Would anybody else like to play Last Resort with the layout from Zanzibar? Rockets instead of laser, hammer in the wheel, camo at the tower, and a gauss hog on the beach. Last Resort to me just doesn't seem as fun as Zanzi, and I'm thinking that's why.

That Standoff looks promising. I'd like to see the power drainers removed and more plasmas added. I don't really like power drainers, or bubble shields for that matter - they crowd up the map. Plasma pistoling or sticking a vehicle is a little less cheap than power draining.

Personally I'd like to see a ghost on Standoff, too.

You mean sword?

I would some Gauss Hog action back too. Damn in H2, Host on the back of that baby could fuck some people up.

What version of Zanzibar were you playing? :lol

Honestly, I think the Zanzibar in Halo 2 played more fast paced. But Last Resort is still alot of fun to play on. I guess it's just because it is so big in H3.

Edit: Beaten

At least give the Spartan style points for kicking the elite in the face while it was down :D

Gee, I thought that was a Brute. I thought he looked way too beefy to be an Elite. Now that I look at it closely, maybe that is a tell-tale Elite jaw under that helmet.

Or is the fact that he uses an energy sword reason enough?

I think I have figured out why Microsoft has been making all these shit decisions. I think it's obvious. Check it what it has all led up to... this is just the beginning my friends.

Windows 7 Starter

* Available worldwide to OEMs on new PCs
* Missing Aero UI tweaks
* Limited to 3 simultaneous applications
Arm yourselves, we are at war! May god have mercy on the Xbox's future.

:)

I personally think there's too many equipment in Last Resort.

Say you spawn at beach for 1-CTF. You and your teammates can easily get one bubble shield, and if one or two don't clown around, you can grab the other in small tower. Two easy accesable bubble shields. If another person goes to Froman, there's the Grav Lift. Three equipment pieces about 15 secs. in the match.

I would eliminate the Bubble Shield in the beach tunnel. A Radar Jammer would be perfect for the base entrance near Rockets/Laser, if not below Froman (replacing Grav Lift, but that works for jumping quickly to top entrances near Needler).

Otherwise, with that said and a Rocket Launcher replacing Laser, it would be improved over what's currently set up.

Yeah, that grav lift can change the whole tide of the battle.

Not sure if it's a bad streak, or if it's a a result of the playlist update, but Social Big Team has been turning up game types that I don't find fun at all the past several days.

Heavies on Standoff is the only game type in Halo 2 or 3 that I now just quit out of instantly if it starts. I feel bad, but seriously. :(

Ha nope, we're getting that and put with nothing but parties of 8 now, so everyone quits right at the start. I thought parties of 8 were supposed to go up against other parties? not 8 randoms who have no damn chance.

The last time I played BTB we were getting matched up against a lot of full parties and wannabe clans. Made for some awesome BTBing. Though we did face many teams of randoms including poor Ghaleon.

I don't think the Heavies weighting has been increased, probably just bad luck. If anything Standoff (and it's heavies variant popped up more when the DLC had a higher weighting).

Yeah, that's the other trend I had chalked up to bad luck.

Tonight's games:

One Bomb on Valhalla: It matches us 7 v 7. Two on our team quit in the lobby, and then two more right as the game starts. So it's 7 v 3 now. We let the other team score without resistance, hoping for a quick game. We have the bottom of the last round, down 0-2. Maybe they'll let us arm the bo....nope, it's 7 v 3 Slayer for the last round. Whee. :(

Multi-Flag on Avalanche: Yay, the classic! One on our team quits, but one on the other team quits too. So we're even. I hop in a Warthog, the driver goes straight for a cliff and drives over it. We both die. Yay. Later he splatters me while I'm about to make a flag run. Nails me with a rocket a few minutes later. I boot him. Another on our team quits. So now it's 7 v 5. We barely hold on for the 2-2 tie, after having a 2-1 lead. :(

Slayer Heavies on Standoff: My turn to be a quitting asshole. :(

Slayer Heavies on Sandtrap: One man quits early. We lose 98-100. :(

And these are long games. So one decent game (Sandtrap) out of four, in an hour. Just one of those nights.

But really, I'm just bitchy because I did my federal taxes tonight and the refund is a LOT less than I expected. So ignore me.

What's that on the right?

Oh, its a.."Kill Ball." It's essentially a big sphere that kills anything that is foolish enough to enter.

The Crawf said:

I believe it's a death sphere, anyone who enters it is immediately killed. This could be one way to block off sections of the map effectively or even create a barrier below an elevated map which would immediately kill anyone who fell. It's a clever idea that I never even really thought of.

More info on the 9th as well.
Yep, seems like this map is bigger than a lot of people anticipated.

Here's the IGN article's finer points:
  • Sandbox, as a Forge map, is not as big as Avalanche, but it's huge.
  • The default variant is mid-size to large and is exactly what we've seen in the screenshot.
  • The default ap has rocket launchers and missile pods to offset vehicles.
  • There will be new Forge objects, like tunnels and different sized door frames (crouch height).
[*]There are things about the map they have yet to talk about.
  • There's a big sphere which kills anything to walk into it.
  • The light objects hovering above the base are, in fact, base indicators.
  • The budget is huge, but people are advised to use all available items on the map before deleting them to retain the maximum budget.
  • There will be a 4v4 Team Mythic playlist hopper when the maps launch with Halo Wars.
  • There will be a Sandbox/Forge achievement.
  • Including the maps to ship with ODST, these will be the last maps for Halo 3.

Added for the :D

Well now we know where the light is coming from - spotlights which come from multiple towers that surround and shine onto the play area. Also you can see the moon in that shot behind the tower.

No more maps from Bungie after ODST, a bummer, but at least we know.
Yeah, and it's reasonable. I mean if they continued to support this title, they wouldn't be able to work on their other projects. Halo 3 might be our focus now, but that'll likely change when they start announcing some of the other stuff they're working on. That said, it'd be cool if Microsoft or Bungie considered making a sustainable multiplayer game, like Unreal Tournament, with focus on continued downloadable content and matchmaking throughout an entire console generation. I wonder if that'll ever happen.

And, given the impressive designs I've seen from the rather constricted Foundry Forge-implementation, Sandbox looks like the promise land. We know there are other features coming, stuff big enough for them not to want to reveal it in simply one interview. Even with the stuff we know already, it's taking shape to greatly exceed Foundry. If that's the case, I'd expect that we'll see a number of grand new maps and re-designs of older ones in the coming years. Shishka's going to have his hands full with Halo 3 for awhile, I'd imagine.

Now that we see more of the Forge geometry, I think it's clear that players will be able to come up with some good recreations of Sanctuary, Warlock and other favorites in Sandbox.

My guess on the unannounced features of Sandbox:

The ability to build maps in the air - like Ascension, for example. This would require the ability to raise the soft ceiling to a specific height (so you don't jump and hit an invisible barrier) and add a kill plane - when you fall below a certain height you die.

I know others are still holding on to the idea of modifying the terrain and skybox. Get over it.

well, I guess I'm spending 80 bucks on this map.

I will add that since Bungie doesn't intend to support halo 3 dlc anymore after the last 6 maps, I hope this map really fulfills forgers neesd. Maybe it'll get me back into forging (Real life taking over nooo!)

Best news out of this Sandbox reveal: increased budget. Serously, $510 with the default layout already there? That's a huge deal. So many great maps aren't considered for MLG or matchmaking because the designers had to budget glitch to get their design to work.

I'm looking forward to 5,000 Sanctuary remakes, and a few more nice ideas. The only thing I'm slightly worried about is grenade bouncing off the floor, but it's not a big deal.

I got about three lovely hours with the Halo Wars demo before school today (we had a two-hour delay because of some unexpected flurries of snow during the night).

Impressions coming shortly after 3:00 PM EST!:D Don't have time to do it now.

[edit] Thanks for the summary Voc

IGN said:
IGN: We hear Sandbox is a big map. How big are we talking here?

Lars Bakken: Internally it's what we consider to be a medium to large sized map. In terms of a Forge-based map, it's huge though. It's not as big as Avalanche, for example, but let's just say that people who felt confined in Foundry are going to be very happy.

IGN: What will the default layout for the first floor of Sandbox look like? What kind of gameplay is it best suited for?

Bakken: The default layout is exactly what you've seen in the screenshots. There is a base-like structure on each side of the map, and then multiple cover points laid out in a symmetrical fashion. It's really well suited for Team Slayer, Multi Flag, and Territories. The main vehicles featured are Warthog, Chopper and Mongoose and the default power weapons are rocket launchers and detached missile pods to help balance out the vehicles. Vehicle balance was important in this map, we wanted people to use the vehicles and feel powerful, but not too powerful.

IGN: What new Forge items are being added for use with this map?

Bakken: On top of just about every kind of building block (we hope) you could ever want, there are some cool new goodies too. We have tunnels now, different sized door frames (like ones that are crouch height), and some extra things that we can't talk about yet. One of our favorites though has to be the "Kill Ball." It's essentially a big sphere that kills anything that is foolish enough to enter. Justin Hayward, our art director, was able to cook up a red and blue dynamic light object that will allow players to place them around the map to differentiate bases easier.

IGN: What will the Forge budget be for Sandbox?

Bakken: We were able to play with the numbers a bit and the starting budget is $510 with everything placed on the map you see in the screens. Here's a tip though, there are only so many objects the game allows you to place, so you can still run out of objects before the budget limit is reached. So, for all the hardcore forgers out there, it would be wise to use all the existing objects in the level where possible before you go creating more new ones. You'll get the most out of the map that way.

IGN: Are there any new wacky custom game types that have sprung up in the testing of Sandbox?

Bakken: Well, there is this one gametype we played a lot. It has a flag at each base, and you try to capture your enemy's flag and… get this, you try to bring it back to your own base to score! Hahahaha… Seriously though, nothing on the scope of Grifball or Rocket Race came out of the map while we were testing, but we imagine our fans will come up with some very cool things.

IGN: Which matchmaking playlists will Sandbox, Assembly, and Orbital eventually be incorporated into?

Bakken: When Halo Wars ships, there'll be a 4v4 playlist called Team Mythic that features only the Mythic map pack. After the maps hit Marketplace, we'll start off with some focused Mythic offerings in addition to requiring them in Rumble Pit, Social Team DLC, Social Big Team, Team SWAT and Team Snipers, and optional in pretty much every other hopper. They will not be present in Social Slayer, Social Skirmish, or MLG (unless MLG decides to add variants to their playlist). Double EXP weekends will be updated to feature Mythic after they hit Marketplace. As always we'll continue to monitor how things are going and update the playlists as needed. We're also hoping to see a nice influx of high quality Sandbox variants that will eventually make their way into matchmaking as well.

IGN: What was the inspiration for each of the three new maps?

Bakken: Each one comes from an initial idea of what kind of map we need. We needed some smaller symmetric team game maps, so that's where Assembly came from. We wanted another small asymmetric map, which is where Orbital comes from. And finally we really wanted to give players some crazy new options to mess around with in Forge, and that's where Sandbox came from. In fact, internally we called Sandbox the Forge ++ map, before we settled on the Sandbox name.

IGN: What gaps in the Halo 3 map library do these three fill?

Bakken: Each map fills up areas that fans have been asking for and we ourselves knew we needed. They wanted a new outdoor Forge map, which is Sandbox. They wanted a new small FFA map, which is how Assembly came to be, and they wanted a new small team map which is where Orbital came from. We feel good that these three maps will help fill out the existing roster quite well.

IGN: How long will those who don't pick up the Collector's Edition of Halo Wars have to wait before they can buy the map pack? How much will the pack cost?

Brian Jarrard: The maps will eventually arrive on Live Marketplace as a standalone download for 800 points. Exactly when that will happen is still being finalized.

IGN: Will any new achievements be added with the Mythic Map Pack?

Bakken: Yeah, there are some pretty neat ones that are Mythic map specific. Two of the maps have a weapon-specific achievement, and Sandbox has a Forge specific achievement. Then there are some other ones that are neat for fans, but I don't want to spoil those. I think they have something to do with skulls? ;)

IGN: How much longer will new maps continue to be made for Halo 3? Have resources been shifted to Halo 3: ODST or is there yet more to come?

Jarrard: We haven't actually been working on new maps for quite a while aside from some final testing and preparations for release. These days, we've got a smaller team that's focused on finishing the ODST campaign and all that it entails while the rest of the studio continues making progress on other, larger, secret projects. Once the Mythic maps are released this Spring, fans will still be able to look forward to a few more exclusive new maps that will be included in the Halo 3: ODST release later this Fall.

Overall though, we are viewing the ODST campaign and the included multiplayer maps as the final exclamation point in our ongoing efforts to extend the Halo 3 experience. We're really grateful to our fans for standing by Halo 3 for so long and continuing to show us such strong support. It's been a great ride thus far and but it's not quite over yet. With the wide open possibilities of Sandbox and Forge, two additional solid maps and some new achievements, players will hopefully find plenty of ways to keep having fun with Halo 3 before we unleash ODST later this Fall.

Be sure to check back with IGN on Monday, February 9 for our exclusive look at more of the flexible Sandbox map.

^^^Deathticle lol^^^

It's too bad that there won't be any additional map packs after ODST. I understand why, but I see a HUGE missed opportunity to release "Best of Halo 1" and "Best of Halo 2" map packs. Larger community, more money, feeding my nostalgia, etc. Oh well, I can't wait to play on the new maps (make Legendary free MS) as well as begin the painful wait for Bungie's Next Big Thing.

Didn't notice it at first, but you're 100% correct.

I'd like to see someone try to explain that away or at least accept the possibility that the blue grid we saw in the "thank you" video was more than simply an element of a developer platform or something glitzy image Bungie worked up for gags. If the blue grid is real, how will it affect map design? Does this mean that "thank you" video from Bungie is a saved film of an event which actually took place in Forge?

thanks for the link and pics - this just gets better and better with each update

Sorry to quote the picture, cuz it's huge, but look at the Spartan there. We've established that this is the level with the blue grid where Luke was like "NO NOT YET." Right? Because sandbox is definitely that level. The box that the Spartan is in completely 100% matches the one from the Thank You video :o

And WOW @ all these screenshots.

Also, lol @ the fact that IGN didn't even bother to move their watermark up a few pixels - they just slapped it on top of Bungie's.
