A person on FH created another Gemini map. Looks better than the past map I had seen posted. Still, a walk-through would be much better. Gah -- need my 360 back. :[
I think we played on it a few weeks ago. Played decent, can't attest to how it compares to the original.

But yeah, I've been looking over the maps at forgehub and there's a lot of awesome looking stuff that I'm really interested in trying out. Whenever I can snag a Xbox that is.

He had a weird hang up on water too.

Seriously though, there was no small amount of attention paid to those updates by myself. Those udpates along with the E3 2003 trailer were the main reason I paid attention to B.net during H2 and H3 development. And then there were the vidocs, which were like weekly updates on crack cocaine.

Yes those development days had me hanging on just about every word weekly. I vaguely remember reading about monkeys and the likes in one of the BWU and how that sounded cool. Might have been for Ivory tower, i don't remember but hopefully we get glimpses/hints at Bungies next project soon. Since we won't get anything at E3 this year, whats the next big conference after ODST is released in winter?

The ODST hype just isn't there right now... But come E3 and fall, I expect full on barrage at how cool a trash can looks in ODST!!!

I miss Mister Chief from the BWU :(

Frank had a way of talking about the project without actually divulging details as a way to give us fodder to chew over during dry spells when they couldn't actually talk about anything meaningful. Water, trees, lighting, descriptions of encounters ("something, um, bigger than a Grunt"), AI, etc. No real news, but bits and pieces of tasty morsels carefully sprinkled in the playful writing to keep us engaged. I do enjoy Urk's updates, but there hasn't been any of that this time around. Crickets on the ODST front. Everyone has their own style, but it is a different approach than we've seen before.

But E3 is just around the corner. Almost no point in hints at hints now. The real deal is going to arrive to melt our faces. Or something like that.

Those were the days.

Although that one day where Frank had to go overseas and thus couldn't create a WU and KP created one saying "you know we don't have to make updates for you or anyone, we do it because we want to, not because we have to, so don't expect us to always do it for you guys" or something like that. I was lawling all over the place over that. :lol

Haven't really followed this thread or B.net much lately. Has there been any information released on ODST and if the Halo 3 engine is being improved for it? Also, should we be expecting any thing Bungie related this E3? Thanks.

So, the reason why Urk isn't talking about ODST in any way or even making hints is because of a different writing style?

I dunno, I think it's just simply a blanket ban of much ODST talk outside of specific chances, such as the Gamepro piece. Probably has a lot to do with E3 and the games development and marketing schedule.

I'm pretty certain that we'll see semi-regularly ODST tidbits like the ones you are talking about with past Halo titles, down the road on Bnet. The next month or so however will all be E3 fallout, with plenty of content.

I didn't say writing style. I said style, and then said "different approach". I was referring to the content, not form. It could be a deliberate change in policy. But regardless, it's a different approach than Frank used. That is all.

Shishka you have 30 second respawn on the OS on Cubed, at least in Doubles.

Might wanna get on that. Who's testing your shit before its launched to MM? Do you need help?

i spy 2 gaf maps in bungie favs this week
congrats ghal and grimm

Nice, GAF represent!

Some kid kept spamming me with messages last weekend. I didn't bother reading them until yesterday but one said that my Rise v2 was in Bungie favorites. I'm pretty sure it never was but it was odd nonetheless.

Yeah, that's one thing that I can't make sense of. I remember Omlet complaining about it as well. I thought one of things they touted about Halo 3 was that they were able to update the game easily without relying on title updates. Yet changes only happen once a month if at all and the changes are always bundled together. I assume it's so no one is confused if something is stealth edited but honestly, only a sliver of the Halo population even reads Bnet so why not just tweak shit right when it's ready instead of making players suffer through known, and in many cases painlessly changeable, issues for a month.

And how something like Cubed's 30 sec OS gets through Shishka's thorough testing machine is beyond me.

Thats true he should see the post or your post a month ago, go into work the next day with it written in pen on his hand and should fix it that day. How is that unrealistic when its his job?

I know if I did something wrong I'd be e-mailed and expected to fix it the next night I work.

I would say it's a different approach all together. If you look back at the BWU, there have been content about ODST regularly on there. Lots of interviews but I don't think ODST is in hype mode yet. Is it because of an MS ban on info? Who knows... Hopefully E3 this year brings us something to keep us occupied for a little while. A vidoc, a new trailer, in game play, pictures of urban toilets, something...

Whoa. That is very cool. Thanks guys, that means a lot. :)

It feels good to have something to smile about right now.

Hypothetical question.

Let's say you've had a good job for five and a half years. And that your company has been doing lots of layoffs, but they have subsided and you think you have survived them. And then today your boss tells you the company is doing a "voluntary separation" program for a select handful of employees. And you are one of the employees. Take it, and you get a few months pay and benefits. Don't and there's the "possibility" that you will go anyways, but with a less generous package. You have one week to decide, and you live in the state with the second highest unemployement rate in the US (Oregon).

Oh, and you're just on your way home, and tomorrow is your 10th wedding anniversary. Now decide: pick up that anniversary gift for your wife, or don't because income might be disappearing soon?

Okay, it's not a hypothetical. :(

Sorry to dump this here. Just sitting here, movin' my fingers because my brain is frozen up.

Holy shit. I've been unemployed for a while now and it just sucks. I would recommend rejecting the offering, keeping with the job whilst doing your best to find another in the mean time, basically keep the money coming in for as long as possible. You'll certainly need it if the worse happens.

Last night, Turf II v3 had around 70 downloads :lol

Thanks urk (or whoever) and congrats Ghal and NOKYARD!
just wait till you see the download count by this time next week - Grifball Extreme got 271845 downloads when it was featured and it was a steaming pile of crap (my apologies to the author), of course that was before they started doing a weekly rotation

Grifball High was downloaded 218 times in the time it took to write this post

Holy moly, Ghal. You said that there was a "possibility" of you getting laid off if you didn't take the other offer. Take that possibility head on; like Dani said: keep the money coming as long as possible and try to look for another job in the mean time.

Buy the gift G... (
unless you are talking about $1k expenses here
) You have to think positive. If your wife is happy during this time, she will keep you happy when times get rough... Good luck...

I'd wait and see Ghal. Maybe you can take steps to keep your job in the coming months (ie work harder, act positive, help out bosses).

Also why is my name not next to my map? Glitch?

Grimmm it's a Forge glitch. Sometimes you just have to back out of Forge competely and reload the map and save it for it to save the author name. Must be a way for Bungie to steal the maps and call it their own because under author it will sometimes say Bungie instead of your name... :lol

A few month's pay? That's a generous offer. You might want to consider it if you know you'll get canned within a few weeks, otherwise you should see if they'll keep you and search for another job in the meantime, just in case.

and definitely get the gift.

Just got home. I bought the gift.

I asked some clarifying questions, and my boss is going to gather up answers, or try to. Basically, I want to get a sense of what the odds are here if I stay on that I'll get to, well, stay on. And also weigh that possibility against what a buyout does to unemployment benefits, etc.

Anyhoo. We'll survive. Only debt is the mortgage, got quite a bit of savings amassed. Back to teh Halos. Thanks guys.

Wise move, I think (buying the gift) - though I'd ask why it was 24 hours to your anniversary and you hadn't grabbed it before now. :)

Damn - good luck on the decision; stress goes up either way, I hope it works out for you.

Damn, that's rough to hear Ghal. Keep your chin up.

And if it's any consolation, being a recent graduate sucks too. There are just no jobs out there right now.

(I have NO friggin' clue how you lived through the first shot - you should have been dead as you left the chopper. I kinda think the Guardians agreed with that assessment... :lol :lol )

Awesome. Love how the lasers just kept pounding you at the end. For some reason that had me laughing pretty hard. They wanted to make sure you didn't luck out a second time.

So what are your expectations for E3, Halo wise? I'm expecting a pretty big blowout for Halo 3: ODST, as we haven't seen any in-game stuff yet. Perhaps a trailer, screenshots, secret MP mode reveal, and if we are really lucky - on/off stage demonstration of the game. I'm not really expecting Microsoft's new Halo to be revealed, but CO-OP and other gaming sites really think it's going to happen. I'm trying not to get hyped for that though. :S

Something similar to E3 2007, when Halo 3's campaign debuted. A trailer, in-game demos with the press, interviews and a few features revealed. I expect a feature or two to be held off until a later reveal, ala Forge with Halo 3. But I'd be surprised if we don't have a good feel for the look and and feel of ODST after E3.

I was about to respond with the same; seems like the most reasonable expectation. Hope everything works out for you; seems pretty messed up, although these are pretty messed up times.

As far as any other Halo games: you'd think they'd be somewhere decent in Chronicle's development cycle but I'm sure we won't hear anything about it. The stuff Frankie's gang is working on is probably way to early to cover.

I know they won't do this for ODST, because they don't want to spoil all the new stuff and it's just an expansion, but when they show off the next Halo I hope they do a on-stage demo like E303 where they blew our minds with tons of new features. Going back and watching a cam from E3 I feel like I'm there with all the hooting and hollering for the new BR, the SMGs, the turret, the hijacking, the brutes, all the crazy shit going on, the elite drop pods, etc. That was one of the best E3 Demonstrations ever, excitement was through the roof. Then again... that might raise hype too much and make the wait unbearable. :lol

E3 fever is kicking in. O_O

Stlighly OT: I've been watching a lot of monster movies lately (a fascination since I was a kid, but just recently started up again). One of the ones I saw a few weeks ago was Slither - which was pretty great - but I was struck at how similar the creature is to the Flood. A few details aside, it's essentially the same idea: (spoiler tagged so someone doesn't get all pissed about a movie spoiler in the middle of a game thread):
A creature that goes from planet to planet, infecting and absorbing all sentient life into its own. There's a main creature that is a gooey mix of the infected corpses of fallen enemies that serves as the central hive mind, controlling all the other creatures. It infects other people and turns them into giant bloated "carriers", which burst and send out small creatures to infect others. Once the small creatures infect them (by crawling through their mouth) they turn into zombie-like creatures controlled by the hive mind, and go around as soldiers attacking others. Rinse, repeat, until all life is absorbed. The main difference is how he's ultimately defeated.

Big block of text. But I thought the similarities were striking.

Yes the Halo story is about as generic and cliched as it gets.

Speaking of horrendous things that infect people, Vhfive bought Sacred 2. What kind of world do we live in?

It's hard to beleive that it's summer already and E3 is right around the corner. It's like Christmas but on a television. I took the last of my finals today and I couldn't be happier.

Mhm, like if someone from Bungie were to come on stage and play a level/area from ODST that's strikingly familiar to the E3' 03 mission from Halo 2's Mombasa? :P
