The Official Halo 3 Thread

Remember back in February when Gearbox Software big boss Randy Pitchford teased his studio's next project as something "big"? Well, not just "big" but something that was "even bigger" than anything Gearbox is currently working on? Well, the kids at OXM sure remembered and they sent their spies deep undercover into Gearbox territory and came back with one heck of a rumor for their October issue: Gearbox is working on Halo 4 as a launch title for the next Xbox (NextBox?).
see: "Halo: Forerunner."

Halo 4: DPR by Bungie or bust.

I feel like I am drinking it with my mind, is it possible to learn such power?

It's not Aliens, right at the bottom of that letter Pitchford says "Other Gearbox projects have openings too (including on the Borderlands and Aliens teams)."

Though I have doubts about it being Halo 4 either cause of the sentence that says "you’ll define a *lot* of the game’s look and feel"... Surely the Halo series already has a look and feel.

If you ever play with Team Daisy you will find the opposite problem of trying to get people to be quiet for two seconds.

But Live voice chat is a little wacky anyway. A poor quality conference call to strangers is always going to be a little uncomfortable.

I recently purchased the entire Halo trilogy, got the cat helmet edition for 50$, have played through both Halo 2 and 3 (the two games I hadn't played) and am re-playing the first game. Wasn't a huge fan of the second game but I loved the third.

Halo 3 is the first game in the series that I've played the multiplayer online, and outside of one brief LAN session with the first game, it's the first real bit of time I've spent with the multiplayer. I've mainly been diving in to this game whenever I get bored of CoD4. The learning curve is...horribly steep. It's always like that jumping into a multiplayer late in the game and/or series, Counter-Strike was the same, sort of. The thing is with CS, DoD or BF42 the maps weren't so fucking crazy, they were/are real-ish locales that were easy to get a grasp of. I've never been a fan of the Quake/Unreal Tournament style games where you run around and pick up guns, various power ups and have these crazy ass, multi-tiered levels with jump pads and what not so I don't know how much more time I'll invest in this game.

I guess could stick with the two maps Basic Training keeps putting me in but the game is sticking me with highly experienced assholes anyways I figured I'd try out some Social Slayer. So far I'm not digging the trial by fire.

Also the Halo community seems to consist of nothing but assholes.

^^ I'm in the same boat as you. Got into it this past week after some pretty heavy COD4 playing. I'm really liking the gameplay, everything's really solid and refined. It's a lot of fun when you're on and keeping up with everyone.. and not when you aren't. But that's expected.

Do you wanna add me? We could play together, get accustomed to the game together.

It takes a while to learn the weapons, maps and overall pace of the game; probably more time than a lot of other shooters. It's a complete blast when you get a little better and get well matched games though, so stick with it for a bit!

Yep, you guys might wanna check out http://halo.wikia.com/ (or any other Halo wiki). You'll be able to find multiplayer tips there, the advantages/disadvantages of weapons and equipment, map layouts, etc.

Well I trust latinoreview, everything they put up is mostly true, plus they got a CAD letter from Microsoft on all of this. It's just quick concept art, sometimes the concept art for movies is just complete shit. Also, it was just said that this was art depicting scenes from the script that the artist made himself, not sure if it's even official concept art made for the movie.

What the hell?

I don't even remember most of the scenes depicted in these pics. It just seems like a weird mishmash of scenarios from Fall of Reach and First Strike. The script can't be that close to Nylund's version.

The only piece of concept art that came straight out of the book was the one with the children on the training grounds.

On the topic of map discussion: I have braved the Bungie.net forums to bring you some news, from Shishka's fair hand.

[Squad Battle is] effective[ly] RBTB but 6v6, plus a couple smaller maps.
Interesting! Here are the maps currently in RBTB:
  • Last Resort
  • Sandtrap (and Covies and Heavy)
  • Valhalla (and Covies and Heavy)
  • Rat's Nest
  • Standoff (and Heavy)
  • Avalanche (and Heavy, but lol at 16 people buying the maps)
What would work well with 6v6 that isn't on this list? I have my doubts about all of them.

Blackout, Cold Storage, Construct, Epitaph, and Guardian are clearly too small. Although I have had Fun Times playing 6v6 CTF Classic on Epitaph when some fool gives me party leadership.

I think spawns would be a problem for The Pit and Narrows: the middle of both maps is big enough, but there isn't enough room at each base to allow 6 players to respawn safely.

Ghost Town is okay in DLC Objective, but one-sided objective games would need to be tweaked to make it feasible to score. The same goes for High Ground. I wouldn't mind slayer on either map.

I remember being utterly miserable playing 6v6 on Foundry when the Heroic maps were out. I can imagine a custom Foundry map working, but I don't think default will.

I think Isolation might work quite well, at least for Slayer or VIP. There are plenty of places for teams to respawn, and there's a lot of width to the map. Maybe some weapon tweaks would help: possibly remove or double the power weapons/vehicles?

Snowbound with shield doors would suck, but I think Boundless might actually be cool for 6v6, especially flag games.

As I said in the other thread, I really think that Bungie is going to develop Halo 4. Personally, I wouldn't be surprised if Gearbox is developing that new "gritty, tactical 3rd person Halo" in collaboration with Bungie. I personally think Bungie is going to continue to do Halo 3 stuff, and a new IP this gen, then kick off next-gen with Halo 4.

6v6 from my Dbl Exp Idea.

But seriously, find a couple of your friends to play with and it'll make the "experience" so much better.

Edit: Oh yeah, I also have a question for all you screenshot takers. How do you turn on the filters while taking pics?

you can only do it on the legendary maps and cold storage
you have to go into forge and the filters are under scenery

Are there any guys on here that play the MLG playlist fairly regularly? I'm around lvl 40 and I'm going in alone a fair bit when none of my friends are online. Problem is there seems to be a high % of quitters in the MLG list. I have a few Gaffers on my FL but a dozen or so more wouldn't hurt :D

GT same as GAF name and Im also on the GAF Halo 3 FL

Bungle is making a mistake by treating 6v6 as BTB Lite. I agree with your suggestions. But there needs to be a higher Objective weighting than is in BTB right now. It should be closer to 45 percent Objective and 55 percent Slayer.

Spawns could be a problem anywhere.

I am not sure Narrows would be ideal for 6v6. Not large enough.

Ghost Town may work with AR starts-Slayer and 1 CTF.

Ghost Town is okay in DLC Objective, but one-sided objective games would need to be tweaked to make it feasible to score. The same goes for High Ground. I wouldn't mind slayer on either map.
Read above on Ghost Town.

High Ground for 1 CTF would certainly work. More chaos would ensue. For Slayer, it's a touchy decision since base-team begins with a load of weapons to choose from while offense mainly gets the Ghost and Sniper Rifle.

I remember being utterly miserable playing 6v6 on Foundry when the Heroic maps were out. I can imagine a custom Foundry map working, but I don't think default will.
Good call.

But custom maps won't make it into 6v6 -- I think it's just dreaming right now.

Snowbound with shield doors would suck, but I think Boundless might actually be cool for 6v6, especially flag games.
I also think Boundless would work well. Slayer and Multi-Flag would be fun.

Halo 3 needs more maps like Relic, Terminal, etc. to make 6v6 as good as it was in Halo 2. Last Resort, Standoff, and Valhalla -- a nice trio of maps to begin with, but others aren't necessarily so flexible.

Yea B.net stats are updating very slow. In fact the games we played last nite just updated for me and I can't actually view them it just won't load.

Interesting though it said "Unfortunately the games..." error and it showed the gamertag #
Crusatyr - P90 who I've never played with. Instead of MY Gamertag. Wonder what the deal is with that.

I am so abysmal with the sniper :( And if my team isn't better than me, we're toast. I played a game last night and out of the 4 kills that I got in the first 5 minutes (0_o), I guess I can take satisfaction that my first 3 kills were back-to-back killjoys :lol

Somehow, I maneged to throw in an actual headshot, too.

I dont mean to single you out, and I'm not trying to pick a fight here, I know you play the game often.

But is there anything about halo 3 you like?

RBTB is currently 40% Slayer, although it seems like a lot more. I think it should be more like 20% slayer and 80% objective, really.

I would love for squad to be something like:

50% Flag (mixture of 1 flag and ctf)

25% Slayer (no team snipers at all)

25% Bomb (mixture of regular and neutral assault)

----------------

and nothing else.

basically 4th of July playlist.

I've had the rank 35 for months and months (since 2007), but I don't play Halo 3 that often, so it's taken me a looong time to get my XP up to 300. I got the final 10 XP in Rocket Race, of all gametypes. I looove RR, so I figured I better play it matchmade for XP while I can. I know there's a lot of d-bags in the playlist, but everyone (miraculously) played it legit, last night. I know you H3 regulars are probably burnt out on Rocket Race, but my only exposure to it was right when H3 launched when my friends still played, and the last few weeks, when I've been getting into it matchmade. There's few things more intense than four teams all playing RR seriously.

So, now I have a tough decision to make - do I try and push Lone Wolves up to 40, or just say fuck it and be happy with Commander?

1) I got the 35 shortly after H3 launched - I was playing the game nightly and was better at it than I am now.
2) I don't even really like Lone Wolves. It's what my high rank is in because my group of RL buds I played with were worse at the game than me.
3) I've been playing Social more or less exclusively for a long time now, since I wasn't trying to play "competitively" - was just playing more to unwind and inch my way up to 300. Not sure I'm ready to hop back into ranked hoppers.

But the flipside is that the 35 wasn't really too tough. I steadily ranked up until I hit it. It's not like I struggled to get there. Maybe I'd have no problem hitting 40, and then could ignore LW for another 6 months...

EDIT: Side Note - Last night I also surpassed my Halo 2 games played. 615 in Halo 2, 622 in Halo 3. I hit like ~400 Halo 3 games played in the first month it was out, and was like "Wow, I'm gonna play H3 10x what I played H2" - but then I cooled off on it pretty significantly.

I'm serious though! There's definitely a different feel between the two. I played on my HDTV at home all summer, and then I'm back playing on my shitty TV at school and it feels quite different.

I've been out of the loop for a bit so can someone verify that, as far as we know, the only changes we're getting to Halo 3 multiplayer is the new experience system (medals per playlist), some updates to existing maps (Snowbound without shield doors, etc. given a new name) and that's it?

Are will still expecting other big things to occur to Halo 3 multiplayer this September or is that it?

Visual memory maybe? When you are used to seeing a game in one way then you change it, the difference in feel makes people uneasy.

I don't have an HD but my new TV does have S-Video slots so I use those Green/Blue/Red component inputs. It gives such a crisper picture than the traditional AV Yellow Video. It seems different and maybe slower refresh rate. Probably all in my head.

Its probably all in your head, but hey the mind is a strange thing so for you it might be harder.

Some people will argue the refresh rate of TV's but I never believed how that could make a difference.

Three things have been confirmed in AU2 so far:

1) Playlist specific rankings based on XP
2) Shield door-less versions of Epitaph and Snowbound, Elephant-less version of Sandtrap
3) Changes to Blackout spawns (per Luke in this thread)

I have a feeling there's more to the update than we know. In particular, I'm wondering if the changes to the Blackout spawns means spawning in general is going to see larger changes.

Trasher said:

It technically can be. I know you guys clowned on Max about that, but playing anything on 720p and beyond can always add a few fractions of a second of input lag as the signal now has additional processing going on, both provided by your xbox and your set.

Don't take my word for it though, set your 360 to 480i and play a quick round of halo. You might notice the controls are a tad less floaty. There are plenty of t.v.'s with additional image processing that I'd imagine many of you wouldn't know how to turn off. Sometimes just setting a television to 'game mode' isnt enough. Noise reduction should always be set to off, along with anything with the word 'dynamic' in it.

Also, running a game in full screen 480i mode will feel much different than a widescreen 720p mode.

So since you don't play on an HD set, don't comment. Refresh rate can make a huge difference.

Join me in happiness with Commander status. Let ranking up happen naturally, don't try grinding it. Lessen the amount of anger in the world one fun social game at a time.

There is definitely more there. But a lot of it, like I've said previously, is under-the-hood changes that don't make for sexy paragraphs in the Weekly Update. And, for obvious reasons, there's just some stuff we don't talk about.

Yeah, I assumed there's a lot of stuff going on under the hood; IIRC that was the case in the first update as well. I was more wondering if there were more top-line tweaks that will be more visible to players, such as the items disclosed so far.

I still can't believe I'm going to be in Seattle the day after tomorrow for PAX. My mental image of cocop is about to be destroyed; for a year he's been that dude in his avatar.
