I just hope we all learned a lesson from this.

Fool me once...
I just hope MS took notes as well, and maybe takes a little advice from you guys in regards to your fans next time. Now I'm apprehensive about general countdowns. :lol

The second countdown was meant to poke fun at ourselves and the situation. Maybe we should've been more overt.

So I've arrived pretty solidly at rank 44 in Team Slayer now. Too bad that it seems it will take quite a few more games to reach 45. I just lost a game on Boundless by quite a few points. I was MVP with +4, one of my team mates quit, and one of my team mates had -15. :(

Oh the second one didn't bother me at all, as it actually counted down to something.

There should also be a "quit out and fuck your team over" button.

I don't think I've ever had "n00bs" intentionally quit out when we're losing (after all, who's gonna be the last kill for the other team? :lol) It's always the Generals that can't bear the loss and peace out.

Though I must admit, I'm somewhat letdown by the hype vs. reality on the Recon reveal, and that has much more to do with how MS handled it all. With the stalled-out reveal and the MS by-line 'that a game like this deserves its own reveal event', I naturally assumed this was a much larger project/undertaking then it actually was. While I still can't wait to play Recon, I was definitely hoping for something with a bigger departure from Halo 3 (certainly not an expansion) and hopefully something in the halo-verse with its' own new multiplayer component. And yes the bogus Gamespot rumor about a squad based cover-shooter played into my disappointment as well.
I've had the opposite reaction. There's only one thing that could've made me happier than revealing that the Recon project has only been in the works for a couple months and is planned to be smaller than a retail game; and that's the reveal of a new IP.

This means that more effort has been going into their two new games, set in a brand new worlds, and not tied to MS's chain. Nothing could feel fresher.

Agreed.

I'm still playing Halo 3 on a regular basis. Switching from Squad battle, TS and MLG. I'm still choked about not having new maps for the fall. Other online shooters just don't do it for me. I got the new SOCOM but that doesn't work. It's like trying to insert your disc in up-side-down. Poop everywhere. Maybe Resistance 2 will do better.

NHL09 is still getting my love. It's alot of fun online with friends. I'm waiting for used copies of Fable 2 and GOW2. Fallout 3 is out next week, then LBP.

Community Spotlight: NeoGAF
Posted by urk at 10/22/2008 10:18 AM PDT

Hidden deep with the dark, terrifying recesses of the Introwebnet lays a dystopian refuge for gaming junkies: NeoGAF, a not-so secret society where living inside the compound walls comes with a stern warning: they eat their young. But within that teeming mass of digital humanity lives a strong and prosperous Halo-inspired community. They consume every morsel of news, craft near-religious exegeses about the plot twists and turns taken in our titles, and occasionally they get spun up when an outsider enters their domain to take a shot at their beloved benefactor.

But just as often the shots come from within. The grassy knolls at NeoGAF are plentiful, and though these folks love our games, they offer no quarter for any perceived missteps. Observe a dramatic interpretation offered by one NeoGAF member, Domino Theory:

Jack: I think the AR is the best for both offensive and defensive maneuvers within Halo 3.

Bob: No, the BR allows for extensive defense while still maintaining the 30 seconds of fun that Halo is known to give to the player.

Jack: Nuh uh, the AR allows for variety within Halo's game play architecture, pleasing the player with every step he or she takes.

Bob: Your opinion doesn't matter. The BR is better!

Jack: Neither does yours. The AR is better!

Bob: NO

Jack: YES

Bob: Wanna play some Team Slayer?

Jack: Sure, gimme 5 minutes.

Thankfully, the staff at NeoGAF – typically a fast-acting, no nonsense brand of online gunslingers – allows this type of back and forth to occur with only the occasional warning as long as it stays in the gargantuan monstrosity that is the Official Halo 3 Thread. Frankly, we’re sickened by this display and we’ve taken the liberty of giving Bob and Jack a one way ride to the never lonely Isle of Banadu. Enjoy your stay fellas.

Some of the group’s favorite maps: The Pit, High Ground, Ghost Town, Avalanche, Standoff, Cold Storage, Rat's Nest, Arabella (a custom Foundry variant), MLG-inspired variants to existing maps, Valhalla, and Smallhala.

Some of the group’s favorite game types: Team BRs, Multi-Flag BRs, One Flag CTF, One Bomb, Neutral Assault, MLG Team Slayer, MLG CTF, and Territories.

It should be noted that due to the size and scope of the Halo community at NeoGAF, these favorites are representative of a small cross-section of preferences. Like our own forums, the full experience is impossible to distill into a few brief words. No one can be told what the NeoGAF is.

For the next two weeks, this rag-tag group of e-pimps will take ownership of Bungie Favorites.

ROFL, give Urk the reigns at Bungie and look what happens. Friggin NeoGaf spotlight. That's like giving a man a flashlight in a red light district and he decides to point it at a steaming pile of dog shit.

Holy.... :lol

It's almost like Bungie hides Easter eggs in matchmaking. "We'll let you do something totally impossible and it's your job to use theater mode to find out how you did it"

GAF exposed yet again on BNet yet the influx of kids coming in here begging for Recon remains nil... The reject button on the new members seams to be working quite well. :lol

Oh, b.net kids...lol.

Sweet to see Urkel doing the updating, must be why it took so long for us to get on favorityes when Luke asked us way back when.

Oh, and Domino, I knew what your Wednesday meant. :)

edit: lol also at Luke telling kids to join up.

Oh, I have something very slightly worthwhile to contribute this time.

I was watching some old Halo 2 MLG tournament gameplay yesterday evening, after someone recommended Legit's ridiculous performance in Lockout Oddball (game 3, starts at 20 minutes in). As someone who's played way more Halo 3 than Halo 2, a few things jumped out.

There were some really, really bad spawns. You can't tell that easily from a single POV, compared to a full saved film, but there were a number of times where the player spawned right on top of the other team, behind another player, or into the middle of a battle. Not much real data to go on, but it's worth pointing out that there were shitty spawns in H2 as well. Maybe you don't remember them because you couldn't save films.

Despite all the whining about the BR spread in Halo 3, it looks like it doesn't actually make a difference at high level of play. The BR looks just as consistent in MLG H3 gameplay as it does in H2 gameplay. A lot of bitching and whining about nothing.

The sword was stupid. How anyone can complain about the shotgun or mauler being overpowered in Halo 3 is beyond me, when compared to the infinite ammo, instant-draw sword.

And Lockout seems to be so much better than Blackout. Apart from being way nicer to look at, I don't understand why the design of snipe tower was changed so much. Especially the jump from elbow to S2, and the sight-line all the way from BR1 to snipe ramp. Also the pillar at elbow corner made elbow a worthwhile place to be positioned, rather than a deathtrap, and the ramps instead of stairs from green room made it possible to survive an attack from the lift.

I just don't get why these changes were made. Who made the design choices (ferrex?) and how did they justify them? Frankie made a post ages ago saying that Library window was closed because BR tower was too easy to lock down. That sort of response to feedback was good to hear. It would be rad to find out more about this stuff.

The spawns in H3 are much worse than in H2.

In H2 yes there were bad spawns but the way Midship and many maps evolved is a lot of the spawns were protected from the positions during a team using a setup for map dominance and control in MLG. This was in no way Bungies doing or intentions, just how the maps unfolded gameplay wise. This means a team could wait a second or two and wait til their entire team was respawned then push out. In H3 the spawns tend to be too out in the open and especially right in place of the way a team sets up, think Narrows pockets looking over with sniper at back base spawns. Also think Pit if they didnt spawn base side when you are grabbing the flag go look down towards sniper side and push them that way while you take flag long hall, its just the most common setup to use because its the easiest.

A fix for this is to create line of sites the enemy has that are like cones in the spawn system, do not spawn the enemies in the cone. I'm sure we've all gotten sniped before and RIGHT before we got sniped your teammate has spawned behind you giving the sniper a double kill. Its happened to me many times. The cones of vision would prevent this because no spawn would be allowed in the enemies cone. This would allow a fix for SOME spawnsticks the ones where a player tosses it in a predicted spawn spot and watches, it would not prevent the ones that a player throws a random nade really high in the air and gets a lucky stick.

Yes theater allows us to see this a lot better, if H2 had theater you'd also see bad spawns but you'd never see as many.

One major flaw in your BR argument is that you do realize when you watch pro replay that the games are LAN? The BR in H2 and H3 work by design. And yes you can predict how to shoot the BR in H3 just as well as H2, the problem is lag (XBL) DESTROYS the H3 BR much more so than the H2 BR.

Real talk.

the Urkstore has a huge amount of full shelf space for upcoming Favorites, he just wanted to sell you guys first. He's so street, he wants to represent his roots.

:D
It's good to see that we're finally up there. Thanks Urk for puttin the work in to make it happen. And doubly thanks for the Smalhalla shout out (don't think it made the favorites though). Again, thanks you Mr, Omlet for stepping up and organizing it.

Can't wait to see the reaction to Number's The Plateform
:lol

What, Two Boxes didn't make it in? No way.

And what's The Plateform?

Would've been cool to see my gametype up on Bungie Favorites, but it's awesome to finally see NeoGAF up there anyway. I think GAF Multi-Flag is the only one I've actually had the opportunity to play so far.

urk should work in a subtle GAF reference or meme every post.

NeoGAF does not like Rat's Nest.

At least the giant brown oval is more fun to play than the giant brown square (Foundry). I bet the giant brown pentagon in the new map pack is going to be mind-blowing.
