I just came back from a 2 hour Wal-Mart trip. lol

There are matchmaking lobbies that pair you up with other players automatically.

Edit: Nevermind, I missed the co-op part of the question. Friends list only for online co-op.

My parents thought me being into video games was crazy from the NES onward.

Are you sure about the Matchmaking for Campaign? I didn't think there was a matchmaking Campaign option.

Oh, yeah I skipped over the whole 'coop' part of the question. It's late. Nevermind.

I already have two LCDs and my next TV will definitely be a plasma (I am hoping Pioneer pro 150FD but it’s damn expensive). Plasma has a much better black than LCD.

Have a Pio 4280 here and it's great.

It almost makes me sick to my stomach to think people will try to play Halo 3 on SD. Seriously, what is even the point? pathetic

Get back to turn-based RPG adventuring and level grinding!

I'm gonna play The Lurking Horror instead. I need to figure out what to do after giving the microwaved chinese food to some dude on a trs-80.

Oh shut up. I'm sorry some of us aren't as rich as you. Truly sorry.

Idiot.

Wow, way to turn around and really diminish the value of that apology. I'm starting to wonder if you were even sincere at all in the first place. ugh, gaf

And you were sincere right? Grow up a bit, not everything is about having the best piece of technology, some people can't afford that and if people want to enjoy Halo 3 on a SDTV, what's it got to do with you? "Makes me sick to my stomach" literally must be the most ridiculous thing I've heard in tandem to that. My word, you must be sad.

:lol

Astrolad, who is that in your avatar?

Stop. Edit time!

So, I thought I'd ask here to get laughed at hysterically by visual/audiophiles;

I have a 26" Samsung LE26R74BD TV, and I think I've pretty much ruined the (admittedly substandard) speakers by cranking Guitar Hero II up way too loud :3

So, what I'm after is a reasonably cheap 2.1 system. Firstly because I am curently temping and the money fucking sucks balls (barely covering rent and food here :( ) and secondly because the room setup isn't condusive to 5.1.

Any reccomendations? Also please be aware I am in the UK so no Best Buys or Circuit City's please :3

Finally caught up, missed the whole MLG debate but at least I got here in time for the HD debate. You guys type so quickly!

Anyway, I couldn't afford any sort of HDTV myself, so I bought a nice new PC monitor and VGA cable setup. It wasn't anywhere near as expensive as a HDTV, still gives a noticable improvement over SD and has versitility as it can be used with my PC too. Overall, I'm happy with my step into HD gaming.

Totally. Not sure how SD viewers continue to go on living. The whole thing's just so emo.

I'm stuck with a computer moniter also but it's nice. iIt's 19 inches, widescreen, and displays 720p and 1080p. It's all I can afford at the moment. I wish MS and Sony would support 16:10 aspect ratio resolutions. :/

Can't help but wonder why you are so offended by his post. I mean, really now.

I'd suggest taking your own advice and grow up a bit.

On the note of TVs, I got a CRT HD 27". I'm not really interested in LCDs for gaming, so I went for a CRT. Love it, though I really don't want any speakers, so I've been thinking about dropping 50 bucks orso on some nice headphones. How will I use the mic, though?

Thanks for your concern, but I don't think anyone was talking to you.

Nice logic though, I need to grow up because I'm offended.

Anyway, let's not derail this thread any longer, I'm sorry for bringing it up, I was just saying people can enjoy Halo 3 regardless of what tv they have, portable, SDTV or HDTV.

I'll drop it now, back on topic.
