I bought the system 5 months ago without expecting me to become obsessed with it, and that is basically what the first year was. So I voted C as a passing but not impressive grade. I mean, I've only bought 3 games (played 2) for the system so far, which isn't all that much.
From a first party perspective, while they had an appropriate volume of games, the quality and nature of those games was less than impressive. A $70 Mario Tennis isn't going to convince people to buy a brand new system. A kids game like Yoshi isn't the right decision for a premier system. Pokemon Legends and Metroid Prime may have been the right types of games to showcase improvements on the system via upgrades, but neither game hit it out of the ballpark.
So far, DK Bananza is the only first party S2 exclusive game that is on my serious radar, and even that one isn't particularly high. I mean, I'll probably play it eventually, but that sort of destruction based gameplay isn't what I was looking for for the first premier platformer on the system. And sadly, that's it. Sure, Pokopia and Hyrule Warriors and Mario Kart are nice to have, but not particularly in a rush for those. and Fire Emblem is the only one I've got on my radar so far; hopefully that changes next week.
Third party wise, it's a little better. FF7 Remake was cool, and not at full price which was also cool. Blue Prince was a nice surprise, as was Pragmata. I'll probably buy Kunitsugami next time it's on sale. and Adventure of Elliot is basically a day 1 purchase. So I've got stuff I'm interested in. My hope for the system was always that the "port to Switch 2" button was cheaper that the "port to Switch" button was, making it cheap enough that most companies would just roll with it. It definitely seems better than Switch, but not quite to the rate I had hoped. Still about what I expected.
But again, I didn't expect to be amazed. The era of amazing new experiences for new systems is over. Most of the games I'm interested in are indies thanks to the sheer volume of them, and most of those work just fine on the Switch. And since I have a more comfortable joycons for my Switch + a D-pad (and I play a ton of 2D games), I tend to use my old Switch more. Not exactly like the warm fuzzy feelings of the past, but such is life.
I'm not upset I bought it (especially with the price increase), but hopefully things look better in the next 12 months.
