So.
I got "victory lapped" the other night. BTB, CTF, Valhalla. Every member of my team quit when we went down 0-2, leaving me on my lonesome. I tried a futile base defense, then just hung back and let the other team cap it. But they didn't. They had half the guys work on hunting me down and killing me over and over while the other half paraded about. I just put my controller down, and after five minutes or so they got the point and capped it to end the game. It sucked.
Fast forward to this evening.
Ranked BTB, Assault, Last Resort. My team starts on offense and very quickly gets a score; the other team was rather disorganized. Defense. The red team tries to use the same tactic we did - just swing the 'hog around the side gate and pile in - but we were ready and wiped them out. In return, six out of the eight red players quit. Yikes.
Needless to say, they didn't score, and we did on the next round. But on defense, it's eight of us against an assault of two. Not fair odds by any stretch. As we poured out of the base to catch them on the beach and pound them into dust over and over for the duration of the round, someone says the unthinkable: "Let them score." So, we did.
The two remaining red guys were bravely heading our way for a suicidal attempt at storming the base; driving into the hailstorm. What they ran into was the
opposite of a victory lap: the Enemy Escort.
At this point they're very confused, and flee madly. For the first ten seconds or so they probably just thought they were
awesome.
At this point, I think the idea has crossed their mind that something is up, but they're both jumping like crazy to avoid grenades. Grenades which never come.
Right about here, we've reached the "trusting but paranoid" stage. Probably feeling like they're heading, sheep-like, to a slaughter.
But no. We invite them in, show them the place. Over there's the TV, the wet bar is upstairs.
The bomb plant zone is right this way.
In the post game lobby the two red guys were really appreciative. High-fives all around. It was pretty heartwarming, actually. Often all I hear is how crappy the Live/Halo community is, and here I got matched up with seven other cool guys. We played several more games together as a party.
Oh, and
this right here is why ranked BTB rocks. Our team was down by about 15 early on, something like 25-40. We rally back to a gripping 100-99 victory. Incredibly fun, intense game.
