Sketch over at HBO just said that the embargo goes up tomorrow, so we'll get more info then.

You nubs are in for a surprise if you think Bungie builds their maps by having a grid and then placing items on top of it. And that at the time of that video we saw, the two "set pieces" were all that they had. That's not how they create maps.

Structure in blue grid looks similar to those found in the picture.

Sandbox? (take with a grain of salt as I found it from Bnet members who found it from here: http://xboxblog.at/blog/neue-halo-3-multiplayer-maps/)

That looks like it is it. Really nice find, Domino.
I love the lighting on the map.

I wasn't aware of any embargo... it's not listed at the site I got it from.

[edit] nothing to see here.

TDG: Not sure what isn't exciting about the map. But some of the excitement needs to be tempered against how the map is integrated into matchmaking.
Well, the setting looks pretty generic, and that layout for the map looks fairly awful. All excitement is coming from ridiculous speculation that's not really based in anything. And if this is indeed a forge-centric map, then we can expect the same things from it that we got from Foundry: not much. Forge is clunky and it's hard to do much with it except alter the current map, we're not going to see many good Sandbox maps, and the ones that we do will have to be played in customs.

At this point, I just want quality maps quickly integrated into MM, not more forge-centric maps.

I'm surprised nobody said anything about this yet. Those red and blue orbs over the bases are not active camo/overshields. They appear to be indicators of the red and blue bases. While I'm not sure if the balls are just visible in forge or not, they do give off a glow on the bases :) [ex: Red glow on base]

[edit] Guess I was late. Me and my poor young eyes. :lol

I noticed that too.

In my opinion, it's better than I expected, or as good as I dared hope. They made large building blocks which can be fit together to make interesting structures - better "blocks" than are available in Foundry.

I had realistic expectations though.

The glowing orbs is a nice way to address a problem found in Foundry that when you spawn, all the textures/environment look the same so its very easy to get confused as to which side you're on or which base you're looking at. The creative forge heads came up with the nice way of embedding power ups in the walls but these colored orbs are a much nicer answer.

Looks like at least 1 thing has been addressed with Sandbox that was an issue with Foundry.

Dirtbag mentioned it. And yeah, they look really cool. That was good thinking on the designer's part.

I didn't really have any expectations, I just hoped that it's be a good map. I've seen no indication that it will be a good map, and based on what's happened with Foundry I see no reason to be excited about its' forgeability.

When Sandbox was first announced, I was hoping it would be a big sandy box to fill with large-scale Forge objects. The community has been asking for an outdoors Forge map since Halo 3 shipped.

Anyhoo. I lovelovelove the lighting/look of the map. And I'm not prejudging the matchmaking integration. Bungie has done better with each round of DLC. We'll see. If there's only one variant of this in MM, I'll be disappointed.

Added this to the OP, FWIW.

Hmph. That looks way different than the Sandbox on Shishka's screen.

I'm going to quote this one more time and put the ball back on Shiska's court regarding a comment he had made before about Foundry's layout. Something along the lines of him wishing he had more time to come up with a good example to show forgers about weapon placement and creating a well balanced map to show as an example.

*crosses fingers that Shiska got the time he needed this time with Sandbox*

Yes, it does. There are several hundred of them.

It took me a little while to figure out what you were talking about. I understand now. :lol

So, if this is indeed the Sandbox we are getting, I wonder what sort of classic maps can be recreated now...

Sanctuary should be possible. :)

I'm surprised that you don't use HBO. Would have figured you as a frequent on that site.
I first heard about HBO in the extra disc that came with the Halo 3 Legendary Edition. It was the one video that had Jen Taylor go around and meet the fans. One of her first stops was to this old guy's house ( remember him having a lot of gray hair), and how he had a website named Halo.Bungie.org.

I'm surprised I don't use it more myself, actually. Never really had a need to, I guess. I should set aside some time to actually browse through the website because it does seem like a good website.

Does anyone notice these little lights around the structure in the Sandbox picture? They look like the warning lamps to mark the perimeter around Sandtrap because there are mines past the perimeter. I thought it could be something else, but I doubt it.

Seriously, though, mind blown at you not knowing a lot about/frequenting HBO.

The community has been asking for it, but I don't think that the game needs a big forgeable map right now. Besides, I think that in recent months as MM has grown more stale and it has become more clear how janky forge is, the community has moved from demanding big foreable maps, to just damnding maps.

I also find the setting to be fairly boring. The dark, rusty look doesn't do anything for me, and we already have a map that looks almost exactly the same. And obviously Bungie could do a better job of integrating Sandbox variants into MM than they have with Foundry... but a lot of things could happen. MS could send me money. I could post naked pics of myself. But none of those are worth getting excited about at this point since we haven't gotten any indication that they're going to happen.

Plus, we're not going to be playing Sandbox or its' variants in any playlist outside of the special DLC playlists for several months.

I suppose I'm looking like the angry town pessimist right now, but looking at what people are expecting from Sandbox, I suspect that the next year or so will be filled with a lot of disappointed posts about the wasted potential of Sandbox.

One thing's for sure: the rest of us are way more excited about Sandbox than you posting naked pictures of yourself.

(Just having grey hair doesn't make me old - I started going grey when I was 17. And it wasn't my house, although there's no way you could have known that from the video.)

I would also like to throw out that I still don't know how to sign up for your forums after years of checking out the site occasionally.

Someone please tell me how I do this.

Yes, same as Sandtrap.

I'm curious to how much building blocks we'll be set with. I hope a shit-ton.

Haha, I had the same problem too. I think I ended up figuring it out, but I don't use the forums there much so I don't remember my name and password anymore. I never really liked the layout of their forums much. They kind of confuse me. :(

I didn't realize...that level geometry is actually building blocks, as they aren't casting lightmap shadows.

Sweeeeeet. I think it's legit.
Holy shit I hadn't noticed that. Thanks for noticing. :lol

TDG,

I need you too look at my avatar.
I need you to admire its cuteness.
I then need you to smile because of the cuteness.
After that, post about it.

I'll definitely be using it when I go through Halo CE again. My birthday is coming up soon (Feb. 10th), so maybe I can convince my friend to play the campaign with me and we'll do the glitches together. Before Wu posted those links, I didn't even know HBO had glitches listed.

SLIGHT confession: Before I knew "HBO" stood for "Halo.Bungie.Org," every time someone just said "HBO" in this thread (before I joined up here, so still lurking), I thought they meant the HBO that produces TV shows. I couldn't understand the relation, and then it dawned on me.

Edit:

Excuse me, but I learned that early on that if you have gray hair, you are old; even if you are 17. Please don't shatter my illusion of reality.

And that wasn't your house? Whose was it then?

Now I want to know more about it, the environment looks amazing, and I wonder what the new forge objects will be.

Well time to go get Halo Wars CE. :D

that last part should get someone riled up
