The Official Halo 3 Thread

I hearby challenge all of you to not post in this thread on Friday until the Bungie Weekly Update is up. This will be an enormous test in self-restraint, will likely make the update seem to come sooner, and will be a great sacrifice to the Bungie gods, who may reward our efforts with a meaty update.

I hope we can all pull together to do it.

We can do it!

Wait.

.......

shit

Edit: disappointmenton. You fail, Sai-Kun.

Though this isn't actually a disappointment. New stuff coming at the PAX booth. Crickets until then.

Halo nation + restraint = does not compute.

Okay , so I saw the Halo 3 action figures today at my local game store. Is it just me or do they look nothing like the pictures that were revealed online? They're actually really really bad. Anyone got a picture of their figure just to make sure I saw the correct one?

they're okay, they're just pretty small. pretty much display only. I wanted to try some stop motion stuff but the joints are sturdy enough

After so many weeks of famine, when do we get to the weeks of plenty?
They've already announced that new Halo 3 content will be at PAX. If I were a betting man, I'd say we'll see new content at PAX. :p

Anything sooner is bonus.

So not next week, but the week after.

I was going for a biblical metaphor. You know, "I'm sick of this manna, and will construct golden flight elites until you guys bring down The Law from on high to set us straight."

Food is probably more relatable.

There's no way that's happening, but like Ghal said, I don't think there'll be anything that amazing tomorrow. There will most likely be no news on the multiplayer content as that's already going to be releaved at PAX. But they could tell us a little more about AU2, though I wouldn't be surprised if they only gave us a quick tease and save that for PAX as well.

This is my challenge to Bungie. Do not tease us fans anytime before the PAX info is out.
I believe this challenge is just as unlikely, if not more unlikely, as TDG's :P

That Flight helmet must really constrict brain flow. Either that, or it's a Freudian slip.

edit: As for the challenges...while I'd be happy to see something interesting tomorrow, I can't say I'll be too disappointed with nothing big.

I tend to not be a picky eater. :)

Anyone know anything about networking?

I was having really sluggish network performance yesterday, getting lots of disconnects. Tonight the PC was going sluggish as hell, so I went ahead and rebooted the modem, router and computer.

I hesitated to do that, because every time I do it takes me an average of 2-3 hours to figure out how to get back online.

That's what's happening now.

I initially rebooted first the modem, then the router, then finally the PC. Can't get online.

So turn everything off and turn on the router first, then the modem. Finally, PC. No luck.

I hit the reset button the modem, then reboot the router, and my PC goes online.

But my 360's won't connect to Live - says there's no IP available.

I reboot again, this time turning the 360 on first. I log into Live. Then I turn the PC on, and it won't connect.

I reboot again, this time turning the PC on first, now I can't connect to Live again.

I'm going on two and a half hours, back and forth, and I can't have my PC and 360 connected at the same time. This has happned every time I have to reboot the network. I'm going insane.

Anyone know what I'm doing wrong?

Stop wasting your time and buy a new modem? :P

Make sure there isn't something wrong with the router first-- plug your computer/360 straight into the modem and check to see if both work.

It's had this problem since the day I bought it. But when it works, it works fine.

Both the 360 and computer work when connected directly to the modem. Right now I'm on the PC, with the modem connected to the router. But Live won't let me sign in.

The network port light on the port the 360 is plugged into is lit up on the router, just as it is for the PC. It turned on when I turned the 360 on, so it's recognizing the connection.

Do you people actually think I'm dumb enough to think that if we all stop posting, we'll get a good update? Please, I'm the most cynical person here.

What I actually wish to do is conduct an experiment to see if you dolts can stop posting for half a day. We'll get to see who the thread asshole "pranksters" are, who doesn't actually read the thread, and who thinks their complaints about spawns are anything anyone actually cares about reading.

Ghaleon try inputting your IP and DNS manually. Go to your internet connections and read the IP of your computer just change the last number of the xbox ip to anything not being used (and keep the dns gateways the same.) Works for me whenever the xbox fails to get an IP.

:lol I hate that. What time zone are you in?
Central time; and today I finally see the glorious 'Backflip is online' thingie pop up, and my shout of rage fills the room--I was just finishing up a match before I had to leave! Foiled by the gods again. One day, it shall happen. I sweat that to you.
Edit: By sweat, I mean swear. But I'll sign the pact with sweat if you'd like. I do sweat a lot once the br action gets heavy...

Now you guys can be assholes and say "that sounds dumb", you can cling to your tampons and say "this won't work", or you can sack up and try it. (or you can ignore it)

For those interested, the plan is to not post from midnight (pacific) until the BWU is out. If someone posts, don't start posting saying it didn't work, or that we're doing this, just watch and observe. If you really miss HaloGAF, try the IRC channel.

Come on guys, give it a shot! Why not? I know you can do this.

So this is what I'm looking at on my PC:

I have no idea what to use to input into the 360 (I'm at the IP input screen). Any ideas?

The problem is the only real time zone is EST. The rest are silly. So without going by official EST time this plan is sure to fail...

Ghaleon use the IPv4 IP address but change the last number to anything not in use by computers or various things you have on your internet (from 1 to 255). Then enter those DNS Server addresses as they appear.

Eastern is the manliest of all timezones, but I wanted to make it pacific so as not to confuse west-coasters, and to allow some breathing room.

Please to fix High Ground spawns thank you.
As noted before, can't "fix" them that simple. This isn't like Standoff or The Pit where the markers can be moved to fix works, for example the heli-pad and the top room (The Pit).

While spawns in High Ground aren't the best, I still prefer that map over many others.

Getting closer. The IP test passed on the Live test, but the DNS is failing.

Under "IP DNS Servers" there are three rows with different addresses. I entered the first one for the Primary, and the second one for the Secondary. Is that correct?

Edit: I just entered the third one for the Secondary and it also failed.

Yea its weird I'm trying to look what I do for me but I only seem to have one DNS entry. But yes I think I used Primary and then Secondary for the 1st and 2nd ones. I've been meaning to writeup a guide on this because it seems to work for people just haven't gotten around to it.

You aren't changing the DNS addresses right? Thats the only thing I can think of.

I think you have to enter the default gateway verbatim too.

Yeah, DNS are the same.

I just noticed that when I set the Live IP settings to Automatic, it captures an IP address and a Subnet mask, but the Gateway comes up as 0.0.0.0. I'm thinking that's where it's failing, but I don't know how to fix it. Thanks for the help, BTW. Appreciated.

Me too. I'm in hour #4 of working this and nothing but this. And it's over 100 degrees right now. Absolute misery. :(

Ghaleon, you didn't commit a bloody sacrifice to the networking god. Extreme acts of voodoo are necessary to get that shit to work.

EDIT: On a more serious note, make sure that UPnP is enabled on your router. On the XBox, set up a static IP address, and use the port forwarding on your router to forward these ports to whatever IP you set up for your Xbox:

UDP 88, UDP 3074, and TCP 3074

It's an easier situation to troubleshoot on location, and harder to explain, since all modems and routers are set up a bit differently. So that might not have helped at all.

I'm going to sacrifice to the credit card gods and buy a new router tomorrow. Hopefully that satiates the networking beast.

Thanks to Juices for helping out in this edition of Help Ghaleon Fix His Shit.

I recommend a D-Link Xtreme Router.

While you can get something like a Linksys WRT54G for half the price, and mod it with some custom firmware to make it pretty reliable (what I have running currently) this puppy is rock solid right out of the box. I have a friend getting his degree in networking and he swears by it.

God, that'll make the work day go by real slow. I need to yell at somebody tomorrow and if it isn't someone in this thread then it'll have to spill over to the workplace :\

You guys think theres going to be any improvement to H3 online with the upcoming install to hard drive feature? Or all of XBL gaming for that matter? I'm hoping most players use the feature to see improvement in map loading or something..

Does anyone here know what kind of AC adapter the wireless headset uses? I might be buying one from a friend, but he doesn't have the AC adatper.
