Time for a GhaleonEB-style story.

This one was a while ago, DLC slayer on Blackout.

Yeah, DNS are the same.

I just noticed that when I set the Live IP settings to Automatic, it captures an IP address and a Subnet mask, but the Gateway comes up as 0.0.0.0. I'm thinking that's where it's failing, but I don't know how to fix it. Thanks for the help, BTW. Appreciated.

Any chance you have a Linksys router? I've had 3 of them doing something like this. Basically, after a certain point in time, they just stop dishing out IP addresses over DHCP. Best way to fix this is to buy a new router, and make sure it's not a Linksys (I used to swear by them, but jeez, if this didn't become an annoying issue).

If you are putting in your IP info manually on the 360, the default gateway should be the same as your router IP address. On your PC, go to the command prompt. If you don't know how to do that in Vista, click on the Start/Vista button, click in search, type Run, and hit enter. That should bring up the Run box. In the Run box, type cmd and hit enter. This should take you to the command prompt.

At the command prompt, type ipconfig /all and hit enter. This should give you more info about your network connection on the PC then you ever wanted. One of the settings should be the default gateway (which, again, should be your router's IP address). Enter that address into the Gateway setting on your 360, and see if you get anywhere.

If you need some DNS servers other than your ISP to try, you can use OpenDNS's servers: 208.67.222.222 and 208.67.220.220 .

As Azar said, if you go the static IP address route with your 360, you'll need to setup port forwarding so you don't have problems in matchmaking and such.

To be honest, if you've been having this problem repeatedly and everything works fine when you plug your devices straight into your modem, it's most likely a flakey router that needs to be replaced.

Been on a Garbage kick for the past few months.

^^ Thanks for the tips. It's a D-Link, but I'm going to replace it. Sounds like the router stopped, well routing more than one device at a time.

Before you go and drop some money on a new router, I can help you. I can give you my number via PM if you want. Just let me know. I am pretty good with this stuff, and am the person all my friends go to for this kind of help.

Okay, so copying and taking inspiration from Easy...

I have created Tiny Avalanche (Alpha)

I just spent a couple of hours on it and have decided to take a break so I can constructively come back to it later. In the mean time I have uploaded it to my fileshare so you guys can check it out, test it, perhaps have fun. Not all the weapons are placed on the map, and not all of them the correct weapons (but similar) this it due to the fact that some of the items would be too powerful on such a small map.

In anycase, some ideas that I have, which may change depending on your guys' feedback are:

- Only have two Mongooses per base. The idea behind this is that this map is too small and too clutered for a Wraith. The Ghost in the original Avalanche was too week to really have any staying power in the games, so I have removed that. Warthogs, once again too clutered. So Mongooses were the only logical choice.

- I might not have any snipers in the final build. The map is rather small and having snipers could ruin it. I still may put them in, this is still very undecided.

- I had to make choices on how to design the bases. So I took a little liberty with those.

- Not all the man cannons are there, for instance the ones coming out of the bases. I have removed those because it would just be easier to jump down than to man cannon. I have also removed the top mancannon in the caves, once again it's just easier to jump down.

Keep all of those in mind while you play. Besides that criticize away. I really appreciate any feedback you can give me.

So without further delay...

Linksys has good hardware and totally shit firmware. The solution? dd-wrt. It took me a long time to get it configured properly, but now I have two of these that haven't crashed once in six months, set up with a Wireless Distribution System between them (something the default firmware doesn't even allow for) that lets my downstairs Xbox get online.

Okay, I was restraining myself from posting because the disgruntled gamer told us to do so, however how much i appreciate his test of nothinginessnessness I love checking out peoples maps and giving constructive critisim.

Anyway, I checked out yo map and heres what I think you can improve:
  • Spawns
As you can tell from reading this thread, spawns can pretty much kill a map. At the moment, your map is lacking spawns to a large degree. You just need more generally. The spawns you have for team games are not enough, and you have a few set to 'neutral' when they should allocated to a team. Spawn etiquette is this:
- Don't spawn people together in masses unless you have to
- Don't spawn someone facing towards the wall.
- Give them some cover.

  • Interlocking
I don't think most people on GAF will care, but if you were to post your map on forgehub as it currently is then they'd bitch like hell. Interlocking is basically the skill of actuall interlocking (shocK) items into each other by using resetting the rounds and some clever work with the spawn system. It's not hard to do, but it is a slow process and requires planning beforehand. Benefits of interlocking is:
- You can save a lot of space
- Make things look much much neater
- Make surfaces flatter.
- Allows you to achieve more ambiguous ideas.

If you don't want to interlock, then thats cool, but I'd suggest you'd tidy the map up as alot of it is uneven and space consuming.

  • Weapons
Your map feels pretty bare when it comes to weapons. And grenades (but not dont add too many as it encourages frag matches, especially in small maps). Add a few ARs, BRs and maybe a SMG for elite players. Anyway, for power weapons the general rule is: The more powerful, the longer the spawn time. You can also limit amount of ammo if it maps small. Spawn times should be taken into consideration for turrents as well.

For are the 3 big things you should look out for. There are a few little things. Not sure if the vehicles are really needed. The attackers side is abit smaller than the defenders side, and they're going to have problems getting their mongooses out without having to go up that big ramp. Your map is also lacking equipment, unless that is intentional.

Noted. I didn't change any of the spawn and deleted alot (to put items on.) I haven't gone back to add any spawns. I am planning on doing so, after I get some more feed back and I can face the map with a fresh look.

Duely noted. I thought it looked kind of messy as well, but it's my first draft, infact it's half brainstorming and half first draft. I don't know how many versions of this map I will make but with each one I will try to tidy it up and make it look better. That is until I get to the final version of the map. I found this critisim very useful. Will be working on it.

Yeah, I plan on fixing alot of that. I just put in some weapons that were some what native to the map so you guys could get a small feel for it. I noticed the quick respawns on my play through as well, so I'll be fixing that. I'll be adding snipers, some frag gernades, assaults, and a few more plasmas.

As for the equipment I already have the native bubble sheilds in their rightful places and I plan on adding invis.

Quick question should I get rid of all the Mongooses or at least keep one? They could possibly help in a CTF or King situation.

I'm not sure. I suppose they can't do any harm really. My only problem is the actually paths. On the attackers side, the ramp that hsa the mancannon on gives no space for the mongoose to pass by. I'd either move it to the side or make the general area wider so its easier for the mongoose to pass through.

One of my suspicions is that the interconnecting cave between the two bases will be used constantly and the outer area will be ignored. This can only be proved by some actual play testing, but genereally players pick the shortest route. You need to do something that will encourage the players to go the longer way around. Obivously you've got the laser, but the turrents may be a problem because the scope of the map is much much shorter.

Objective gametypes in Team Doubles is so fucking stupid. It also messes with the playlist because normally you would veto Slayer Epitaph but then you get Oddball Construct...:lol :lol

I've enjoyed them, probably because I've won most of the objective matches I've been given. They don't come up that often, and are a nice change of pace from constant slayer.

The only objective games I like playing are MLG or Big Team. If I ever have to play Assault on Valhalla with no Br's, I'll go nuts.

I really like the objective games in Team Doubles. I have no issue with variety in my Halo 3.

wat. It's not like you can't find BRs on Valhalla by yourself. Team Objective is pretty fun.

Well I just got two objectives in a row and the first one was Pit AR starts. Trust me you cannot have The Pit AR starts. Have you ever tried to AR two teammates when they have Sniper Rockets, Sniper BR and OS? It doesn't work. Remove 2 of the rockets so they get no reload. Remove either OS or Camo. Limit sniper rounds.

If you get a double kill its basically a flag cap...I don't like that.

O And fuck Epitaph.

I've played like 5 games of Team Objective since it came out. I just feel like there is a lot more fun stuff to do. Have you played any MLG objective games. Are they anything like that? Those are crazy fast and fun. No big maps, increased run speed, and BR starts.

MLG objective games are very bland, just like all other MLG gametypes.

Well, my new copy of H3 came in and keeping in line with the other Limited Editions, the tin was beat to shit and the discs were loose. Oh well, at least the game works.

QFT.

I actually haven't gotten multiflag doubles, but I want to check it out.

Pit AR doubles is generally ok, because of the BRs that spawn pretty close to the original spawns. I generally don't have a problem finding one. My biggest Pit frustrations come when the other team is damn good, and holds both of the snipers.

Dax01 said:

I disagree. MLG objective games can be extremely fun, esp multiflag Onslaught. The douchebags that populate the MLG playlist are not so fun :(.

I like Onslaught, it's a good map, but the more variety in weapons/grenades/etc, the more fun. And in this MLG fails.

Thats just so wrong. More shit equals more randomness and less fun. How can you have fun in Team Double on Epitaph? The map and weapon selection is terrible and shotgun is way overpowered.

Competitive, balanced gametypes with BR spawns is FUN. Especially CTF.

i agree and it forces you to work as a team more
then again i might like it because i am your partner

I don't think so.

I have good and bad games on Epitaph.

Duel-wielding is fun. So is using the spiker, plasma rifle, mauler, assault rifle, etc. Besides, BR starts is not as good as AR due to the level of decrease in the amount of times melee is used.

Three Golden Aspects of Halo:
Weapons
Grenades
Melee

AR fills all three perfectly.

So, am I the only one who took TDG's challenge? :p

Anyways, not much to talk about, just info about PAX for all that are going. And maybe more, but I don't have time to read right now.

I'm going to picket Bungie's PAX booth to protest the lack of stuff in recent updates in preperation for... lots of cool stuff at their PAX booth.

im creepin by the kirkland teen center on a tailspy offerin recon for handies
skip weasel, intern
:lol

And for those that wait desperately by their 360s, hoping that I hop online, I'll be out of town this weekend. So stay strong.

Well, joy.

I spent a few more hour troubleshooting my router, then gave in and bought a new one. Installed it.

PC is online just fine.

Xbox still won't go online (but will when my PC is turned off and I reboot everything).

No Live for me for the foreseeable future. Live is still failing the IP test when set to automatic, then passing it and failing the DNS test when I set the numbers manually.

$40 and six hours of troubleshooting down the tubes so far.

:(
