You nubs are in for a surprise if you think Bungie builds their maps by having a grid and then placing items on top of it. And that at the time of that video we saw, the two "set pieces" were all that they had. That's not how they create maps.

This apparent leak was bound to happen. I wonder if it will affect the timing of the official map reveal. It's already spoiled it.

Multiple skyboxes, added rivers and complete surface retexturing ala light filters?

C'mon, the misconceptions seem to be already pouring out.

Jesus guys, I said it WOULD have been nice if they would have put a little river or something on the map so it wouldnt feel so similar to sandtrap... Not that I think it's a forge-able option.

Who here said that's how they build maps, lol?

AI bots, Horde mode, campaign editor, Haylo 4 bye Bunglie

It's real. I just received the Press Kit for it. Weird, it's titled under Halo 3: ODST. I'll post a Hi-Res Screen up in a sec. (It's a huge 15.3 MB TIFF, I'll shrink it down in Photoshop)

FFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFf

So what do the anti-blue grid folks think? That Bungie wasn't done with the map, so they created an entirely new map with a blue grid and completely-textured pieces of geometry to film a video in?

:lol :lol

I remember glancing at the Bnet junkies spewing that shit out for weeks on end.

I'd love for a Far Cry 2 editor but with Halo, ain't going to happen, got to be realistic.

The possibilities in the pic alone suggest a vast improvement and some great learning from Foundry, will be interesting to see how far that experience extends.

He's implying that it seems like the map in the screenshot contains forge objects that were in the blue grid video and that Bungie doesn't normally make maps from a blue grid. Therefor since this map started as a weird blue grid than the user must be able to start building their sandbox map from a blue grid.

He has a good point and has renewed that spark in my doubt-filled mind.

I hate Cocopjojo.

Where can I get me one of these? I want 15.3 MB of Sandboxage!

Lolwat? I don't recall anyone saying something like that about Sandbox or Bungie's maps in general.

All I did was post a video showing that the specific area they did the second film in is familiar to a similar area in the picture of Sandbox I posted earlier.

Edit: Thanks, Eazy. Makes sense. :P

The blue grid could have been a quickly made box level. It wouldn't take much effort to create such a level at all, place it in the engine and import some other assets.

However, I do see your point, but as usual, we have nothing but blind speculation and guesses, and now, one nice picture.

How did I miss this post? You deserve a hug.

Bungie has modified maps before in those videos.

The Edge award video had the extra players added in to represent the staff.

The video we're talking about had the Campaign characters on Rat's Nest as a "back lot".

In the Blue Grid shot Luke says "there is NO way we're showing this yet" (roughly). I think the joke was, the map was so early it was just a grid and a few bits of geometry, thus it was too early to show.

We knew not to read anything into the extra players in the Edge vid. We got burned reading into the Rat's Nest segment. I don't think we should read much into the Blue Grid.

I wasn't specifically responding to you, anyway. Mainly to some other h8ters who shall remain unnamed... Ghal and dirtbag.

This does seem like a possibility. But I still stand by my blue-griddedness.

I thought press kits had gone out? Kibbles, where are you!

He must have found the embargo date/time stamp included in the kit. The one fringe site leaking a shot just screams "we broke the embargo".

Cocopjojo said:
Doesn't look very blue griddy. Voc suggested that maybe those orbs you see floating control the landscape and skybox. Much like filters.

Everyone's living in a dream world.

World geometry uses baked lightmaps. We haven't seen any examples of fully dynamically lit world geometry (terrain and non forge geometry) yet in Halo 3, we're not going to see it now.

There's also no way that they added a full terrain editor into Forge in the last title update.

The reason why Foundry and Sandtrap are in dark lighting conditions is because Forge objects don't cast shadows, and when you have large objects such as structures that don't cast shadows it looks horrible in a fully lit environment.

I don't think you'll be seeing different skybox options because of the lighting problems.

Oh, for sure. I was just hoping that they broke it by, like, ten minutes. Haha.

Quoted for new page, because I think Falagard's the only one of us that knows a lot about this stuff.

But I still Believe.

Kibbles, is there any text in the press kit that describes it better than that translated sentence that we had? Or is it still embargoed?

Too early? The maps were supposed to be out by Fall/Winter of 2008, which isn't too far from when those acceptance videos were posted.

I'm guessing if you remove everything (or what you're allowed to remove, anyway) from Sandbox, that underneath it all lies a blue grid where you can start "from scratch" per se.

wonder if that is the default MM layout of Sandbox, doesn't seem to have any weapons place on it. Would be kind of neat if they launched more then 1 variant into matchmaking right from the start.

refuse to believe it's not a fake
do not want to get over-hyped
but if it was real its looks like a sanctuary remake is in the works

Ha, the Chopper is legit, huh? :P

Looks fucking great. Reminds me of Halo 2's Hang'em High (Tombstone).

Edit: Floating blue orb on one side, orange on the other. Cool beans.

I don't

I thought that up until the release of this screenshot, but now I think its pretty clear what to expect.

What are those orange-bordered black squares we can see on a couple objects at blue base? Holes or windows? The one on the top seems like an odd place for a window, but the one on the side seems like an odd place for a hole.

The supposed-Sandbox picture looks quite nice. Hopefully we are given tons of pieces to build anything, similar to how Foundry was lent to us.

And I, and I'm sure tons others here, hope Sandbox is used to its peak potential rather than being seldom used like Foundry was...

Yeah, I was wondering about those. Maybe they are just there for aesthetics? To keep it from just being a plain stone wall.

They do go along with the orange pinstripe thing the blocks are sporting, but they definitely seem to have more of a purpose. I'm going with windows!

Nice!
I really dig the blue/red lighting. It's not exactly realtime dynamic lighting but it could be used, much like the filters to create changes in general brightness.

Still don't extremely skeptical about how one could start at the blue grid and get to something like the thing in the picture. The sand definitely looks far from a forge object and I don't seen what forge would do with holes in the texture. I'd hope that holes would just be infinite abysses so people could create things like ascension but it seems beyond the capabilities of forge.

also, I hope they have giant walls you can place to seal out the outside border (or where-ever) so that you don't waste a giant forge budget trying to create impossibly big walls built of smaller pieces.

In my "dreamworld," I see you just clicking X and then selecting your landscape. And it just pops into view. Or takes a second to load, and then appears. Each landscape probably has its own skybox.

Hmph. That looks way different than the Sandbox on Shishka's screen.
That's the beauty of forge, Luke, you can make it look however you want!

Multiple variants upon launch confirmed.

More Choppahs?
I hope they increase the chopper limit. 4 is simply not enough for the kind of Sandbox maps I have in mind.

These screens and ODST box art (same) are dated "Jan.27.08" ... apparently Microsoft didn't catch on to the whole new year thing. :lol

No text yet either sorry guys. Maybe the pics weren't supposed to be released yet? :lol

Louis Wu said:
I'm pretty sure that's EXACTLY what most of us wanted to hear. :D :D
Yup.

Especially if Shishka's version has a blue grid in it. :p

TDG: Not sure what isn't exciting about the map. But some of the excitement needs to be tempered against how the map is integrated into matchmaking.

For those who need to inspect every detail, here's an even larger version. Not sure if you'll be able to make anything more out of the picture, but here it is anyway.

[edit] Fuck, tinypic downsized it... any other image hosts?
