... what?

If you're referring to the fact that I got pissed off when someone posted a potential Mass Effect spoiler in the GDC thread without spoiler tagging it, then go right the fuck ahead and jest away, motherfucker.

I knew I heard that shit somewhere. Eastbound and Down is awesome. Last episode was good. Predictably but still entertaining.

I'd say being forced to wait for maps if you don't buy a special edition counts as a "completely ridiculous inconvenience".

If MS was in Valve's position, they'd release the Critic's Choice Edition of Left 4 Dead (it contains the Survival Pack) before the Survival Pack, hold back the update for several weeks, and finally let it drop after they wring-dry a little money out of the proceedings. Valve following its policy of "don't screw the customer" (a direct quote of Gabe's), they're releasing the Survival Pack for free to everybody, before the Critic's Choice Edition even hits the shelves. And the irony of all this is that Valve will benefit enormously because of it whilst MS seems to continue to chase nickels and dimes and not loyal customers.

I honestly am sort of upset people feel like 10 dollars is too much for H3 maps that we will play 100's of games on. I'm not pissed actually lately I've been feeling good, but Epic has released more maps relatively quicker, you can't really even count Mythic yet since most people can't actually get them yet.

You can hate greedy M$ all you want but this is the company that gave us Bungie which gave us Halo which gives us hours of pleasure. Think of all the pleasure M$ gives to people everyday through the use of their OS's and games and other thingers. They are giving the world so much more joy than the money they are taking. And you fucks are so ungreatful. Theres people who dont have houses and interwebs and shit and you feel you can argue about giving a company 10 dollars to continue its operations. It kind of does make me upset. Then again I actually don't give a fuck. :)

backflip shits weird i was trying to post the last swat game (WHERE I WENT POSITIVE AND YOU WENT NEGATIVE :) ) we played but its not even there... the last game i see in my list is the game penguins got booted and we ran shit on host against NZ'ers. But seriously get your xbox shit ready to go cause we have a lot of kids to dong on.

also all this sticking up for MS and Bungie from ME. Thats gotta mean somethign right? This is one thing I'm actually on Bungies side about for ONCE.

Ah, I found the game you were talking about. In my defense, they were all Elites and my shots just refused to connect. I remember going back and watching the replay of that game because I was really pissed off and I could see the shots connecting with their Elite faces but I wasn't being given the kill. I hate when you get off-host starts in SWAT.

And I won't have my box till Easter b/c fucking MS couldn't ship it to my fucking school.

I think most people feel this way. If your an adult and understand how capitalism works- there is really no fault in MS's ways. This surge in wealth that will come from all the Halo Wars/Mythic Maps will continue to make the Halo universe fun for years to come.

Valve experiences significant boosts of profitability after doing things for free. Ergo, there isn't just one good method for selling your crap and Microsoft doesn't need any excuses.

Also the fact that this map pack has been ascribed a near-deity-like status partly because of its exclusivity.

Good point- I guess it just depends on how developers and publishers plan things out. In this case, it seemed things got a little hairy. Even with the delay of ODST announcement- I think it's just part of the Bungie/MS breaking away process. I'm sure further down the road, in whatever comes next, we won't have to wait a year for DLC due to this learning process. The concept of DLC on a console is still in it's baby stages. Figuring out a good distribution method for a specific IP takes work and time.

Very true about the DLC taking time. I just kinda wish gamers wouldn't accept all this stuff so easily, it's just giving MS the impression a whole bunch of us like getting shafted on DLC. I'm probably not alone in thinking Bungie's future games will be much better off without MS's "LET'S ATTACH A PRICE TAG TO EVERYTHING ALL THE TIME" strategy.

Bungie posted a MMP code in their status when they reached 10K fans. Thought that was pretty funny.

And 10K in five days? Impressive.

That is pretty impressive. I can't believe how fast that shit spreads. I hope their facebook actually serves a purpose soon- right now it's pointless. However, least their hip now- maybe they will list their favorite bands as MGMT or The Arcade Fire on the info page.

I have a feeling Bungie freed from Microsoft's content control will be a very different animal than they are now, in terms of how their content is handled. Which is why I'm very excited about the still far away Project #3.

But seriously, if I had a decent PC and only had it and Valve games I'd probably be a pretty happy gamer. TF2, Counterstrike, and L4D for my multiplayer gaming with punctuations of games like Half-Life and Portal.

3 or 4 other Valve-like developers making equally awesome games and I wouldn't have any desire for a thousand other developers making some sequel that pleases their tight as publishers. It's without a doubt a pie-in-the-sky vision but it'd be great nonetheless.

As am I. I'm glad Bungie was able to break off before the repetition of Halo game after Halo game effected their team's creativity and passion. If Bungie were able to attain a Valve-like position it would be amazing.

Hey guys, this is a map I've been working on

Project #3 is probably a LONG ways away. No time to think about it right now.

ODST and #2 have me most excited (especially #2; TNBT™).

And before anyone brings the argument full circle:

Microsoft was a great publisher and partner to Bungie. They saved Bungie from a desperate financial situation. They heeded Bungie's desire not to be absorbed into the greater MGS organization, retaining their own identity and style (as in the famous story of Bungie tearing down the walls in the office building Microsoft provided them). It was Microsoft that helped Bungie set up their own free-standing state of the art studio in Kirkland, outside the Microsoft campus, in the first place.

And Halo would not be what it is now without Microsoft. Their promotions of all three Halo games often spilled over in to brilliant. I Love Bees anyone? They let Bungie innovate in content distribution, with the Halo 2 map packs not only becoming free after a set time period, but they let Bungie announced that they were going to be free and about when it would happen, before the maps even came out. At the time, it was a pretty remarkable arrangement. And one that worked.

And right through the release of the Heroic Map Pack, which used the same system, I had no reservations about Microsoft as publisher of Halo, aside from a general concern that they would milk the franchise (which hasn't yet happened). All was looking well on the Halo 3 front.

And then of course, something went wrong. I don't know if some kind of internal pissing match erupted, the guys at Microsoft went batshit insane, or what but from the time Heroic went free, MS has been fucking with Bungie and their content to the detriment of the Halo community and Bungie themselves.

So I simultaneously acknowledge the great good Microsoft did Bungie - and vice versa - while at the same time can't wait until Bungie is free of the newly crazy/stupid/greedy publisher that is the current Microsoft.

Beaver Creek remake is almost geometrically complete. Ran out of money though and I can't think of a way to get enough back without deleting the two light orbs I have. Really breaks my heart thinking about it because the crypt is really dark and dank and BC was so nice and sunny. In a perfect world I'd have an extra $80 for a set of lights designationg red and blue base as well as a pair in the middle to illuminate the rest of the map. Has me bummed so I'm not sure I'll be going back and trying to finish it.

The Crypt is very dark... I'm assuming the filters are more of that, a filter, as opposed to a genuine light source.

My map has largely become beaver creek inspired even though I started off the idea of the map as 2 open tunnels in a small map. As I was building the map, I took queue's from how I remembered enjoying Beaver Creek and borrowed a couple of those elements. One element was being able to flag cap with teammates properly positioned so that you can get a flag from grab to cap within just a few short seconds with the help of the teleporter and well placed flag throws and catches. If you don't have help, then the only way out is a slow walk out of the base.

Was there a reference/pic you had that showed the spawn points to Beaver Creek?

Going to sound naive here, but I think it's just a bit of denial on Microsoft's part that an entity so popular, huge and innovative wanted to 'split' and be independent.

ex: An angry boyfriend is mad that his girlfriend decided to break off the relationship, all the while still wanting to be 'best friends, but not dating'. The boyfriend would then harass her, write grafitti on their school's walls making fun of her, etc. for months to make her feel bad for what she did and make her deal with false consequences.

There then comes a point where the guy just says to himself "fuck it" and doesn't care anymore and decides to stop.

That'll happen in due time with the big M.

Not quite sure what you mean. If you put a blue and a red light orb right next to one another they act as a great light source and really liven up the environment. They don't act like filters at all.

I never found one. My plan was/is to just look at some youtube videos of people playing BC and fill in where I find necessary.

I kinda doubt MS is as butt-hurt as you make it sound (hyperbole understood), but it baffles me that MS wouldn't just let Bungie do absolutely whatever they want. I mean they gave Bungie more freedom than most publishers would but still, Activision is the epitome of money-happy mega corporation yet they just let Blizzard do whatever the fuck they want because they know that whatever they do, and however long it takes them to do it, they'll eventually make something profitable and successful. I believe that while Bungie, or any other developer, will never make something as financially successful as Blizzard, they were good enough to hold a similar position under Microsoft. Yet MS has made them rush many of their games and forced their own distribution policies on Bungie. MS could still have Bungie if they'd have just loosened up the leash a bit.

Not that I'm drawing any conclusions, or anything, but here's a little timeline:

December 11, 2007: Heroic Map Pack goes on sale, with plans to make it free 4 months later

February, 2008: Don Mattrick hired by as an outside advisor to Microsoft's Entertainment and Devices Division

March 25, 2008: Heroic Map Pack becomes free

April 15, 2008: Legendary Map Pack goes on sale

July 7, 2008: Bungie releases Cold Storage for free (but with serious limitations, added against their wishes)

Late July, 2008: Mattrick becomes senior vice president of Microsoft's Interactive Entertainment Business division

Since Cold Storage, Bungie seems to have had zero control over release dates of ANY Halo-related material. There are no plans to make any more Bungie-created, Halo-related content free.

The filters rarely every work for me when in an actual game, more-so in split-screen. :\ It's a shame.

Found this in another thread...

I meant to say that if there was a "brighten" this map FX filter that can be applied but I'm guessing there isnt. I know about the Red/Blue turning into white light however which is cool but eats up more budget if you have to place them in multiple spots in the crypt.

The Temple map looks interesting and will have some great vehicle battles for sure.

This really made me laugh. All that Gears 2 map talk earlier and then this. Another map pack! :lol

Halo 3 loses the map pack fight!
I'm just kidding. I don't really care.

Nice observations. I also wonder if Bungie saw that they were losing control over their DLC content and that's why they stopped making new maps after Mythic which were done by early fall (shortly after the Cold Storage release). I know Bungie's released about as much content for Halo 3 as they did 2 but I just expected more as digital distribution has become much stronger and their DLC development teams become more experienced and efficient.

Hope that isn't the case. I want Bungle to make Halo 4.
Perhaps Bungie didn't want to go and make Halo 4. Thus Bungie recruits some people who can go on to create a completely awesome addition to the Halo franchise e.g. Frank, Corinne Yu etc.

Even if it was a different team, something tells me Bungie wouldn't be excluded from the games development. It depends how pissy they were when they split with Microsoft.

The real question with Halo 4 is what's difference in Pizza at the Bungie campus vs. MS campus during the XBL and Pizza sessions?

Peperoni, hawaiian, combo, thai chicken, or has it been dialed down to just hot pockets?

Halo Chronicles.

Wasn't Mattrick the one who just blurred out during a random MTV Multiplayer Interview that it was a new Halo title (now ODST) Bungie was supposed to announce at E3? :(

Yes. That was maybe the stupidest interview ever.

"So Don, why did you decide not to show the new Bungie Halo game during the E3 presentation?"

"What with Lips and You're in the Movies, the presser was so awesome that adding another awesome announcement would have surely ended in a catastrophic riot. So I decided to take the careful, clever approach and blurt it out to you instead."

P.S. I demand to know more about Halo Chronicles aka OUAPJHP (Officially Untitled Awesome Peter Jackson Halo Project).
