Sorry about not joining you guys for customs, was working on getting gold on all levels in Halo Wars and I'm just not in an H3 mood lately, maybe next time.

When selecting your maps in custom, it should be at the top of the list saying something like "recent maps" and click on that.

as always customs was fun times tonight. i found paintball and basketbrawl to be a lot of fun


i forgot to ask but what did you guys think of "widow beta" it is still in the works
including finding a name that doesn't suck
but i thought i would test the overall design of the map tonight. any suggestions/comments would be greatly appreciated
even if they are negative

I thought it was great, but to be honest the central tower having a navigable roof is overdoing it, IMO.

Thanks. I'd deleted the wrong iteration of my map by mistake, and REALLY wanted it back. It was in there. Thank god.

Spawns down. Objective markers going in next. Should be done (again) tonight.

It's got some rough edges, but I want to gather some feedback to see if they're worth polishing off.
 
Bladed, did you happen to make any changes to Mage v2? or was that the last release you did for it?

Was just messing around on it and found a couple more things to maybe fix?

-There was still a spawn point up in the middle level of Sandbox.
-Also the rocks that you have on the inside of the walls of the middle stucture do not appear at game start rather they appear i believe 60 seconds later.
-Also this still does not have the little ledge above the lifts to push you in the base.

This was Still Mage V2, so maybe i am behind and you already have Mage V3.
 
Introducing Centrifugal.

Finished rebuilding it for the second time.

Concept: Opposing bases are elevated and difficult to get into, and there is no direct way through the center of the map. All routes wrap around the sides (thus the name). Only direct way into a base is from a single bridge. The center elevated platform can be reached from high and low roads on either side, and can be used to leap into the base. Final third way: use a grav lift to enter the base from below.

Alternately, save them for the most direct way to cap a flag:

The lower level of the center contains the rockets, which when taken to the elevated platform make the occupants of the opposing base the proverbial fish in a barrel.

It's a very simple layout that was extraordinarily complex to build; my biggest fear is that it's too simple and combat just isn't very interesting on it. Map movement flows well though.

Note: There are some rough edges. Some elevated surfaces have a few bumpy spots. There are some (small) gaps in floors and walls that need fixing. I spent a really long time trying to clean that stuff up - many hours - but it needs another polish pass. This version is intended to get feedback on the layout, and if no major changes are needed I'll polish it up. There are some minor geometry changes I'd like to make, but resources are, shall we say, scarce.

the customs were fun. too bad we only played a handful. hopefully we can start getting more of haloGAF into these customs and do some 8v8s and add some variety to the games.
 
Not sure about the spawn placement from what I've seen. One team member on each team is facing directly at the other. Any lag in that situation is an almost instant death.

I really like what you've done with the corners. Luring someone in there when you have a Mauler is going to be super satisfying. I also really like the sightlines if you're standing on the top of the canopy.

I got sick of looking at that map :lol so i didnt fix any of the little bugs. Theres a few vresions i got sent back that fixed it but most of the fixes are easy enough for anyone to do on their own. By the time i realsied there were more problems it had been downloaded a tonne already so i thought bugger it :/

Sorry for not joining you guys, but I just really can't keep with you all. I tried a couple times and you guys are just too good. My average life is like 0.02 seconds and I rarely even get one kill.

I had my wife, brother, and a non-xbox-owning friend playing with me, and I have to go easy on them. You guys would've had no mercy on us. I'd've given it a go if I had been alone though. Maybe next time.
 
vhfive, I thought that the beta version of Widow was very solid (maybe not for 2v2 against KevinRo and the map's creator, but still), but there are a couple things I had qualms with. One of the biggest problems that I had with it was that once one team gains control of the top middle, it's very difficult for the other team to stage a comeback, as you could see by the final score of the match that we played. I think that it's a little too difficult to get to the middle if you're on the bottom of the map; the step-type things that are attached to the middle are difficult to use, especially if you're being shot at. Maybe consider another method of allowing players to jump from the bottom up to top mid? All that said, I really liked the map so far -- it kind of feels like a more compact, more fun Foundaton.
 
Ok so after following your tips I realize I suck. Maybe I am playing to much Team Slayer Ranked. What would you guys say is the best playlist to play in order to improve? I was thinking Social Rumble pit.

I would definitely stick with social playlists to at least get the proper mechanics and timings down. The only problem with rank playlists at low levels is the over abundance of alt. accounts that aren't representative of the given skill level. Try playing social skirmish and social slayer; they have gametypes that are more similar to what you would find during ranked matches.
 
After seeing the update, it makes me sad that I didn't go through my Scarab encounter where I went superman like the picture posted. I guess I'll just have to wait to shell out cold hard points in April.

Team Slayer is nice but playing at low levels you will face off against some pretty awful players and in turn you wont learn much from beating them.

Yea all the other weapons in Halo are nice and pretty and make purply explosions but to actually improve the most important thing is to learn how to get headshots and quick kills with the BR. So choose a competitive playlist with BR starts (MLG). If you can't even control the reticule enough to get those kills then you aren't ready yet, but if your eye hand dexterity is up to it go in and see what you can do. If you don't want to play in an MLG playlist try and get some better players to play with you in a custom game of BRs on Octagon. Its a custom map on Foundry that's just a round room with absolutely nothing in it and you just spawn and shoot and spawn and shoot.

Every high level player has the BR as their tool of destruction, the reason is is that its still the most versatile yet powerful weapon you will use in the game.

Other ways to improve is to
1. Rewatch film.
2. Go into Forge and learn the spawn points.
3. Walk around the maps and learn some cool nade points and bounces.
4. Memorize the spawn times on all the power weapons including powerups, sniper, and rockets.
5. Play with people better than you.

Vhfive, you should be proud of yourself: Sanctum is a lot of fun, and a good map. Hope to see it in matchmaking.

I played on Rise yesterday...I thought it was alright, but forgettable. We played slayer on it, but I think it would work better with objective games.

As always, Sanctum played awesomely.

As for Widow Maker, I think it is a good map. I'm not quite sure that I beleive in what Backflip said about the middle controlling the map too easily. When our entire team held the middle, Kevinro threw a power drainer and cleared us all out. There is plenty of cover around the sides and down below you can make a surprise attack to top middle.

Ha, you should have stayed longer. We played a couple of really fun stupid games like paintball and Basketbrawl. Much fun was had on those. Kevin's leet skills were negated by plasma pistols and hammers... lots and lots of hammers.

Ghaleon: We were going to play your map last night, but Dax said it wasn't finished and so we didn't get to play it. If only you had finished it a few hours earlier, we could have playtested it for you.
backflip was just mad because he got beat so bad. ;P

jk i think it was because when we played there were more players so it was a lot harder to control the top with so many people attacking from different directions.

some things im going to change are the "steps" leading to the top of the base. i knew that i needed to redo them but i wanted to playtest it anyways. im also going to make it easier to stay on top of the structure with needler in it (i wonder how many people actually went up there). it should make attacking the center easier and harder for a team to completely control top middle. and i will probably play with top middle a little bit, still not sure if i like it.
 
Redid the starting spawns on my map so they are not so blindingly bad (it was late), and re-upped it to file share. Should anyone test it, please use the new version.

I wouldn't be surprised if there were a few easter eggs left in Halo 3. I liked the Canadian dollar buried in the ice on the Snowbound map. It reminds me of the story of when Canada won the gold in 2002 (in Ice Hockey).. there was a loonie buried in the ice for good luck.

Play 3 games of Team Slayer Ranked (all different maps) and I'll go through them and critique them for you. Post them in your file share and post a link to your GT on the thread.

I vaguely remember either Frankie or Luke saying that there was still a big easter egg to be found in Halo 2/3. I think it was Frankie so it might have been Halo 2, but I'm not comepletely sure how long ago it was.
 
I remember a joblisting for Microsoft's internal Halo team (Spawnpoint Studios?) looking for someone with experience in the Crytek and Unreal engines. Now that Crytek 3 has been announced, maybe the next internal Halo game will use CryEngine3, and perhaps even may be a show-off title at GDC? It does seem a bit early since ODST isn't even out yet, but Halo: Chronicles has been announced at X06 and we have seen nothing of it yet. /Rampant Speculation
