Anyone have any experience with Amazon's launch day shipping? I wanna pre-order ODST (not at Gamestop) but wanna make sure I get it day 1.

Dunno about games, but I got the BSG Bluray complete series on pre-order and it said it shipped today and arrives tomorrow [tomorrow is the retail date as well]. So I assume it ships the day before.

Love it. Everything I've ordered with release date delivery has come on the day as promised. Usually get a delivery email the day before. And you they may even send out the email with the Johnson code right after it's shipped.
 
Once I finish LOST S4, I'm getting The Wire: S1 from Netflix, so don't worry about that.

And I don't think I'll be able to get Sgt. Johnson for ODST. I'm going to be moving to LA this Fall and since I don't have a concrete address (aka don't know where I'm going to live there yet), I won't be able to pre-order it from anywhere. :(
 
At 3:10 the player has 3 plasma grenades. Maybe they went back to 4 nades per slot

? Also, I think I could about kick a grenade further than the ODSTs can throw em.

Edit: Why are all of you paying so much on shipping just to get a game on launch day? I hate Gamestop, but damn, I ain't gonna pay 15 more dollars just to get it from Amazon same day.

I can help you, though, my disc is scratched and it doesn't let me play The Ark, and after finishing Halo(to get to the cutscenes), it boots me out and tells me the disc is unreadable. I've been planning on getting a CD cleaner/doctor, or buying a new Disc.
Just get the cd doctor. I had a massive scratch on mine caused by my first (of three) RROD, and The Ark was the only level that wouldn't load up. CD Doctor cleared it right up. :D

Even though Dax likes it and almost everything he likes is vile; The Wire is actually really good. Watch Dexter (seasons 1&2) while you're at it as well.

Yeah, we saw the grenade count go up in the E3 demo. I suppose it works for campaign and firefight but I'm glad they went with a 2 nade limit in Halo 3 MP.

I love going back in this thread to around the day when Halo 3 first launched. Reading people's first impressions makes me :lol. It's a rewarding experience.

Good. But yeah, it sucks to have shows spoiled through .gifs. Luckily there aren't any good The Wire .gifs floating around.:lol

You know, Sgt. Johnson really isn't that big of a deal for me. Yeah, sure, it'd be nice to play as him but it's not anything I can't part with. If you can't get a hold of one, I'd be willing to give you mine. Seriously.

The maximum an ODST can hold is three grenades. I think I learned that from one of the ODST videos from E3 (they started off with three grenades).
 
Graphics seem pretty bad in that video, hopefully as a result of offscreen.

Also don't like the whole screen going red as you get damaged thing, Halo was like the one shooter that didn't do this.

Other than that, it looks really fun. Also seems pretty difficult, people in the video seemed to be struggling on a lower difficulty.

I really don't know how I'm going to find the health system in ODST. I really do prefer the regenerating health deal in games these days so hopefully it's not too grating taking a step back

I just finished Dexter season 2, that show is peculiarly addictive. It's so strange, but soooo good.

And I've just got my preorder in at my local Gamestop. Sorry for not going with the cause, but I can just drive by on 9/22 and pick it up.


On the topic of control schemes, I use Bumper Jumper.
 
I try to get down with the Bumper Jumper occasionally but I always get too frustrated and switch back to Default. I'm just too used to it to switch D:
 
There's a random movie on TV, it looks like Brimley is one of the cast. He's about to eat a lot of bacon and now he's ogling an old car of some sort (I'm guessing a 1960s car).

Oh wow, I didn't know about that. Is the 10$ rebateon all preorders, or just the first one? If it does actually arrive on release date, then it's a great deal.

I saw the first episode of Lost and was not impressed by the rotary airplane sawing a person in half thing. Cliche.

It is on select few future games. The same deal is being offered at Best Buy as well.

This makes sense. It's been a while since I played more than one game on it (I missed several weeks of game nights) so I'd forgotten how the caps worked once it was out of the base.

My original idea for this map was to have this big open natural feeling canyon occupying most of the area. Then there'd be a massive base made to feel even more impressive by the stretch of barren land surrounding it. I think it's a good concept, but it actually just led to a lot of camping most of the map being unused. I hate it when the best tactic is to camp the objective so I then placed a bunch of grav lifts and entrances so that camping players would be killed more easily. I then ran into the problem of the defenders getting killed in their base but not being able to move out from it safely. So I built some structures over by the camo side to give defenders a route onto the canyon. I realize now that I'm typing this that I've sorta gotten away from your original statement so let me retry, I'm hoping as a fellow forger you can appreciate this map design ramble.
Oh yes. I have this pent up desire to talk about every permutation I've ever done - for every block I've placed on a map, I tried three others in that spot - so by all means. :)

Point is, I want there to be a section of that map where vehicles may be preferred and another where infantry has the upper hand. That way, as the flag carrier you can judge which route will most likely lead to success depending on where your teammates are and what they have. I do like the idea of moving the camo to the other side because, as it stands, there really is no reason for infantry to move down that side of the map. I think I'll hold off on adding and cover on the canyon because I think it already has a sizable advantage when it just comes down to holding that position.
Yup, all true.

As I stated already, I'll be moving the active camo to the other side. But do you have any suggestions as to where I should put it. The problem is it needs to be close enough so that a player can grab it and get to the flag before it runs out, but not too accessible to defense. I suppose I could let defense have the first swing at it (on Last Resort defense can get camo first).
My suggestion is to put it on top of the large flat area above the ramp, pushed over to the defense side. That way it's in a visible location, so an alert defense can see it get picked up if not neccesarrily stop it. It was a tactic I used on Entrenched, which was partly build around the idea of an active camo on each side; by placing it where the other team could see the camo on the other team spawn and get picked up, they know to watch for someone using it to approach. And on Bruhaha, it would be a natural balancer on the more open side.

But that's me. You know what you're doing.

As for the grav lift, in our games there was always one there and they were used pretty frequently. I suppose after more games though the defense could learn to grab it and hold it just so offense doesn't get it. I reduced the timer down a bit too so that could make it harder for them too. Maybe I'll put it where camo was originally. That way defense can still get it but won't be able to bring it back to their base unless no one tries to kill him. That and I wanna use my green room for something :P
The camo spot would be a good one, I think. I used the grav lift several times to get into the base, but I don't know if everyone else knew it was there. And by placing it back under cover, attackers can grab it and move to different sides of the base to use it. Where it is now, you basically have to grab it and use it right away because it's so exposed.

So my questions are:
What do you feel was wrong with the spawns? You weren't the only one, I think Plywood or someone said something about the spawns as well.
Two thoughts on spawns. First, think of each plausible spawn location as having a specific purpose. Ask yourself, when the attackers are in the base and have cleared it out, where should the defenders respawn? Somewhere near the base, but not in a place where they can just start firing and take the enemy down. Right now I can't tell where that is, as the spawns are sprinkled around, never more than two side by side. A few clusters of spawns - a half dozen locations or so - might bring more order to the spawning (see next point).

One thing I noticed when playing is it can take me a few moments to orient myself after spawning on the defense if I'm outside the base. I think the reason is that there's so many different locations, and they face many different directions. Mind you, I get lost in department stores and parking lots, so the fact that I get disoriented when respawning might say more about me than the map. :p

Would placing a huge flag home box around both the base and the side areas, then placing two flag away boxes around each side spawn allow defenders to spawn outside the base as well as inside when the flag is home? And would limiting defense to spawn outside the base be beneficial?
I think the map is big enough that there can be spawns inside. In theory if there are enough of them, defenders won't be spawning inside the base when the flag is under attack. My suggestion is to move the spawns a bit closer to the flag. That way, when defenders near the flag are killed, there's no chance of the spawns inside the base getting reused - the system should push them outside the base.

I have no idea if this helps. I'm mostly agreeing with you because, as I expected, you thought the map design through better than I could have. But I think the small tweaks you mentioned and some small spawn tweaks will make a big difference.

I think your map is right about where Entrenched was before you nerfed it - it worked, but just needed a little tweaking to go up a notch.
 
Know what? I kinda wish Blood Gulch had been ported for a third time. Valhalla is awesome and all, but it would have been really nice having Blood Gulch to play alongside it.

Now, I still want to do the walkways off the side with the teleporters, but I can't decide if I want to leave the walkway the same length or double it.

Not trying to promote my map here, but I created a "remake" of Blood Gulch using Valhalla(prefer Blood Gulch's openness with vehicles, but Valhalla is still better than it on foot battles), and it played pretty well when I played it with friends. Though, the bases had to be changed(Lake base is now blue base, and Waterfall base is now Red base), and the hill still makes the map revolve around it. Maybe I will link to it when I get around to finishing it(same with my other maps).
 
I'd go for wider rather than longer, Butane. The map looks like it's long enough, but a little too narrow for when there's a lot of action.

Edit: put the finishing touches on my tweaks of Slingshot. I have enough budget to toss some lights on each end, but other than that I think it's all done. Man cannons removed, weapons tweaked, some geometry added and some yanked. I think it's just okay, but I'm definately done with it.

Interest piqued. Did you fill in some gaps to try to make more "solid hills"?

Crap, I didn't notice that I put length. I meant to put width.

Anyway, I'm probably just going to widen out that path another block size.

Best part about it, I still have about 500 in budget, so I can easily make it.
