And Shiska, I am sorry for doubting your piece of Orbital poetic prowess earlier, I can definitely see it now.

As far as maps go, Orbital has something of a learning curve to it. Similar to Construct, your motion tracker may fool you or make you paranoid, especially since the halls can feel a bit claustrophobic.

It's an excellent 5v5 objective map, though. I've also got an Infection variant made to be introduced at a later date. The humans start in the upper base, looking through the windows at the infected as they take of running out of the lower base and into the halls.

Really looking forward to getting these. My regular gang of gaming buddies have mostly stopped playing Halo 3 and I've a feeling the maps are going to tempt them back.

Shiska, so with the reveal of Sandbox out of the way now, when are you going to reveal the proposed maps coming out of Sandbox for MM (or has it not been ironed out yet)? Some people are still viewing the mythic map pack 1 as just having 3map but from the sounds of it, there will be quite a few variants the maps making it into the mythic mm playlist.

So far I counted 4 maps from sandbox from the screens that look like they could make their way into MM. Or am I giving myself more false hope and the maps in the screens are just for demo purposes and off screen has a killball with spawnpoints inside it? :lol

Looks like a few long hallways, one set higher than the other and overlooking the lower at points, with choke points at the intersections. I still don't have a feel for the overall layout, but conceptually it sounds pretty simple.

Team Mythic will have three Sandbox variants: The default variant, the Grifball variant in the basement, and "Tundra," another basement variant.

Beyond that, there are multiple candidates for Matchmaking; including two more basement variants, three or four ground level variants, and three or four sky variants, spread across all formats of Matchmaking (FFA, Dubs, 4v4, 5v5, 6v6 and 8v8).

The plan is to polish these other variants until Mythic hits marketplace, at which time I will give Sandbox the spotlight Foundry never had.

I played three variants of Sandbox in the short time I was part of that group: Cubed (in the Sky Bubble), Vindictive (main floor, lots of ramps for vehicle jumping), and Tundra (downstairs). Hmm... and I guess the Grifball variant, too... forgot about that. Apparently, there were a couple of others played before I got there, too. (Plurality, and another ground-floor one.)

All the ones I saw had staying power - they're all solid enough for matchmaking now (well, Cubed might need a little more work). I'm really impressed with what can be done with Sandbox.

It's way not-simple. It's really hard to wrap your head around... at least in the few games I've played so far. I keep thinking I'm gonna come up behind someone... and then they pop out of a wall behind me.

Ruh-roh. I'll be hopelessly lost.

But who am I kidding. I'll play a few games on Orbital, a few on Assembly - mostly staring at the skybox - I'll be living on Sandbox as far as Mythic maps are concerned. BTB for lyfe.

My DLC games played:

Rat's Nest: 225
Standoff: 199
Avalanche: 185
Foundry: 47
Ghost Town: 47
Blackout: 17
Cold Storage: 4

Not anywhere near as interesting as the new maps, but I thought this was intriguing:

windows-mobile-65-ofc-1.jpg

I work in the mobile industry so I had to take a gander at this when it was announced. This is a shot of Windows Mobile 6.5's new GUI. The thing that caught my eye in the honeycomb design, which looks practically identical to the visual motif struck in early Halo 3 graphics -- something we talked a lot about here on GAF.

I'm actually a bit surprised to see it because it doesn't look very effective from a mobility standpoint, but I just thought it was interesting that Halo 3 effectively used this visual element in almost every aspect of its marketing (and still does) and then, all of a sudden, the mobile division of the same company adopts it as a revolutionary GUI? Heh.

Do they have a date when it will start into the wild? My current phone has Windows Mobile 6.1. I didn't even think about the honeycomb relationship when some of those screen leaked previsouly.

Excellent. Thanks, Wu.:D Got a question, though: How did that person die in the first Orbital video? What did he accidentally jump into?

If you take into account all three levels in Sandbox, it's definitely the largest Halo map, by far.

Awesome news. This has been my greatest concern/hope/fear/desire surrounding Sandbox. The map's potential, along with great initial launch variants made by Bungie, and a concentrated map making/submitting community like Atlas makes Halo 3 MM's future very bright.

And please reset the ranks in squad battle so we can play it again.

There's a 'Pit of Doom' - it's marked on both sides with a striped barrier, but if you're moving fast enough, you can jump from the higher side (where he started) to the lower side. If you don't jump far enough... death.

(I had no idea it was a pit the first time I saw it. I drove a mongoose up to the lower barrier, jumped off, and leapt over... and died. Oops...)

Artistically it just looks strange. I can't recall an area in Halo 3 that looks anything like that. It's all blue and grey.
From what I can tell, its visual draw is its biggest selling point. I remember when Frank first started talking about way back in like the Winter of 2007 (YES THE FRIGGIN WINTER OF 2007). He said it was a looker then, even that it was probably the best looking map in Halo’s history. The little I’ve seen of it seems to confirm his statement.

The real test of its mettle isn’t how good it looks though, but how well it plays. One of the problems with linearity is that it can be pulled off effectively (as we've seen with Cold Storage), but it will likely only work with one or two gametypes and then fall apart elsewhere. Shishka says objective gametypes work on the map and I'll give him the benefit of the doubt, but just like Cold Storage, I see the map primarily being a Slayer ordeal.

Assembly and what little we've seen of Sandbox's gargantuan potential, on the other hand, are both poised for impact on all fronts. I can’t wait to give these suckers a ride.

Fall '09. It won't see this officially on any of the older models though, from what I've been told. Only on new devices.

Looks like some kind of pit that he didn't realize was there.

Haha. From the windows, can you see Earth? Luna? Human starships?

Just curious: For those HaloGAFers who have recon, what is your matchmaking experience like? Seeing the extent of some people's obsession for recon (going to such lengths as sending 100's of PMs or hacking accounts), are matches filled with "can i haz recon? do you work for bungle?" or are people ignorant or apathetic about the whole deal?

This might be of interest to you...

You can see Ecuador from some of them, and some tiny specs that are PROBABLY ships (given how they're moving) from others.

The text on the monitors is pretty funny - it's the Lorem Ipsum text. :)

It's going to be fun just dropping down that hole :lol

I still have a lot of content to read and watch, but everything looks fantastic. <3 Bungie.

some help here too
I don't really care, but I'm a 42 or a 43 which is pretty close to a 45, so having some help would be nice.

The Mythic Map Pack is shaping up quite nicely with Assembly being a good slayer map, Orbital looks to be quite the confusion and perhaps a decent objective map. Sandbox, being the "ultimate" forge map. I'm very interested to learn what is in store for the other three, but that's too soon.

I'm looking forward to obtain them, whether it be Halo Wars CE or Xbox Live Marketplace (I haven't really decided yet, my decisions on gaming don't really stick). I plan to buy them myself, unless another 'special' alternative opens up like with the Heroic Map Pack.

You ever been to the bottom of Gemini? There's like a 10-15 second drop there to the bottom of the map. Once you get there, it's a massive open space that stretches for miles and miles in every direction. And there are three huge "appendages" hanging from the ceiling.

When I first read about the Crypt, that's the first thing I thought of. The drop, not the appendages.

Orbital looks seriously slick, and Assembly's design seems perfect for just about anything. Once you add on the sheer scope of what Sandbox is poised to bring to the game, the $10 price point really puts most other map packs to shame.

So can someone who has the maps verify if you can actually hold the golf club? In that screenshot on TTL, it looks like he is holding the club. It's not in forge mode since there is no blue-grid and he has secondary colors. Strange.

[edit] Nevermind, IGN says it's a skinned version of the hammer :lol Awesome.

I've heard from a reliable source that the golf club is indeed a reskinned hammer. You can also hear them talking about it briefly in the Assembly GV video.

One of the best things about Gemini. I used to love doing that glitch. Won't be able to include it in the remake, sadly. :p

You're roughly 300 pages late, bra

Yeah, I figured. When I usually play H3, I normally play Swat but I decided to give TS a whirl. I couldn't break the habit of tossing the AR down everytime I went for a BR.

I've sorta ranted about this before, but I just simply cannot play this game anymore in a ranked setting, even with friends. I'm a 38 (?) in Team Slayer; however the similarly ranked players it matches me against are consistently kicking my ass, but the game seemingly refuses to acknowledge this by dropping my rank. We just played 7 games in Team Slayer (myself and a friend who was a 40, and a friend who is a 39); we won 2 of them, and we only won those two because everybody quit on one and everybody but one guy quit on the 2nd game. Except for the game where everybody quit, I went negative every game, usually in large numbers (-7, -10, etc), clearly dragging my team down, and clearly indicating that I should NOT be getting matched against people of this level. However the whole time my rank does not drop, the only thing that changed was my friend dropped from a 41 to a 40. This is my consistent experience with ranked matchmaking in any playlist; I continue to get pummeled over and over, very rarely winning and usually going negative, but the game refuses to drop my rank, so I continue to get owned over and over. I've been trying to get back into Halo recently and I have a lot of fun playing Social Skirmish/Big Team, but I just can't play ranked games of any time, and it's extremely frustrating.

Am I the only person who has this problem? It's just not fun getting teabagged on 9 games out of 10, and I don't even like playing ranked anymore because I just feel like crap for dragging my team down (half of the games or more we lost we clearly lost because of me).

I remember I used to be a 42 in Team Slayer. Then something happened, probably within the first half of last year, and my rank slowly started to drop. I think I stopped trying to the point where I was never really playing competitively. I think I'm between 30 and 33 now.

I remember around the Heroic DLC launch, my Ranked K/D spread was 1.5 or 1.6...now it's a 1.1.

I'm a 40 or 41 in Double Team because I actually try in that most of the time because I always play with a friend.
