it's amazing that after my 3rd playthrough I'm still finding cool little shit. I'm in the base (2nd mission I believe) where you have to drive out the enemies. I went the wrong way and a soldier was bangin on the door to get ammo and the dude wouldn't let him in cause he didn't know the password. funny shit.

By remade I mean rehashed in such a way that the original map is still discernible through the changes, meaning that it still retains the qualities and feeling of the original map. I consider something like Valhalla a remake of Coagulation, but I don't consider Guardian a remake of Lockout. Pretty convoluted rules, but hey, what the hell.

I think Valhalla plays more like Coagulation than Guardian plays like Lockout. They feel nothing alike, even though the geometry of Guardian is pretty similar to Lockout, it just doesn't have the spirit.

edit: I don't know what point I was trying to achieve with this post. I want new remakes to look and FEEL like their relative.

Guardian is like one of Zeus' children. Yeah, they all got sweet powers and all that, but it's hard to top the guy who running around shooting lightening out of his butthole and changing into a bull to nail all the hot ladies.

Halo 3 is severely missing indoor Covenant missions and multiplayer maps. I want to have some purple-ass maps like Midship, Damnation, Chill Out, Gemini etc.

Now in the latest update they're talking about a canyon...probably on Earth. This game has enough damn Earth maps!

I want some remakes just because those maps were SO great and a lot of them would compliment the current roster of H3 maps. I think H3 is sorely lacking small symmetrical maps that have a Halo staple and more traditional mid-sized maps. I appreciate the new concepts that are the original H3 maps but its time to get to the REALLY GOOD stuff, IMO.

i want maps that are promote teamwork but not the clingy buddy system holding hands kind. to do this they have to be 1) on the smaller side and 2) open. the problem with the current maps imo is not only that they are big, but that they are sectioned off. what i loved about halo 2 on br start (ok, mlg) is that you pretty much always had a chance to help out your teammates by getting into the right positions and angles and it didn't take awhile to get there. you had to get to p2 on midship and control it just because it was a vantage point from which you could help all your teammates no matter if they're on the opposite side of the map, and you could get there right off the bat by walking a few feet. in halo 3 there are often times just where you can't assist your teammates for a long periods of time because they're behind a gigantic wall or a hill. on the pit if your teammate is on the other side of camo/rocks you can't do anything to help them until you run down a long tunnel and by that time they're dead. it's the same thing on construct with the hallways and lift rooms and isolation with the ridge on top and the underground. this turns it into a game where in order to be successful in a competitive match you have to pretty much roam the map with your team by your side, which slows the game down a whole lot because you have to wait awhile to get paired up and sort of camp to make sure you both get to the area where you can use teamwork at roughly the same time instead of staying on the move and keeping the game going. i don't think of halo as a particularly slow game, and i think the map design has a way of making it that way imo.

Agreed 100%. Halo 3 is ridiculously slow because of this. Mixed with mauler melee-shooting and a broken melee system in general makes me :(.

I don't mind that stuff too much. What I mind is when it takes forever to get into a matchmaking game, when I can't join my buddy's party, when I can't load a playlist and when the fucking game freezes. The last 15 or so days have been fucking annoying.

Fix this shit MS.

That was the idea of Halo 3 MP. They want you to move around and not hole up in the best positions with all the power weapons. I'm not bagging on your preferences or anything. Everyone has a right to want what they want. For me, personally, if I wanted to play a game where I could sit around and camp all day, I'd play CoD 4.

Remakes of Halo 2 maps are kind of silly, imo. We've all played those. It's the Halo 1 maps lots of people never played. And even if they did, they probably ignored all but the smallest maps. Organizing a giant LAN party just isn't practical for most people not in college. So bring on the Chiron TL34 remake Bungie. And if you remake Waterworks, I'm gonna punch Ghaleon in the kidneys. I love BTB, but that map and Containment were awful.

huh? i don't know if you really understood my post

i don't want a game where you can sit and camp. that's not what halo is at all in my opinion. if anything i think halo 3 atm is a little bit too campy and slow. and that's what i like about halo 2, it was the only fps i've played that took incredible teamwork and constant communication at a competitive level while being fast-paced like quake or ut rather than slower and campy like cs or cod. but h3's maps kill that a little bit for me.

really i'm cautiously enthusiastic about purple reign although i'd prefer a direct port of midship, just because middy might be the best halo tourney map ever

I just played the worst games of halo in my life :( Why is it that I destroy most nights and have one night of BS after BS? I mean, it was like everyone was ganging up on me...

oh well, anyone else get those?

How do you and Frank decide who writes a given week's update?

When there's something rad to talk about Frank writes it. When there's not much to talk about and people will complain about there being no news, I get to write it. Frank, naturally, decides that.

I think you nailed it on the head with why I don't enjoy Guardian as much as some. It can be so hard to get around on that map to help your team out with the way it is sectioned. However, The Pit is one of my favorite Halo3 maps. Right now I'd put my top 5 favorite maps for Halo3 as: 1) Standoff: 2) Narrows: 3) Foundry: 4) The Pit: 5) Construct:

Man, I get those all the time. That brings up another reason why I enjoyed BTB before it became unranked. It's a lot harder to get repeatedly screwed in BTB games.

Halo 3 maps

14. Isolation
13. Epitaph
12. Sandtrap
11. Construct
10. Snowbound
09. Rat's Nest
08. Foundry
07. Narrows
06. Valhalla
05. The Pit
04. Last Resort
03. High Ground
02. Standoff
01. Guardian

People complain about the lack of BTB maps, but what bothers me more is the low quality of the smallest maps, at least compared to Lockout-Midship-Ascension etc. On the whole I think the Halo 3 maps are pretty great, particularly the top six or so above.

I completely agree! There aren't enough solid small or mid-sized maps like Ascension, Beaver Creek, Midship, Lockout and Ivory Tower. And in response to your previous post, Waterworks was terrible. I don't know how anyone would have any kind of affection for that map.

I'm really crossing my fingers for remakes of Halo 1 & 2's small and medium-sized best. I have a feeling though that we're going to keep getting mostly new maps and they're going to be less than stellar.

EDIT: Oh, and I'd place Narrows at number 14. I hate it with a passion.

Oh, I forgot Ivory Tower. Honestly, Halo 2 could have just had Lockout, Midship, Ivory Tower, Turf, and Sanctuary and I would have played it just as much as I did. The only BTB map I liked at all was Headlong. I think Valhalla is vastly superior to Coagulation/Containment/Waterworks. Maps like Valhalla and Standoff say to me at least that Bungie has really learned how to divide large maps up into lots of smaller battlegrounds, and give you e.g. Mongooses and mancannons to increase mobility between them. Which is far better than spawning in the middle of a canyon with an SMG, walking five yards, getting sniped, respawing, repeat.

I really liked Headlong. It was the only large map from Halo 2 that I thought was really excellent.

As for Narrows, its a piece of shit. You either have a fight in the back of the bases, at the center of the bridge or by the man cannons. That's only three unique areas for engaging enemies and its really not interesting at all.

It's a pretty small map, how many areas do you want? You could argue that Guardian only has one (the elevator rooms), and lots of other popular maps like The Pit and Midship only really have a couple.

Pretty much every time I pick up a controller.

Waterworks was probably the worst Halo 2 map of all. What's wrong with some of you?
I have a very strong preference for BTB games, and a strong dislike for all on-foot games on small maps with narrow walkways. For this reason, I hated Lockout, which is my least favorite Halo 2 map. (Guardian and Isolation are my least favorite Halo 3 maps.)

Eh, I always game in spurts. Spurt.

Didn't get home until 4am last night and wasn't in any condition to do any gaming. In the immortal words of Danny Glover, "I'm gettin' too old for this shit."

One of my favorite habits to do in Waterworks was to jump into the Wraith and block of any potential by moving the huge crates. Waterworks was a great map as long as it was a BTB objective game. The only time it really fell apart was when you just introduced team slayer.

In general, I still prefer the H2 default maps over Halo 3's. Probably because allot of the maps worked well for BTB. In some ways in comparison, the maps in H3 feel kind of simplified.

The Pit is quite a few actually. There are constant battles at the towers, in the back hallway, in the sword building, under the sword building, at the camo spawn, in and around the spawn buildings, and at the back corners where the shotguns spawn.

As for Midship, the center bowl was home to a lot of hectic combat in King games and Territories. The bases, 1st and 2nd floor, were always a frenzy (because of its design and may entrances). The tower that houses the infamous pink room was a vital point for the map where someone was always trying to hold down. The floating platform sees its fair share of BR or Carbine wielders. And the area opposite the tower houses a frequent spawn area (along with the Carbine) and sees a lot of traffic. Not to mention the walkway above it.

So as you can see, those maps definitely have more interesting areas for encounters than Narrows and they are smaller maps. And after all, its the encounters that make the game what it is.

Same here. There are some small maps that I like in Halo - Rat Race and Turf mostly - but I much prefer the larger choices like Blood Gulch, Waterworks, Sidewinder, Sandtrap and Headlong

I think my main problem with Narrows is how constricted it is in terms of routes/line of sight. Particularly going down or upstairs in the middle of the map just feels like you are walking into grenade traps. I like the bases, but how they are linked feels claustrophobic to me in terms of how you can move and what you can see. And the mancannon is just a death trap.

I tend to like the smaller maps better. Lockout and Midship were so good because both had very minimal dead space and plenty of options for mobility. There's plenty of cover, but none that afforded a truly safe place. I still like the larger maps, but when you spawn away from the action, you often find yourself looking for a vehicle or hoofing it for length of time, where you literally are doing nothing. In the case of Waterworks, nothing usually resulted in the sniper who used the Shee to get on top of the map pulling the top of your head off.

To me, it's just not Halo without a vehicle or two careening about.

Halo 3 maps

*list*

Here's what I think of Halo 3's map selection:

Awesome maps - Rat's Nest, Standoff, Valhalla, Standoff, High Ground, The Pit

Good/"almost there" maps - Guardian (level design doesn't flow as nicely as Lockout), Last Resort (the changes to the base area make it play a bit worse).

Crappy maps - Construct, Epitaph, Isolation, Narrows, Snowbound

Construct, Epitaph and Narrows just suck IMO (uninteresting level design). Isolation design is too familiar to snowbound which makes it kinda redundant. Snowbound is kinda debatable cause I found the shield doors made some interesting combat situations and encounters... but at the same time they're also flawed on something like Oddball where someone can just get grab the ball and camp by the doors and instantly kill (one-hit-melee w/ ball) anyone who dare steps through. And almost every game devolves into camping the underground area with the shotgun. And most importantly the map doesn't work very well at all in objective gametypes either.

One multiplayer map I'd like to see is based on Sierra 117 (the Jungle level). Have a pretty waterfall backdrop and the sun coming through trees and stuff... that'd be cool. Oh and remake Terminal/Headlong plz.
