Good question as to why they didn't. I'm expecting some backtracking in regards to a certain map pack going free despite statements to the otherwise.

I think they have finally made some plans regarding it, actually. =)

I said it months ago and I stick by it: Legendary will be free by the time Mythic hits XBLMP.

Jeez, im trying to play this game with a friend so I go to rent it...no blockbuster has it, no used copies either. Neither did EB. What the hell?

Bungie would have to dial down the HDR if they wanted to up the anti-aliasing. I'm a HUGE fan of the lighting in Halo 3 (I don't think it's been matched) but I wouldn't mind seeing some tamer HDR trickery for some increased AA.

BTW I'm a big fan of G.A.M.E. It's been a part of my Wipeout HD custom tracks for quite some time now.

Doesn't look very blue griddy. Voc suggested that maybe those orbs you see floating control the landscape and skybox. Much like filters.

Maybe if you delete all blocks/sets of geometry, underneat it all will lie a blue grid?

And delete the landscape. You got it.

You can easily see how all of those items are "placeable." And that this setup has been constructed from lots of pieces.

Nice find. Nothing about the screen and what it portrays seems too out of the ordinary or unbelievable. It's built on a flat plane which I had a feeling it would be due to forge's limitations. Would've liked to have seen some neat trickery to create hills and such but it's understandable. The scale seems about right (a tad smaller than Valhalla) but I'm still hoping there are more conventient ways of scaling the size.

You can see some of the forge objects look like parts taken from Sandtrap including a half bunker in front of the hog on the bottom right. Seems like the bases have interiors which is nice. There seems to be a healthy variety of forge objects but I really hope they went all out (I hate how many objects are locked out of random maps).

I hope this is the default (or one of the defaults) because:

I refuse to get exicited about that pic. It seems to be what I predicted it would be, and that could indeed make me excited. But I've been burned so many times by you, Internet.

Cocop: then it would be a joygasm. But I still don't think the blue grid will present.

Yeah, just a guess. I think the easiest way to change certain broad-scale elements of a Halo 3 map would be by adding or removing orbs -- as displayed with filters. If the blue grid is any indication of what we get when we remove all elements, I imagine there will be either other individual options or a series of options to create a variety of landscapes/skyboxes. Which begs the question if we're going to be using a desert theme throughout or if there are other alternative themes -- can't wait to find out.

That said, I think this map looks really cool as it is. Even if the skybox and basic environment remains. I agree with the sentiment that the design schematic has less of a complex, and crowded Halo 3 feel and more of a Halo 2 vibe -- the straight edges, the precise symmetry, the simplistic geometry and the excellent use of line of sight. It has win written all over this image and I can't imagine what other surprises might be involved here.

This is all brilliant stuff that I can't wait to get my hands on. Well done, Bungie.

Agree 100%. By far the most promising map out of all the DLC so far.

And now Bungie unveils Sandtrap at night and everyone jumps off a bridge.

Yeah, I was doubtful about the prospects of Bungie releasing a "blue grid" map to begin with but the more I think about it the more unlikely it seems.

Judging by this pic the flooring is not a bunch of building blocks (although those lines in the ground can be initially deceiving) and the sand looks meticulously integrated into the flooring (which makes me doubt that the boundaries are even scalable).
 
My gut says, no orb based sky boxes or landscapes.
The only other landscape I could see really working would be snow, given the way it can cover and reveal things underneath it like the ground objects. Grass just doesn't seem as likely to me. Wish the map had a very small body of water (outside of the play-area) somewhere for variety outside of Sandtrap.

Random other thought as I run off to a meeting: the file name fits in with the format Bungie has used on their other environmental shots of the other two Mythic maps. Not identical, but close. If it's a fake, it's a very detailed fake.

Watch it be another fake.
 
It's real. I just received the Press Kit for it. Weird, it's titled under Halo 3: ODST. I'll post a Hi-Res Screen up in a sec. (It's a huge 15.3 MB TIFF, I'll shrink it down in Photoshop)
