Sonic Mania Animated Opening Revealed

Not crazy about the music, doesn't fit very well nor it says "Sonic game" to me, but the animation is downright gorgeous and watching this made me very happy as a fan.

I promised myself I wouldn't watch it and wait until next week but fuck it. I'm even more excited now, can't wait!

Yeah, I don't really understand the criticism surrounding the music either, I thought it fit the opening pretty well.

Also, as much as I love the opening for the original Sonic CD, let's be honest. The theme for it didn't exactly fit the world of Sonic anymore than the Hyper Potions theme does (actually, I'd argue the Hyper Potions theme is much more appropriate in giving off that early 90's vibe for classic Sonic). The Sonic CD opening has its passionate fanbase for sure (I personally like both the Japanese as well as English versions), but I have a feeling if it were released today it probably wouldn't be as well-regarded as it is now (despite it being catchy).

It's not bad, it's just that the pre-order trailer's music was 11/10 and set expectations for this sort of thing high.

If the pre-order trailer track is "outstanding," this track is "above average."
 
Just as a heads up for those looking to not spoil anything past the opening, don't watch it over and over to look at all the details. I'm out now. It's going to be a hard 5 days.

Sorry, I meant the criticism here in this thread not on YouTube. Nice to see it being more well-received there.

While people are of course entitled to their opinions, I was surprised to see as many people in this thread be negative towards the theme, but then personal preference plays a large part of that. Personally, I thought it went well with the visuals, but then again...personal preference, haha.

Fair enough!

I too enjoyed the pre-order track a bit more, but still liking what I'm hearing here, so it's a win for me either way. Man, Tuesday is so close, here's hoping Amazon ships my CE on-time. :/

Love it, love it, LOVE IT!

That's some beautiful animation, everyone is so expressive and the music itself is pretty catchy. The zone reveals also got me psyched.

Tuesday feels so far away now fuck....

There's no reason they couldn't just use Mania as a platform to keep putting out new levels for a while.

Or maybe the DLC is the fourth character. Which I haven't paid attention to leaks, so I don't know if that's true or not; I've been saying it for a while now based on the fact there's always a light cyan color bundled with the other three character colors in the trailers.
 
When I see this, I want the Sonic IP to be removed from the Sonic Team and Taxman to be tasked to make Sonic 4 or 5 whatever, with the same kind of visuals as Wonderboy Dragon's Trap remake but with the trailer artstyle and a switch button to classic sprites. Uuuugh i want i waaant.

If mania keeps holding up it'll be up for my GOTY against Zelda and Mario (from the looks of it).

When could we all say that about Sonic?

Taxman and Co...Sega should fucking bow to you all for making this happen.

Because Classic fans have known exactly what they want for years. I'm so glad they got the right people for the job! Game looks incredible
 
After the mountain of gameplay footage I've watched it's strange how it's this animation that's made me pre-order.

TBH I should have done a long time ago but was gonna wait for reviews.
