The Comprehensive PC Games Sales Figures Thread.

So call me crazy, but I'm taking a quick glance at the sales numbers here and it seems to me that PC gaming never really died but rather the market never really grew to COD type numbers.

The fallacy in that entire mindset is that it presumes "console gaming" grew to COD type numbers. On the contrary, Call of Duty grew to Call of Duty type numbers. Practically nothing else comes close, on any platform.

It's also why people are so radically misinformed about what concurrent player numbers should be deemed impressive. Call of Duty regularly has millions playing concurrently, so when people saw Skyrim doing around 300,000 on Steam, they went "meh".

Again, on the contrary, while Call of Duty does 1-2+ million concurrent players, practically nothing else comes anywhere close.

That's why I didn't specificially say "console."

According to this video Mount & Blade has sold over 1 million copies, but it doesn't say if this is the original game, Warband, or even With Fire and Sword, or all of them put together.

Farming Simulator > http://www.mcvuk.com/news/read/farming-simulator-ploughs-into-3ds/089859

The Farming Simulator PC series has sold close to 2m copies worldwide – 80 per cent of which are boxed.

We don't know if it's for the latest iteration (2011) or for the entire franchise. I think it's for the the franchise if we follow this other quote coming from the same source a few month before > http://www.mcvuk.com/news/read/farming-simulator-sells-500-000-units/084560

There's proof that farming isn’t just popular with casual gamers – Farming Simulator has sold 500,000 copies worldwide.

The specialist PC series has sold 300,000 units in Germany alone following the release of Farming Simulator 2011 last November, which also broke into the PC Top Ten in the UK.

The Witcher 2 sold 1,110,055 copies in 2011

and The Witcher 1 sold 401,543 copies in 2011

http://www.eurogamer.net/articles/2012-02-21-the-witcher-2-sold-1-1-million-copies-in-2011

From my math CD Projekt got more than 25m$ back from The Witcher 2 sales, where development cost around 10m.

Look at those long legs on The Witcher.

If they were able to develop The Witcher 2 for around $10 million, it just shows how bloated the industry has become. They crafted a large RPG with maybe the best production values of any game released last year and their budget is a small fraction of what the big publishers are spending on similar projects.

If every game didn't need to sell multiple millions of copies to be successful, the industry would be in a better place.

Wow at Witcher 1 numbers. Those are looong legs. As of mid 2010 witcher 1 sold 1,5mln coppies. So considering later half of year and almost 500k of 2011 sales. W2 sold now more than 2mln coppies.

Impresive stuff for CD Project Red.

2 million for the Witcher 1 is fucking sick. Hopefully W2 has those kinds of legs, and the console version should do some good numbers as well, hopefully.

Duke Nukem 3D sold around 3.5 million copies according to this article.

There are more then enough people willing to buy games on PC. It's just that publishers and developers see the console sales, get greedy and want a slice.

Taken from Frictional Games blog "Amnesia, Two years later"

http://frictionalgames.blogspot.co.uk/2012/09/amnesia-two-years-later.html

"Amnesia has sold almost 1.4 million units! This reasoning is not strictly speaking invalid, but I think that one should not really count anyone that bought the bundle and already owned Amnesia as a proper unit. A slightly pessimistic guess (not far from reality I think) is that 2/3 of every bundle and pack buyer already owned Amnesia. This gives us about 920 000 units in total, pessimistically speaking. So saying that we have sold a million units seems fair. Wait... a million units! Oh shit!!"

"Also worth noting that our Penumbra games are still going on at the same rate that they always have. They are still selling about the same numbers (a little more actually) as they did three years ago. This totals to about 900 units per month. Taking all sales together is more than enough to support the company, financing A Machine For Pigs (more on that later) and having some left over. This means that we are in a very good position and aim to use it to take more risk and try out new things (more on this later).

I think we have never disclosed how much we Amnesia cost to make, so might as well do that here. The (exactly) three years of development cost a total of 360 000 US Dollars. It has since earned more than ten times that. Take that investors we talked to in 2009!"

He must not be factoring in cost of labor (or the equivalent of how much a developer would be making in a job in industry over the same period).

Crusader Kings II has now sold more than 1 million units as of september 2014 (source)

The source for Reus figures seems to link to an article about Anno Online.
