Syphon Filter Revival - How?

Logan's Shadow ends with a massive cliffhanger and the potential death of Gabe Logan. I don't know if we'll ever get another SF game or not... maybe that mysterious 'Kill Strain' title. But if not, here's how I'd bring the franchise back, for one final instalment with the very first hero that I ever loved: Gabe Logan.

Here's my vision for a Syphon Filter revival. An epic espionage and revenge saga.

Like the Count of Monte Cristo, but with more killing and subversion of world governments

Story

The game starts with a reporter writing up a human interest story about the infamous Gabe Logan, former war hero turned traitorous traitor...

The game would be split up into three primary parts: Part 1 is set in a remote Chinese prison (I'm thinking the Chateu d'If crossed with Bane's prison in The Dark Knight Rises rules over by Chinese hardcases) for spies and dissidents where Gabe Logan has spent the past decade or so locked up and framed for crimes he did not commit. Logan and the IPCA has been swept under the rug and forgotten by the rest of the world. Most, if not all, of his friends are dead. The people responsible, part of a conspiracy deeply embedded in American and Chinese governments, militaries, and industry have pretty much gotten away with it. Act 1 is primarily Gabe Logan either reminiscing in his cell or being tortured by a deliciously evil prick and is primarily composed of random, broken fragments of memories and dreams for the levels. So we hop around some of Gabe's greatest hits and flash back to earlier things from his life we hadn't seen (such as a level set during Operation Desert Storm). This way, we can establish his history, the history around Syphon Filter (the virus), and establish his decaying state of mind, and his iron resolute will.

Act 1 ends spectacularly with a massive prison riot and breakout. A core group of individuals loyal to Logan escape with him as he plans to arm up and chase down the people responsible for his imprisonment and the destruction of the IPCA and the revival of Syphon Filter. This section involves a lot of varied globe-trotting with a lot of neat set-pieces so the players don't get bored. Each environment must be very distinct from the last and every facet of gameplay, the ebb and flow should reflect that.

The third act takes place primarily in either the United States or maybe a highly dense urban area such as Tokyo as Gabe Logan races to prevent a massive terrorist strike that involves the use of Syphon Filter. I have more ideas, but this is how the three acts of the story are broken down: The Prison, The Mystery, and The Vengeance.

In terms of gameplay, I want every experience to feel unique, which is hard to do with a third person cinematic stealth shooter, as we all well know...

There has to be multiple ways to complete missions, and you should be able to choose how you play in a lot of instances (non-lethal versus lethal), but I wouldn't penalize players for choosing one or the other. It's really up to their preference. The air taser has to come back and set people on fire.

Gabe wouldn't run like he has a diaper on.

I'd have three playable protagonists, and their gameplay sequences should each feel unique. Gabe is the primary, so his would be classic action and stealth. I'd have a female reporter (similar to Elena Fisher) and her sequences would be a lot of sneaking, investigation, and conspiracy unraveling. I want her sequences to feel tense and dark. I haven't quite nailed the third character, but I think it'd be a part of Gabe's band of broken and burnt out soldiers that escaped from the prison (I'd totally get Nolan North to play him).

"Do you think Gabe's lost his fucking mind?"

"Probably."

Most of the time, it would be Gabe that you control, while the rest of his team follows their own objectives, but Gabe would also command them in squads when the occasion calls for it. It's not alien to the series, I think. He is a leader.

I have an idea in my mind for an amazing scene near the end where there's a US senator shitting his pants as Old Man Logan in a trenchcoat walks into a building with a group of gas-mask wearing shocktroops follow. Just a nice twist on the classic villain trope. I also have sketched out the beginning parts in the prison quite well. It's quite a dark and hallucinatory journey through the mind of Gabe Logan before the prison break, which I am determined to make the greatest prison break of video game history. I also have a bank heist sequence in mind (even the Count of Monte Cristo couldn't work his revenge plan in on a budget)

I wanna open the levels out and give them depth, allowing you to tackle the enemies and objectives from multiple angles while still being able to enjoy the story. Rather than throwing waves after waves of enemies, there should be fewer enemies who are smarter and more dangerous. I'd want the AI to not be pure scripted, but procedural (?) Boss fights are essentially individuals as good as Gabe. I'd almost wanna take a look at survival horror games for ideas with boss fights. They have to be tense as fuck, but the reward is that sheer feeling of awesomeness when you beat them at their own game. No 'shoot the guy in the weak point rinse/repeat' nonsense. Every encounter feels unique.

And yes, we need a flamethrower guy.

What would you do?

Fuck Sony for ending it on a cliffhanger.

Very cool ideas, but if they bring it back, it'd be a microtransaction-filled, QTE-infested, cutscene-filled press x to awesome monstrosity, with tacked-on stealth sections. Probably.

New character tasked for hunting gabe logan, throughout the game you uncover some conspiracy and end up joining gabe logan. In the future sequel, logan will act more as mentor to the new character.

Stealth in syphon filter has always felt tacked on to me. It has always been action first, than stealth

I would remake the first game.

A current gen reimagining of the Pharcom warehouse battle could be amazing.

Also, Gabe Logan all day, I don't want to play as any other chumps.

A reboot would be great.

Do you guys think they should keep the target lock on aiming? It is kind of a staple of the series. Do you think players today would totally look down on it?

Oh, and Gabe need to have a team. This has always felt the differentiator for syphon filter to me compared to other action stealth games. I havent played many splinter cell, but I got the impression that he's more of a solo operative just like snake.

Snake may have a team providing intel. But he usually go into the mission solo. Even in psp games where you only play as Gabe, there are missions where your team will go along your mission. Either as helicopter pilot, or the demolition guy etc.

Anton Girdeux, such a memorable boss fight, man I would kill for a Syphon Filter revival, absolute original PlayStation classic.

They should keep it. The game is all about shooting on the move, that's what makes it feel like Syphon Filter. If there's a cover system, just make it so the player can only use free aim while in cover.

I don't know the answer. What I do know is that if the main character doesn't have the same run animation as in the first game, then I have no interest.

No need for it now, that kind of run and gun gameplay doesn't need to be handicapped. There's no way that would be accepted now. I use it in GTA because who cares, but in a linear action shooter, no.

Main thing I need from a new Syphon Filter is a wide variety of missions and settings. Every level felt unique in those games, they all had their own memorable hooks.

One thing is for sure, bring back the long range taser that either incapacitates or burns people alive.

As for the gameplay, a Arkham City styled open world with main objectives scattered across a city and surrounding wilderness would be neat.

Gritty, origin story reboot.

David Hayter as Logan.

The fuck is this ? That's not Gabe Logans voice. Sure he's had a couple of voice actors over the years but just bring either John Chacon or James Arnold Taylor back, I wouldn't want Hayter anywhere near this. You do that and you get the rage from me that the MGS fans had over Hayter being replaced.

It also needs to have all the gang back as far as I'm concerned - Lian, Theresa and bring back Aramov just because.

God I miss Syphon Filter :(

Looking back, Syphon Filter 2 was actually better than Metal Gear Solid. One of the greatest third person action video games of all time.

I need to shoot a guy behind me, while I'm running away from them, then do an army roll and shoot another guy off a balcony.

Max Payne might be able to pull that off using bullet time, but what makes Syphon Filter's action unique, is doing all that stuff at normal speed. Only other solution I can think of is Splinter Cell style Mark and Execute, which sucks.

Pretty sure I can do that just fine with uncharted control scheme, they just need to make sure the camera speed is fast and responsive

When has Syphon Filter not had tacked on stealth sections? Even the PSP games had tacked on stealth sessions. Also had qtes too tbh but least not let's be lazy and make this a cutscene style qtes.

i loved this so much! This series was a lot better than MGS IMO

i especially loved the second game

I definitely agree about having Gabe in a mentor role. I know they basically tried that with Omega Strain. But that game wasn't too great. Aside from that I really do think that the action needs to be front and center. The stealth was always just kinda there. I would say at most perhaps something like Uncharted where in a area you could try and sneak but if it gets botched theres no trouble to the player aside from maybe a bit more enemies to handle.

Also I love the idea of a Revenge Plot though OP.

When they made it handheld exclusive they broke my heart. So not doing that would be great, even if it is just a fancy port.

If they make a.new.game, they should drop the syphon filter title, but keep the universe and characters. The series is so old, the title alone wont be a big draw as no one remembers the series, and the actual syphon filter virus hasnt been around for a.while. anyone who remembers the series enough to buy it for the name would probably find out about it from game news sites.

call it "The agency" or something, or steal from the Bourne series and keep calling it "Logan's X"

David Hayter as Logan.

Snake as logan? Definitely something they should do.

Was I the only one who liked Omega Strain? The levels were fucking huge, and the online co op was great. You actually had to strategize beforehand with mics as to what objective everyone was gonna do once you get into the mission. And because the levels were big once it started everyone broke off to accomplish their thing. It was a very cool feeling because everyone had to pretty much depend on everyone else to succeed.

Gabe Logan. Open world. No missions, just you, a tazer and thousands of terrorists to set on fire. You're welcome, internet.

Seriously though, reboot it but please don't make it gritty and realistic. I personally loved Omega Strain and I think something along that line with dynamic missions in each level, would be great. Hell, open it up for user generated missions while you're at it. Fuck, just give me a new SF game....I'd probably even buy it if it was a CCG.

As long as it's got that awesome, smooth, multidirectional running animation i'm sold. Even back then as a kid i loved that running animation. Lol

man I loved that fight. LOOOGAAN! that guy was hilarious. I don't care what they do but I want this game on the ps4. Fuckin sony man. Why hasn't this game returned yet

No need to write that much fanfiction OP. If there's ever another SF it'll be a reboot, or far removed from Logan's Shadow. We presumably never got SF6 because LS didn't do so hot.

Both PSP games were ported to a home console.

Well, you could remove all the baggage by setting it a long time after LS. New players will simply start off as an old spy/killing machine.

Unfortunately they edited Dark Mirror quite a bit for the PS2 version. The PSP versions remain the best versions of those though I don't believe Logans Shadow was edited.

Also Gabe Logan NEEDS to be the main playable character again, none of this mentor shit.

So if I was going to get into Syphon Filter, what games are necessary to play? Start with the PS1 games?

If you don't mind playing PS1 games then yeah start from the beginning. Syphon Filter was one long story that continued from game to game. You also come to know characters etc
