I don't.... what?

In one case he brutally fights his way out through the flood, and in the order he is caught completely off guard by someone he thought was a non-threatening "ally".
He was burned at almost point-blank range with no practical chance of dodging it.

Also, you don't really need to spoiler tag it, it's been 2 years, the people in this thread have played it.

How does his survival on Halo make any more sense? In the Legendary ending, he's even shown as dying, and yet in canon he doesn't.

I'm not saying he should have lived through Guilty Spark's blast, I just wouldn't have put him in that position in the first place. If you're going to have Johnson die, make it believable for the character (if he's survived Halo, which is unthinkable considering that Johnson would have to escape from the Flood and then somehow find a working ship off the planet in almost no time, it just doesn't seem likely that he would die from a blast from Spark - all I'm suggesting is to make his death mysterious because you already made his survival mysterious).

Also, you don't really need to spoiler tag it, it's been 2 years, the people in this thread have played it.

I know, I was just being cautious of people who may have perhaps not played it yet. That's really unlikely though.

And this is why I don't take Halo's story seriously anymore. Some stuff was okay, some bad and the rest a little ridiculous. Although it's not as bad as comic book reboots. :P

That's probably the best route to take in regards to Halo's story. I was just really hoping Halo: Combat Evolved would have two sequels which lived up to its standard of storytelling, plus I got invested in the story from reading the books. Oh, well! ;D

It's to be expected when so many cooks have been in the kitchen. Up until sometime after Halo 2's release I always wondered if the books were even cannon considering how difficult it would be to maintain consistency across the board.

Halo 1's story had the advantage of simplicity, it didn't reach far into the canon.

And by that, I mean it didn't explore a ton of story elements and fail at it. It stuck with simple and executed.

Don't see a difference. If there is, it's to subtle for me to notice.
Read post again. Shooting animation is different (hammer moves back and forth) and the texture looks a lot better imo. It looks a bit worn, rather than the cleaner look in Halo 3. You of all people should've spotted this. I'm no AR enthusiast and I spotted it right away. I'm not complaining or anything, I really don't care that much. I'm just saying they should add it back in for ODST, it was more realistic and looked a bit better, imo. ;)

Don't have much time, but great update this week :)

Haha, Update tonight was good.

I don't know about you guys, but I sorta stopped trying to understand the Halo story in a logical sense after Halo 2 and 3. Halo CE had a great and simple story. 2 and 3 tried to cram too much story into too small a game(s). If you are looking for hardcore canon, that's what the books are for. They seem to make more sense and are great reads.

OT: I'm goin out of town for a week so this is my last post for awhile. I think I'll be missing 2 Saturday GAF nights. :(

nah, man, it wasn't just me. It was everyone on my team. We would all definitely swing at the same time, but we'd die. eh whatever, it was just stab-out. That said though, people like to camp on the ceiling ledges by the invis hallway in The Pit.

The legendary ending is a fun easteregg. He hugs a goddamn elite!

His survival was a mix of luck, skill and determination. His escape is documented in the Graphic Novel and First Strike.
Maybe I'm missing something, but I for one was "happy" with Johnson's death. It was effective.

Agree.

Further, while some of the comic relief is ok (the Bill Paxton-like character quips), the Grunts are too Star Wars Ewok/Battledroid cute.

I felt Mass Effect's approach to sci-fi to be much more mature and very refreshing.
The main theme song is very cool too.

I take quite a philistine like approach to the Halo canon.

I'm more about 4shotting BK's.
(And them not dieing)

Be careful posting that. Someone from PAF might come in here and start counting the bullets that hit.

Remember the Penny Arcade kerfuffle? When Backflip was "called out" by some dork that went frame by frame count bullets to try to make Backflip look stupid (and it failed badly, ended up some the Penny Arcade guys joking about raiding GAF an, after complaints, the main Halo 3 topic on the Penny Arcade forums (PAF) was closed and locked)

* Grenades - Each grenade launches a specific application. I currently have them set to, from left to right, Pidgin, Steam, Foobar, and Firefox.
* Power Drainer - Opens a Shutdown menu. You can choose Shutdown, Restart, and Sleep
* Health Bar - Displays current track progress, with artist and title above it.
* Battle Rifle and Ammo Count - Displays current unread message count from Gmail and the Battlerifle opens Gmail.
* Ammo Clip - Top clip is download traffic; bottom clip is upload traffic.
* Radar - As of now, all this does is download and save an image for the local radar from Weather Underground. I'm currently editing a GIMP script which will automatically crop and edit the picture to display properly upon download. What you see here is the intended look. It also displays the current temperature.
* Time and Game Type - Display current time and date.
* Blue Score and Red Score - Display current CPU and RAM usage.
* Player Callsigns - These behave just like my TweetScanner skin.
* Battlerifle Ammo Count - Displays current battery status; it displays 0 in this picture because I'm using my desktop which is not on a battery.
* Also, the visor outline is done in Rainmeter as well.

Wonder if someone will ask for an AR mod? =)

If you set a standard for a character, keep with that character's standard. I would have agreed in that I would have had no problem Johnson dying on Halo, but the fact is he didn't and instead died by something much less likely to kill him. It turned the plot into something that was, quite frankly, laughable at best.

As far as Miranda, I didn't really care for her character at all. She was no Captain Keyes, and I think it'd be hard to even find a replacement character for him. Sometimes characters don't need replacements, they just need new and unique faces.

No, my problem goes farther than Johnson (although I find Johnson's death laughable) - I personally don't think the aliens should have had any connection to the humans. I think it would have worked much better if the Arbiter had to work with the Chief and both of them couldn't understand the other (we, being the Chief, would not be able to understand the Arbiter either and so we would have to make a decision on whether or not he is to be trusted and this would be based solely on his actions). Gravemind was a cool concept that was executed poorly.

The Halo series just never stayed up to the quality of storytelling that the original had. However, I plan to go back through the whole series and see if I can get a fresh take on the story. I've been trying really hard to like the story of the whole trilogy but I just can't do it - the books were so good that I got really invested in the Haloverse but the games didn't live up to what I was expecting (storytelling in the vain of the original Halo).
Agree on all of this.
Johnson's death sucked and didn't feel at all in keeping with the standard they set for the character. I didn't really care for Miranda but her death was pretty lame too. Compare it to what happened to Cap. Keyes in CE and it's just laughable how they killed off those characters.

This really is the "juices discovers lag" show.

Though, looks more like you had a hard time landing a headshot on the Elite.

\The 4th and 5th shot not being headshots? REALLY? THEY ARE RIGHT ON HIS HEAD.

Have you thought about maybe lowering your sensitivity so you can keep the reticle steady on the body of your opponent before you go up top? What about using the AR to whittle the shields first and then switching to the BR to snag the kill?

AR isn't pro enough.

I often do that, but it would be nice if the game actually worked right.

Wait, so I gotta have credentials to offer up advice now!?

I thought I needed credentials to offer advice? Noone at Bungie listens to me.

For the next Halo game the betrayel system should work on a threshold of reasonable team damage. What I mean is when a person on your team surpasses a certain amount of team damage the team should be able to choose to kick him. This is so he can't run around shooting your team making them one shots for the enemy.

Seriously I give this shit away for free! Its crazy!

Same douchey guy is now going to intentionally place himself into the line of friendly fire and kick legitimate players as they accidentally surpass your threshold.

:(

Thats a lot harder and slower than him shooting your teammates to 1 shot. It would be a team vote too. Initiated by person who's threshold was crossed. In fact to break that you should have a system where the team can turn the boot around.

He walks in front of fire initiates a boot team realizes hes a dick boots him instead. That would be pretty stellar. Might get in the way of gameplay for a second but whatever

It might help to have the sensitivity higher. Since I've lowered my sensitivity, I find that when in a BR fight, people jumping after the 3rd shot actually is effective against me since I have some difficulty looking up and landing the 4th headshot. People jumping against me did nothing when I was playing on 10.

Also, the AR thing is not a bad idea. If juices was able to put 6 shots on the guy with a BR, that would be more than enough time to take someone down with an AR.

Lastly, Elites for the loss.

Anyways, customs tonight, dudes? If you've found any interesting maps, throw a link up to them and I'll add them to the highlights. Don't worry if you're not sure how good it is, if it's bad I'll just take it off like I've done with so many maps I thought looked cool.

I'll be interested in playing if you guys are on, but I get out after 9 est.

Hopefully it's 4v4 so there's more maps suitable to try. Once there's more players, it tends to get limited in what maps are logical and large enough to use, and be enjoyable.

Pretty sure the standard starting time is around 9est/6pst

It's normally pretty small at the beginning, grows to near 16, then dwindles back down after a few hours.

Well I know some of us still haven't sent specific maps to Atlas so limited-player games might be a good idea for a few games.
