The Official Halo 3 Thread

This has probably been answered, but does anyone know if the Halo engine has been modified/improved at all, for Halo ODST?
I can't wait for that damn game.

That references the Halo 3 sandbox specifically, so I think he's saying that a lot of the weapons from Halo 3 are coming back. The "we're also bringing back..." probably refers to the weapons not in Halo 3. Offhand, I think that's the homing rockets, Halo 1 or 2 pistol or Brute plasma rifle. I'm guessing the Halo 1 pistol. :p

I'm wondering what role vehicles will play in this game.

good games tonight
even though i went negative every game
:lol

The only weapons/weapon tweakings that I can think of being brought back are scoped pistols and rocket launchers that can still auto-lock. What else is there?
the return of the ridiculously homing plasma pistol

I wonder if they are gonna bring back the legendary Harpoon Rifle...

the return of the ridiculously homing plasma pistol

I was trying various sensitivity levels. 1 to 10.

I got frustrated and just stuck with 2 in the last match I played.

Yes indeed. Didn't get to mess around with the new playlists much but those customs were awesome.

I want to harpoon a grunt to the wall SO bad.

10 FTW.

I do not know how or when this happened, but even 10 is slow to me at times now. WTF.

Trasher said:
WTF? I thought you played on 2. When did this happen?
I did play at 2, then it was 5 for a while, now its 10.. i think i need to be on 12 or something. And thermite, i am sooo totally mad.

I had been a 10 guy since Halo 1, but in Halo 3 it just felt wrong when I tried sniping. Now I'm a 6. I feel hindered in close-quarters combat on 6 though... Can't turn fast enough.

Did you happen to hear the negative joke I made about you while I was in command center during that one custom game? If so, my bad, was just a friendly joke. :lol

Fast enough? Jeese. How anyone can play above 5 is beyond me.

Luke, can I have urk's job? I mean, I know we've all "poured" over Cocopjojo's articles at one point or another, but is that information really something you want smeared across the face of your website?

No technology improvements that they've been forthcoming about yet, but the very nature of the game seems to indicate that it will aggressively focus on some of the features represented in Halo 3, but not fully explored. Lighting for one.

With the Rookie being forced to push through the wastes of New Mombasa in the middle of the night, I'd imagine that you're going to see renewed focus on hiding and taking cover, as well as using shadows and the environment to your advantage. I get the feeling when reading about the game that in the hub world you will have this isolated sense of desparation, trudging around by yourself (unless you're playing cooperatively) in its open environment and looking for clues about what has happened while you were unconscious. That will be countered by each spoke mission which will likely have all of the elements we're familiar with the Halo franchise thus far: multi-tiered encounters, vehicle battles, linear mission objectives and brightly-lit environments.

It's an interesting merger and one that I really could not be more happy about.

So anyone from HaloGAF in the QuakeLIVE beta? I think they are finally dishing out codes now as I just got an E-mail with mine.

Enjoying it so far.

Probably would be an excellent idea save the few late nights B.net's frontpage would be transmogrified into a digital shrine for Chris Martin.

Looking for information about possible co-op for Halo PC (nope, was considered but rejected because of the extra work involved, apparently), I came across this;

Shishka's Halo PC Fanstock Writeup

It's a write up from Shishka regarding the PC port of Halo 1.

Rather nice read, also, the lucky shit got to see the E3 Halo 2 in person with some Bungie folk. Haha, I would have been jealous, actually, thinking about it, I'm still jealous, that demo was hot!

Anyway, thought I'd share.

Also, remember Voc's Assembly videos? I rehosted them for anyone that missed them first time around (they had a download limit).

And then there's always the SI; they said it'd play a big role in the game. He may just be something triggered throughout the story in a heavily scripted manner but they could be integrating him heavily into the core gameplay; who knows. It's one of the things that Bungie may use to help compensate for the ODST's relative weakness.

I'm pretty sure that was just for you, Shake - that's the British spelling, isn't it? (Poured, colour, labour, Londoun... you know.)

Social Team DLC is a lot of fun.

Meh, it's alright, nothing to write home about. Out of the two games that I've played of it, got 1 Flag Standoff (ARs, ughhhhhhhhhhhhh) and Multi-Flag Avalanche (why you would ever have AR starts on Avalanche is beyond me). Kind of feels like more of the same.

Ramirez said:
Not had good luck with it, yet. I got 5v5 Blackout ARs & 2 Flag on some crap forged foundry map.
Nothing wrong with that! Assault Rifle is awesome and Blackout is a good map.

Played both of those today, and both were a lot of fun.

May I ask, how?

To me, having AR starts in big maps like Standoff and Avalanche just detracts so much from the game. You can't do jack shit to a Warthog with an AR but with a BR, you might just be able to shoot the gunner off the back.

Doesn't make sense to me why people defend the AR on big maps. It has no place there except as a secondary weapon.

Last night we were all amped to play the playlist and we got neutral assault on Standoff which was fine. Once we spawned we realized they gave us ARs and not even a pistol; there was a hilarious collective uproar. I think it should have been 6v6 (as it stands it's too similar to Social Skirmish) and more like the 4th of July playlist.

I have a feeling that we'll stick with Social Slayer when we have 5 people.

Needs more overly pretentious Bioshock commentary, IMO

Apparently, Amazon has a placeholder page up for ODST. It lists the release date as October 6, 2009. We all know how it goes with these things - it could be entirely incorrect.

But 10/06/08 is a Tuesday...

Because it doesn't detract from the experience when I play. I hardly am in a situation where I have to shoot the gunner with a BR when I can just stick them with a plasma grenade, or go hide inside a building. Plus, it isn't like BRs are hard to find on Avalanche and Standoff.

lawl, I just got Avalanche, and there wasn't even a Hornet on the map, sigh.

What sucks is that the majority of the population is made up of people like the guy above me.

Squad Battle is all BR starts!...... unless the changed that in the update....and it's not a DLC playlist...... but BRs!

*edit* oops I misread the complaints, I thought you were in Social Big team DLC

If only it was unranked so we could find some games.

BTB has been BR starts except for on shitty gametypes but I suppose that's only to rub in how bad those gametypes are.

My first game of 5 on 5 social Slayer turned out to be 4 on 4. :lol The extra 2 players really does speed up the pace and is a nice breath of fresh air for Social Slayer, the games last night in that hopper were particularly fun.

That information is not entirely legitimate. Nor is it particularly correct.

Well that saves some barking up the wrong tree, thanks for the pointer. Dammit, got into a good discussion last night about how the possible location of the Assembly skull too.

This new Team hopper should have been a social version of Squad Battle, seems easy enough, or like someone said, the 4th of July playlist.

I don't really see that as an insult Dax, the majority of the population does like ARs.

seriously not even a pistol
yes there are brs on the map but when every person wants one there is always going to be one or two people who can't find one and on open maps like standoff and avalanche not having a br is a serious disadvantage.

and omlet no love lost. i was having a bad halo night and any jokes made at me during that game were well deserved

How immature. If I don't insult you, I can't understand why you can't refrain yourself from insulting me.

Technically it wasn't an insult. Your viewpoint goes against his on the issue. I imagine most here would agree about non-BR starts on the bigger maps (based on the sames some of us played last night).

Not that there is anything wrong with disagreeing, and he's probably right about your opinion being in line with most people online, otherwise, chances are that the BR would feature more prominently.

After getting my ass handed to me on the bigger maps, being spawned with an AR and having a hog spawn killing, it wasn't any fun for the team.

I imagine that if I was driving the hog, the opposite would be true.

===

On an unrelated note, chasing someone down, whilst wielding a single pistol and killing them with it, is the most badass thing ever. More badass than fighting elites.

Oh look at you. Yesterday it was all, "fix BR spred shiksa the BR spred is laem u sux"

Now you're all, "giev me BRs all teh tiem they r grate."

Yeah, it sucks that that playlist is basically unplayable for us.

Ramirez said:

Even Dax is offended by being called "like Dax"

Casual plays love the AR because the BR requires a touch of concentration and skill. When playing with my roommates (~lvl 35) they'll actually switch from the BR to the AR; I'll gun their asses down with my BR and try to convince them to stick with the BR but nothing sticks.

The problem with AR starts is that there are BRs on the map and if a full team has BRs it's too hard for the respawning AR team to do anything. If you're not going to spawn with a BR make the map have no BRs and it can be like team duals.

Finished reading the Cole Protocol yesterday, and it was very entertaining. Reading the books always makes me want to play campaign some more. Would love to do some co-op with skulls.

Reading the books also makes me look forward to playing as an ODST. Silenced sub-machine gun looks amazingly fun. Really looking forward to the feeling of struggling to survive against powerful aliens instead of feeling empowered to wipe them all out.

Except out pistoling someone who has a BR. :D

Feel free to invite me if you are doing Campaign, I need to to do it all over again (and get skulls) because of my change to a new GT.

Hah, good point!

I got one better, dropped a sniper across the map in Foundry with a single shot from a pistol. He hit me once and dropped my shield, I aimed at his head and preyed. Somehow, as luck would have it, someone stripped his shields with a nade and my most glorious kill was mine.

I've been nearing rank 10 in the playlist, and it did dawn on me once I saw the rank distribution graph that I could be screwing myself down the road. It's too bad, cause the rank is fairly irrelevant as the game is decided generally by who has more guys who are 40-50 in another playlist.

---

*edit* oops I just noticed Eazy more or less said my point here, nevermind.

I may regret this, but I probably prefer AR vs AR more so the BR vs BR fights. The whole guns, grenades, melee trifecta thingy. But it's the fact that BRs exist that ruins it for the AR. I'm not an idiot, if I don't have a BR, it's the first thing I'm looking for. If they're was some sort of crazy no BR/Carbine on maps variant, that might be interesting. Like some sort of bizarro, mirrorverse MLG world. Full of SMGs! Spikers! Needlers! With grav lifts on spawning!

But seriously, I would be curious to know how a no BR/Carbine map would play. And what spawning with grav lifts would do.
