Sony announces new disc based system

Sony knows exactly what they are doing. Spitting in the face of their fans and not giving two fucks about it. Disgusting behavior. But what do you expect from this anti-consumer corporation at this time? It's par for the course.

Costs less than a PS5 and plays physical media.
Lately it feels like Sony has a trolling quota to meet they had been repressing for as long as they felt they had competitors.

Why? Game discs cost a fraction of the cost to make/ship than vinyl. Kinda missing the irony/joke here, aren't you?
Collectors game discs would not be much cheaper

Besides a lot of extra cost is not due to production cost but rather producer premium for bothering with low volume production

Sony would be very happy to sell you 300$ discs addon and 150-200$ "collectors edition" boxes with discs for 3+yo games. Maybe they will revisit this idea when masses get used to digital only future

Why do you guys make it personal? it's really childish and over the top, typical of online behavior today. If you don't agree with the decision they've made that's fine, what they are doing makes total sense from their point of view, you don't have to agree and you don't have to continue buying their products. Nobody at sony is sitting in a back room smoking a cigar and drinking Cognac (or Saki) and laughing at you or bragging about how they upset you. There aren't enough physical buyers to make it worth it, they make twice as much from a full priced 3rd party digital game sale as they do a physical one, the publisher makes more money as well and when it comes to fist party it's even more.

I understand people not liking change, the world sucks now in many ways and technology seems to be the reason for a lot of it. We don't play games from the disc anymore it's a delivery method, just having the disc doesn't mean you own anything, especially with so many of them being incomplete and requiring a download to get the rest of the data so you can actually play it.

BTW no corporation is pro consumer, they are pro their investors and if some things align from time to time that's great but being pro consumer isn't any of these companies priority, not Sony, Nintendo, MS, Google or any other.

You just repeated everything in the comment you're replying to, only with twice as many unnecessary words.

Companies are shitty to customers so customers should just be ok with it. I'm sorry, but to hell with that.

Funny enough Sony's 2013 'how to share your games on PS4' video, in contrast to them pulling the rug out on physical media 13 years later, is a prime example of how opportunistic these companies are. They didn't give a single fuck about physical media back then, but Xbox handed them the easiest PR win ever and they leveraged that to look 'pro-consumer'. And now, with Xbox not an entity they need to respond to competitively anymore, they no longer need to do the performative 'for the players' thing. If Xbox wasn't so fucked at the moment, this is the perfect situation for them to come up with a 200gb disc solution ( Ultra HD DVD?) and double down next gen on physical media with the same 'we're the good guys' flair Sony displayed back in 2013.

So many wanted Xbox out of the game and thought for sure Sony would still be a good guy in the process

People are getting what they asked for and many warned what the future could hold with only one player to choose from
