Halo 3: ODST - Everything we know so far

Woah, I didn't see this. Some of your squad-mates will have Recon?

WHile reading the update I was really expecting Joystick to win that first match on the borked Sandbox. When they got up 1-0. But apparently Shishka actually plays Halo and can own some fools.

HaloGAF customs tomorrow. Ghaleon, are you done with your new(est) map yet?

Shishka can generally beat me fairly easily. I consider myself more of a KevRo/Juices level player.

I am intrigued as to who Shishka compares to. An OuterWorldVoice breakdown is required.

Here's a question, which will probably not be answered for some time.

It's assumed that ODST will have all the multiplayer content from Halo 3, including Mythic and the 3 last maps not yet released. It's generally also assumed that a large portion of Halo 3 players will buy ODST and have it replace Halo 3 because of the Halo 3 multiplayer inclusion. Well, about about those folks wanting to get Recon and all the achievements in Halo 3. It's not far fetched to assume that people will either want Recon or complete all the achievements.

So will those folks then, go out and buy ODST, have all the maps and multiplayer content, only to have the buy the final Halo 3 map pack, ie maps they will already own if they buy ODST, just to complete the achievements/Recon?

I dunno, maybe I am reading too far ahead and things will change, but I am seeing butt hurt similar to the Halo Wars bitching if some players are "buying" maps twice, once with ODST and separately with Halo 3. It wouldn't surprise me if some folks felt entitled to be able to get Recon and complete their Halo 3 achievements when they gets their hands on all maps with ODST, only to find they need to obtain the maps a second time, via the Halo 3 disk.

Of course, we don't know much specifics yet, but I have a feeling.

I would think Bungie would inculde the ability to rip the three maps from Halo ODST...

Or offer a code when you buy it.

Think of ODST like the map pack that was released for the original XBOX... except now ODST has it's own version of multiplayer and a campaign.

I'm confused by your post - are you suggesting that even though ODST comes with all Halo 3 multiplayer maps, that folks might STILL have to buy the final three maps separately to finish their achievements? Why on earth would that be true?

There has been no word yet about whether the last three Mythic maps will be available separately from ODST - I'm guessing that it's possible, after some delay (past the release of ODST), since Halo 3 owners who are only interested in multiplayer will have everything in the ODST package EXCEPT the ODST campaign (which they might not want) and those three maps... but whether that's the case or not, folks who buy ODST will NOT be penalized for doing so. (Well, past the "some of what you're paying for you already own" part that we already know about.)

What I mean is, I imagine ODST having it's own achievements, etc. Seperate from Halo 3's achievements. So, with ODST, a person will have all the maps. Most likely ODST players will also have Halo 3 and probably completed some achievements, but certainly not all.

So, if you have Halo 3 and ODST, you have access to every Halo 3 map on the ODST disc, but how would that help you unlock achievements from the Halo 3 disc? The last few achievements, and Recon require all maps, so would you have to buy the last map pack to get these even though you have will have purchased ODST and have access to all the maps anyway?

I wonder actually how they will solve this. I can't see them including codes or anything with ODST, most likely all the content will be on disc. Will ODST and Halo 3 share achievements? That's also unlikely.

As far as I am aware, achievements, and recon since it's tied to achievements, are tied directly to a game. Game x will have it's own achievements and Game x: Expansion will have it's own achievements. It seem's Bungie's backend will treat ODST essentially like Halo 3 since you'll be able to fire up multiplayer and keep on going with your stats and profile, but achievements aren't linked to Bungie's backend, but to the individual games.

For example, if I am not making myself clear.
Ghost Patrol On Longshore, get 3 kills with a Ghost during any ranked or social match.

If I fulfill the requirements for this achievement on the ODST disc, does it also unlock the achievement on the Halo 3 disc? If not, then would a separate purchase of the final map pack be needed for this?

Of course, my assumptions are based on the idea that ODST will feature achievements separate from Halo 3. I would think it's safe to assume that ODST would have new and unique achievements.

Tired of holding the R trigger down? Try holding it then holding back then letting go of the trigger. Magic! It changed my life! Thanks Halo 3!

and lol was just in a game with score at 49-49 and got a double beatdown for the win.

Has geomerging in the default Sandbox area been discovered, yet? I'm not talking about moving items into the sand dunes, but rather a "Block, Tall" item halfway into the ground. I tried Googling, but I've just seen old techniques (which I was never good at, nor practiced).

Does it the ranking system not take into account 2nd or place finishes, but I still haven't moved up :/

Oh and can one of you talented folks here please remake Hang em high through Forge on Sandbox. That'd be awesome.

Whomever made the Mage v2 map did a really good job. That was the first time I played on it earlier with you guys and I immediately DL'd it from somebody's file share. Really had the feel of Warlock.

The Midship remake was pretty good too. Only issue was everything looked the same (brown) so it was hard to kind of hard to piece things together, or at least not as easily as Mage/Warlock.

Could be wrong here or maybe I don't fully follow the question, but as I understand it, achievements are tied to the title ID, not the game. Theoretically, you could have a dozen title ID's on one DVD. It's my understanding that the DVD for Halo 3: ODST will have a "Halo 3" title ID (same one we have now) and the "Halo 3: ODST" title ID -- which means that you can get achievements for more than one title on a single Xbox 360 disc.

Nope. But I really, really want to get three films on Entrenched for submission to Atlas, if there's time. A multi-flag, slayer and assault match. Though I know lots of maps need some love.

Cool, glad you guys enjoyed yourselves. If you can remember any of the good maps you were able to grab off the internet, I'd love to see some links to them.

I had some fun matches with some of GAF earlier. I'd much rather play normal gametypes as opposed to stuff like infection but I did enjoy getting boosted out of Foundation thanks to Ro and jumping in and to infect a bunch of folks held up in the room with warthogs.

Wow. I've been away from my 360 for the last two weeks, so I haven't looked at any of the GAF custom maps. But I'll definitely check this one out when I'm back.

I only really know the Warlock version (from Halo 2), though, so I was a little sad to see a lack of grav lifts at the sides of the bases. It looks like the jumps up there shouldn't be too difficult to make, though, so it's probably not an issue.

Okay, that's interesting. Whether MS will consider it kosher is another thing altogether though. Wouldn't having multiple title IDs screw up things like the dashboard icon and the last games played list, though?

We had this discussion a few days ago on PA and the conclusion I came to was that even if MS won't let ODST unlock H3 achievements on the console itself, it's not like Bungie don't have the power to do it through their system. They already track a bunch of stats - all the need to do is track if you meet the requirements for a H3 achievement while in ODST, and then next time you boot H3 tell it to unlock those achievements. It's a little clunky, but it would work. It would probably require another H3 patch, though.

YES. I got to play my first few GAF custom games tonight! It was a lot of fun. I, too, think I'm a little more partial to the more traditional game types. Infection was alright. It was my first time playing a lot of those gametypes(I particularly liked paintball) and forged maps. I had never played the forged "8 emerald legs" map on Blackout. That was awesome. Anyway, I hope I can join in on the fun saturday night too.

On a separate note, I need lessons on how to forge. I feel like Im doing something wrong when trying make a simple straight line of walls. I can never get anything flush, or perfectly in line with each other. Is that just one of the nuances of forge, or am I missing something?

My first few versions had Grav lifts, but any way I put them you could still get into the front of the base. You could also get onto the BR platforms if you tried. The jumps can only get you one place: The base, just like the air lifts in Warlock.

I'm still open to a grav lift being there if it could be made to work properly, but so far Ive not seen a way to get it done.

On a separate note: The video of vhfives Flying Dutchman I made form a GAF custom a few weeks ago has gained a ridiculous number of views since yesterday morning. From 500 or so to 3,100+. They really like that map over on B.net. Ive got 20 odd comments saying "copy and paste if bungie sent you here.". Those crazy B.net kids :lol

Edit: Aaaaand I just found out why! I didn't realise It was linked to from Bungie :lol I'm so retarded.

You do bring up a good point; I've been wondering about this as well. The most logical conclusion I can come up with is that ODST will allow players to install certain maps onto the hard drive so it can be accessed through both games.

You follow the question just fine. =)

Theoretically, so there be any examples of this before though? I don't think any game so far has done this. It may or may not be possible.

It's clear that, right now, we just don't know how they will achieve syncing up the two titles and achievements.

From reading interviews for ODST, it seems that many outlets are saying you get RECON with ODST, providing you unlock the right achievements, the vidmaster challenges. These are clearly Halo 3 achievements introduced in the last title update. If buying ODST lets you unlock Recon, it's natural to assumed Bungie have indeed found a solution to this problem. However, there is always a chance that there could be some mis-interpretation regarding the specifics.

Yeah, I can't see the dashboard being happy about multiple game ID's, if, in fact, that is the solution used here.

A special Bungie backend fix? It's seems clear that some kind of special fix is required, however they do it. I think this does seem likely. I would be hard to imagine another solution.

That wouldn't solve the potential problem of fulfilling an achievement requirement on ODST, but needing Halo 3 to actually unlock it. It's the first thing I thought of, but it certainly wouldn't solve it.

Ah, I see. As I said, I never really played Wizard, so it just seemed strange to me at first. I'll definitely give your map a try once I'm back (two weeks, can't wait). Warlock was pretty good for small slayer matches in Halo 2, and it had plenty of opportunities for effective grenade use. From what I can tell, your map looks very faithful to that!

I think I read somewhere that there won't be any achievements for the Halo 3 MM maps on ODST, it'll just be campaign.

Did they remove Rocket Race? That was my favorite non-coop mode, but when I last checked (which may have been weeks or months, I forget), it wasn't on the playlist.

Brainpan - get all Mythic map skulls - 25G

According to interviews and sites, with ODST, you can get Recon, right? Well that above achievement is required. If that is in ODST, why wouldn't the others be?

If that was the case, it leads to the original problem I predict. If people have all the maps with ODST, would they need to additionally "repurchase" the final map pack, Mythic Part 2, to get all the achievements from Halo 3?

I can't help but think that Bungie had a completely different plan in mind when they originally released the last title update and the new achievements.

Games can detect achievements from others. Gears 2 does this, as does Castle Crashers and a few others. Theoretically, ODST would check H3's achievements for the Vidmasters, and its own Vidmasters, and if they're all unlocked then it fires something to Bungie's servers saying "hey, let this guy use Recon armour.' And then it's selectable from the menu in both ODST and H3. Armour permutations are already stored online rather than locally. This isn't anything new.

I don't think that's really a problem. They're different games, after all. Sure, it'd be nice if they were able to cross-pollinate, but I don't think it's high on their priorities.

I don't know, maybe. Clearly I'm just guessing based on what we've been told so far.

This isn't a great example, because it's not an Xbox 360 title, but Splinter Cell: Chaos Theory is the sort of approach I've expected. In Chaos Theory, there are three modes, three separately-crafted game experiences: one for campaign, one for adversarial multiplayer and one for cooperative campaign -- all of which are extremely different. If you've played the game, you can tell that operate on an individual basis just by navigating through the protracted and egregious UI, despite being stored on a single DVD.

Ignorant question: How does the Orange Box work? How many title ID's are on that disc? Do they have separate achievements? How does it show up in the dash?

So it could operate that way, changing title ID's when the player accesses different parts of the UI, or simply be "Halo 3: ODST" full time with the embedded title ID of Halo 3 when it comes to Halo 3-specific achievements. Despite the wealth of content the disc will apparently hold, the game itself is still an expansion package. I don't know if there'd be any issue with the game showing itself as Halo 3: ODST in the dashboard/last games played, yet being able to unlock achievements for both title ID's when needed.

As for Dani and his acheivement discussion... To be honest, I don't really care whether the acheivements work or not. I mean, what do you get? A few numbers added to a score that means nothing and will get you nothing.

I actually don't care that much. Feel free to check out my low gamerscore and ps3 trophy collection. I enjoy games in my own fashion irrespective of e-peins.

Just pointing out something I think may cause some folks to be butt hurt. It's generally accepted that if a potential issue exists that can be butt hurt over, there will be butt hurt by some.

If Halo Wars shows, butt hurt can dampen the overall community's perception. Thankfully though this doesn't seem to be that big of an issue. It still remains to be seen.

Hmm, your idea does sound like it would work.

Good points. Those games were designed with achievement detection in mind, no? It's not realistic to assume ODST can do this, but what about the H3 disk? Will it know that I have unlocked achievements in ODST? What if some kid unlocks Recon in ODST to find it won't work on Halo 3 because Halo 3 doesn't recognise all his achievements?

For all we know there could be a simple solution to all this and the questions I am raising are easily dealt with. That would be great. I'm hoping this is the case, but I'm just trying to find out if it easy or if it's a potential issue in future.

Doesn't matter what we get, but some of us like/care about achievements because they are fun to get and extend the playability of a game. Getting achievements can be satisfying, and that is reward enough.

This isn't really related to the ODST portion of your discussion, but we do not have the ability to unlock Achievements for players based on stats dumps for Halo 3. It would be nice if it was as simple as you outlined, but it's definitely not.

It'll be more like Bungie.net profiles who have completed all of the Vidmaster's Achievements will have an option to "Unlock Recon" that a user can click. Once that option is selected by the Bungie.net user then a bunch of other stuff happens behind the scenes and voila the player will have Recon.
