Bleh I hate Lone Wolves. I got to 43 when Halo 3 first came out, but now I can't stand it. So much bad spawning and kill stealing, just makes me rage.
Same.

Although its always funny when someone spawns right in front of you at the very start of the game.

Yeah that seems to happen to me about 1 in every 4 games. I spawn right behind a dude and just assassinate him before he even moves. It's never happened to me though o.o

Oh does anyone know why there is no Pistol secondary in AR start Lone Wolves variants? It would make Lone Wolves much more playable, for me at least.

Pistol secondary is only for the "Team Slayer" game variant.

Would you eat a Klondike bar?

First time hearing about these so I'm sorry to say that I've never had the pleasure. It's vanilla ice-cream and chocolate, what's the deal? Is Klondike prison lingo or something?

Also, my liver and I had a little chat this week and we both thinks its best that he takes the weekend off so hopefully I'll be able to check out some customs this weekend, provided I'm full of stimulants I should be around. Greenwich mean time for the win, right? :/

Equating Longshore with Hang 'em High just gave me a giant Haloboner. If it comes with decent forgeable items, it'll be one of my favorite maps ever.

Ah. I was wondering why Urk was so down today.

Serious question Shishka,

Social Doubles was/is literally my favorite play list ever... However, it was ripped away from me all to soon (due to XP boosting I assume?).

Is there any hope of seeing Social Doubles return, ever?

See you tomorrow BB <3 ;)

Yeah, it's over an hour from where I live, which is weird because I'm right next to San Jose.

But the Union City one seems to be only ~30 minutes from my place so I'm going to try and go to that one.

I'm from Sacramento area, but I'll probably be stopping by in Antioch to give it a check out. I'll probably see you there. What day does it stop there again?

Social Doubles was cut before I started, but as you say it was because it was booster heaven.

Despite the presence of the automated banhammer, it is doubtful that the situation would change. People tend to like to cite party limits as "the fix" for social boosting, while not really noting the fact that the most boosted playlist in Matchmaking since Social Doubles was cut is, well, Ranked Doubles. If Ranked restrictions won't stop people from boosting a ranked playlist, it certainly won't stop them from boosting social.

To put it more succinctly, Social Doubles was the most boosted because it required the least number of accomplices. If we brought Social Doubles back and added restrictions, it'd be the most boosted as it'd require the least number of accomplices. As such, we're not really considering its return at this time.

Wow, that is actually really cool... I am pumped for tomorrow! I just don't know what to expect as far as lines go... Do I show up an hour early or two, three, four...

I would hate to be stuck at the back of some massive line waiting to play Firefight... :\

Quite confused here, how are people who can only go in twos and play against two others boosting EXP? They actually have to win to get the experience?

Ranked doubles is a playlist with a very high number of boosters regarding RANK... because people are boosting new doubles 50's (least # of games with lowest hassle). You can't really EXP boost in dbls tho in the traditional sense of let everyone tie or get 2nd and 3rd and everyone gets XP not playing the game as its meant to be played style of boosting.

If you put a party limit of two in Social Doubles they would be getting matched with two others who both want the exp and you have a game on your hands?

As long as you are playing a real team and not playing against two of your controllers that you plugged in but arent using thats not exp boosting then... its just winning lots of games (or losing)

but I've seen on B.net that its a "redundant" playlist that was your reason for not bothering bringing it back...

I'd say an hour early is a safe bet. I mean, how many people can there be?

I am going to show up an hour early, and if there is a line I will re-quote your post and call you out.

My weekend fun hinges on your judgment.

Good luck.

How long was the line in front of Bungie's doorknob? Surely ODST couldn't draw a bigger crowd than Bungie's front door. Just take that time, cut it in half, and leave that early.

I have to say that, despite me being a below-average player, watching the gameplay footage of the 3 new maps on G4TV is utterly painful to watch. But it does give a nice glimpse of the maps, which is really the real reason to be showcasing these. Bottom line is, I'm jealous. :D

Longshore is gonna rock. After the revelation yesterday, I could immediately see the HeH influence at the Defender's base.

After watching those vids, my faith in Bungie has gone up a lil bit.

Two things to note tho:

Midship:
P1 is DRASTICALLY different. Seriously, P1 use to be one of those places where you could just totally EMBARRASS and dong on someone soo bad that when you juked them out they would literally quit out of the game. Why was it changed sooo much?

Oh yeah just a few more things:

- you better be able to get to P3 ALL 3 WAYS
- you better be able to WALK ON THE EGG SHELLS (hopefully you grenade through the walls, if not no biggie)
- you better be able to shift lift direction
- you better be able to jump from P2 ramp to P2 sticky ledge
- you better be able to jump from Car1 to Car2
- i would like to jump on the base wings from the top-mid but since top-mid isn't a dynamic object anymore i guess that sucks :/
*edit*
- you better be able to nade the p2 shell cover if not WTFUX

Citadel:
IT'S HUGE! (inb4 that'ts what she said) I don't understand why the some of the ramp corridors are so freaking big. Also, I expect to see some epic stickies throws to greande rockets to yourself.

sparklabs = terrible

talking in equations = retarded

dude ran around midship for 3 minutes with shotgun out, i saw shitty shit that made me upset and i x'd it.

Fantastic clips.

Heretic: Love all the AR action.

Citadel: It was hard to really get a good grasp of the map from the other clips we've seen because they were so short, but that's not the case here. The outer ring is the upper area and the inner ring is the lower area. The map looks good for those encounters where you continuously exchange BR fire until one of you either dies or moves on. The Needler seems to be very useful on this map - nice.

Longshore: Neither team in that video knew that they could extend a bridge.:lol Can definitely see the Hang "'Em High connection with regards to the defenders base. Still my most anticipated map.

Ok, so I just got back from my holiday. Is there anything big I've missed this week?

Halo 3/ODST/Reach-wise? I can't be bothered to go back over all the pages.

Nothing too big, but here are some pretty cool Bnet articles you may have missed out on.

Citadel In-Depth
Early Intel: Rally Point (Gameplay Videos: 1, 2, and 3.)
Longshore In-Depth
Halo 3: ODST Transport Vehicle

Also, a new ViDoc was shown at Gamescom and should be out for the public soon (tonight maybe?). The new OXM has a big ODST cover story, but beware, it contains spoilers.

I really see no reasons to have a social double team playlists. Team Doubles is generally a competitve gametype, why would you want a social varient of it? Just go play Ranked, it'll be better because you won't be donging guests/getting split up. I would be happy if all the social playlists went away and there were only a couple of ranked ones. I despise Social and really wish that Ranked BTB would have worked.

I would much rather see concentrate on their objective playlists. Team Objective and Social Objective (if that even still exists) need to be worked on so that an all Objective playlist will work. They've done nothing to try and raise the player population in these playlists. I would much rather have a ranked Team Flag playlist. Would be the shit.

First off, Inglourious Basterds...Amazing movie! Another classic Tarantino film.

Secondly, updates were made a while back to 4 MLG maps...Guardian, Narrows, Pit and Construct. I was wondering when the 6.1 versions of these maps would be updated to matchmaking? From what I understand, they're just player spawn changes. I believe on Guardian the Mauler respawn times now matches the Sniper. I could be wrong though.

Let me know how the experience was and what time it started because I'm going next Tuesday to the one next to the Bay, but I have no clue what time it starts.

Bungie Weekly Update 8/21/09

Easy stuff first:

Bustin’ Recaps

If this is the first time you’ve dropped into Bungie.net this week to check out what’s going on, take a second to get yourself up to speed. We dropped a pair of Rally Point screenshots from ODST’s Firefight and a trio of In-Depth articles into the mix. The latter dig into the second half of the Mythic Map Pack for Halo 3 and actually aren’t quite a trio just yet. Heretic is still on approach. Less speed, more luxury.

Hear No, See No

We’re just barely over a month away from Halo 3: ODST’s street date. If you’re struggling to keep every last bit of information under wraps so you can experience everything from a fresh perspective when you finally get to play, tread lightly. Press previews are starting to roll out and some folks just don’t get why you wouldn’t want all the tasty tidbits forced upon you the moment you load up the forums.

Since we have no way to police every darkened Internet alley you squat in, it’s up to you to pick and choose where you get your information and how much risk you’re willing to take.

Transforming Transport Truck Tour

Beefy 13-ton truck looking for Firefight-loving fan to spend some quality time with. Promises thrills and a sneak peak at Halo 3: ODST. Adults only.

You hear about this? Twenty-two cities, eight Xbox 360’s, and a whole truckload of Halo swag courtesy of Microsoft and GameStop. They say this bad boy clocks in at a “beefy” thirteen tons, which is like ten times larger than thirteen standard tons and over a hundred times more meaty.

Our Visual Design team coated this sucker, inside and out, with some eye-candy you’ll need to see to believe. In fact, check out some shots of what you’ll see if you happen to catch up with it when it comes to your area (or you go on a great journey of your own):

Room With a View

If you want to track down the truck and play some Firefight, here’s the list of stops along with some more details:

Can’t wait for “Halo 3: ODST” to drop on September 22? Then suit up and get set for the “Halo 3: ODST” GameStop Tour! Microsoft and Bungie have created a massive, transforming “Halo 3: ODST” Transport Vehicle to take the game directly to players at GameStop locations across the United States, providing a hands-on sneak peak at one of this year’s most anticipated games.

The action begins this Saturday, Aug. 22, in Redmond, Washington when Xbox LIVE’s Major Nelson and Bungie kick off the nationwide “Halo 3: ODST” GameStop Tour outside the Redmond Town Center GameStop (17128 Redmond Way, Redmond, WA). The “Halo 3: ODST” Transport Vehicle deploys at noon and will remain active until 8:00 p.m.

Fans in each city of the tour will have the opportunity to experience the all new Firefight multiplayer mode in “Halo 3: ODST” and score “Halo” swag for proving their skills (all participants must be age 17 or older).

Built from a modified M820A2 expandable truck, the “Halo 3: ODST” Transport Vehicle provides a fully customized mobile gaming experience. Measuring 27 feet long and 14 feet wide when fully expanded, and weighing a beefy 13 tons, the “Halo 3: ODST” Transport Vehicle is a “Halo” party on wheels, outfitted with eight Xbox 360 console rigs featuring “Halo 3: ODST.”

In Cologne

Little word reaches our stateside bunker from Brian’s Gamescom excursion. Only a few scatter shot relays here and there to let us know that he’s still alive. No doubt he’s been ultra busy (overdosing on Sauerbraten and Reissdorf) showing off the Firefight goods and giving exclusive, first look screenings of our latest ViDoc, which has been properly localized for a German audience. Alien Schweine!

Last I heard Brian was still in the throes of the abrupt time zone shift, but still kicking all kinds of...hold on, incoming transmission from Cologne. Looks like Brian’s gonna personally deliver the word from Gamescom after all:

“Willkommen Bei Feuergefecht

Team Bungie is on the ground in Cologne, Germany to promote ODST at the gigantic Gamescom show. This huge gathering puts E3 to shame in terms of crowds and scale, a fact clearly evident with our whopping 32 stations of hands-on Firefight ("Feuergefecht") compared to the mere 8 we had in Los Angeles. We have five different maps available for play including the world premier of the latest map, Rally Point. So far the game has proven to be a hit with consistent crowds and lines for the duration of the show.

Upstairs we've been doing round-the-clock campaign demos for over 200 worldwide media. We're showing the same demo we did at E3 which includes the opening cut-scene, a bit of exploration through New Mombasa and start of the Oni Alpha Site campaign mission. As a grand finale, we're giving a sneak peak at the next ODST ViDoc which is slated for worldwide release on Xbox LIVE marketplace next week. So far it's been a big hit including the special German language addition that was made just in time for the show.

It's been a long day here in Cologne with two more full days of the show to go. So if you'll excuse me, it's time to log off and go hunt down a few biers before we drop back in tomorrow. Auf Wiedersehen!”

Getting Briefed

As Brian notes, the new ViDoc we keep unmercifully teasing you with should be ready for public consumption next week. Time to refresh the site like there’s no tomorrow. (Or just use the RSS feed. Whichever works.)

In Seattle

Stateside we’ve been kept busy by some visitors. We booked a small, in-studio room for our guests to set up shop in for a couple of days, fired up the release build of Halo 3: ODST, and sealed them inside so they could spend some alone time with Campaign and Firefight.

My original plan was to do a brief interview with some of these folks after they wrapped up their play sessions. I thought it would be pretty interesting to talk about the process from their perspective. What it’s like coming into the studio, playing through the title before anyone else gets to, getting locked into a room with no food, water, or human contact for 48-hours straight. That sort of thing.

Alas, two work days reserved to complete the Halo 3: ODST Campaign and dig into the Firefight missions didn’t afford our captives much down time. Once we realized it was going to be a bit of a stretch, we even agreed to extended their time both days in an effort to accommodate. In the end, they still ran out of time. When the cab pulled out of the lot at the end of day two, my dreams of a insider’s look into game journalism vanished in a cough of charcoal exhaust.

Maybe next time.

Loose Ends from Overhead

The two Mythic Map Pack articles we linked to above were missing a pretty key element: overhead shots. We didn’t have them prepped when the rest of the content ready to go, so we decided to run them and pop back in later with some updated assets. These top down takes include weapon, equipment, and vehicle layout on each map. And while Heretic’s write-up has yet to materialize, we do have the overhead ready for inspection. Indulge:

When Comfort, Function, and Elastic Waistbands Collide, David Allen’s Tale

Producers David Allen and Matt Richenburg were browsing Amazon.com last week when they came across the ever present phrase: “Customers Who Bought This Item Also Bought…” The recommended item on display: Zubaz.

This, of course, is where the story should end. David Allen, in all his naivete, forged on ahead.

A Reenactment

“I would procure this absurd article of clothing – this pantlike mockery – if only, come week’s end, you would dare dress yourself as a fool for the full duration of the work day!” Matt said, devilishly twisting an invisible, yet richly waxed mustache.

“Do not doubt that I would agree to your terms, sir, but I must confess I would only do so assured by my belief that you would not be capable of acquiring this ridiculous garb in sufficient time. To satisfy the terms of such an arrangement, I would demand delivery on the morrow!!!” David replied fool-heartedly, extending an overeager hand in confidence; pumping Matt’s own appendage in a hearty and businesslike fashion that belied the Devil’s bargain which had now been struck.

And the physical act itself – two hands clasped and shaken – loosed some shred of sense and understanding within David Allen. Upon completing the gentleman’s arrangement, he instantly recoiled.

“I must not and will not don the Zubaz!” David declared.

But there were many a witness. The promise was made. The bargain, binding.

Matt hearkened directly to the distributor of the Zubaz.

“Good sir, I require that a delivery of your clown’s accouterments be sent by parcel immediately,” Matt excitedly demanded, “The price bears no consequence!”

Only now, with hindsight and horror, must we all bear witness to how incomprehensibly wrong he was. There is always a consequence, my dear friends. A price that must be paid.

And yup, someone took pics.

Awesome update, but no ViDoc? =( I hope by next week, it means Monday.

I was excited for it and now we'll probably have to wait until next week. On the other hand I found out another reason why the leaked achievements seem even more real.

No ViDoc is sad, but next week won't be too long to wait. I can hold out
I think
.

And I agree with Dax, weapon and equipment on the last 3 maps looks good. Heretic seems fine to me, only one bubble. I think Longshore's big thing is going to be the Grav Lift, it'll change those 1-sided games. My huge problem with Citadel is that there are only 3 BRs per side. Team Slayer on that map might be rough.
I also thought the two sections at the end were funny.

Mids-.. er, Heretic is small enough there really isn't a necessity for a piece of equipment. That's the thing with certain maps, and how everybody assumes they all need something. For a small map like this, it's not needed. Cold Storage was the same way, and it has THREE pieces.

Check his level in Team Slayer. If it's a 50, it's legit.
Obviously it's an account Bungie uses just for messaging Recon winners to let them know about the awesome new Titanium Shock(TM) armor. He's got zero GS.
