RTTP: Battlefield V: I'm sorry GAF, I was wrong

Given the myriad of issues that BF2042 has been going through I decided to go into the way back machine and download BFV again. I think I dumped this game somewhere in the 3-4 month mark after launch because I just wasn't having fun. BF1 had already kinda soured me on the series as it was a massive disappointment after BF4, so I was already not really hot on the series when I picked up BFV.

I hated the maps and gunplay just didnt feel quite right IMO.

Fast forward to a few weeks ago when I dove in again and immediately started playing the Pacific theater content (which I didnt stick around for originally). This is so so much better than I remember. The Pacific content feels like a return to form. The maps just play much closer to the previous BF games that I enjoyed. Wide open, lots of different angles of attack but also some nice, more contained areas for close quarters fighting. (I havent really jumped back into many of the OG maps again though, so those might still be shit).

Gun play feels like it had been changed as well. I cant remember exactly what it was I didnt like about the gunplay when I played during the launch window but guns feel pretty snappy for the most part. TTK feels a bit longer than BF4 but not overly so.

I even like some of the match types they added: The transmission mode where you have to build radio towers is great fun and fortifications finally made sense to me. It's pretty fun to defend your tower and funnel troops into kill-zones but they feel fairly balanced since you cant make an impenetrable fortress with them. Tanks, grenades and bazookas can still make short work of your walls and barbed wire.

Team play even seems to be much higher than I remember. I cant think of the last BF game where I was revived so often. Players seem to go out of their way to get you back in the fight (I could have just been lucky in the servers I was playing in though).

I will say that BFV seems to have at least ended on being a solid entry to the series. If you arent feeling the love with 2042, then maybe you will find what you are looking for if you take a step back to the previous entry.

Not really fair to compare a launch Dice title to one that has had years of time to fix up. Maybe better if you compare both games within a similar time period in post launch. Especially since you are talking about the Pacific theater which was the last major update to the game. There is even that Metro clone which is a fun map. In BF5 gunplay and TTK were better at launch than they are in their current state imo. They made a change once and everyone complained since it was like the one thing that kept everyone playing. Then they changed it a 2nd time but they firmly planted their foot down saying that they refused to rollback the change the 2nd time around. It was a move made to bring more general appeal for less skilled/newer players so that they were less discouraged when being killed at a distance(I only harp on it cause it irks me every time I play the game).

Honestly, I don't know what it really was about V, but there was a number of things that felt like they were missing. At least in terms of a Battlefield.

Maybe it's because the maps didn't feel so wide and vast? Unsure. But there were a lot of moments where I felt like I was playing a wanna-be COD title, or something along those lines.

V was the first "mainline" BF game that I didn't buy day 1, I say mainline because I didn't buy Bad Company day one. But other than that, I did ever since 1942. When I eventually got V for like $15/$20, I played it quite a bit. While it was better than I was expecting with all the flak it received, it just didn't feel like Battlefield to me.

The funny thing about 2042, is that it FEELS more like a Battlefield game to me than V did, but now the issue I have are the were game design changes. Specialists with unique abilities, no scoreboard, etc. Just so odd.

Can't wait to see threads praising BF2042 when the next BF is released.

Honestly, it could just be that Im looking back with rose tinted glasses by comparison but I've also been playing a bit of BF4 again as well so I think I have it right. Its not as good as BF4 but it is fun. Like I said though, I havent gone back to many of the original maps though so I might still hate those. Also, i guess if the series keeps declining then this is what you will get. People will start to appreciate things that the previous release didn't fuck up.

Did you play the Pacific maps? They are pretty good IMO.

I liked 5 more than BF 1. I liked the smaller maps. I thought some of the fortification things were interesting. Honestly I never had a huge issue with the game except the WW2 setting which is kind of boring. Problem for me is I don’t think larger player counts make better multiplayer shooters in general so Battlefield has always been a game I pick and play a bit but never get too heavy into.

Nah, I went back after launch to play the Pacific maps and still felt like a step back after BF1. Weapons didnt feel as punch. Attrition was still bad. No one was playing as squads. Lots and lots of long distance shooting which creates these really slow slogs of matches that go nowhere.

I don't agree with this at all. Do the devs completely forget everything they learned with the previous game when they start on the sequel? I'm not just talking about the glitches.

different strokes for different folks I guess. I didnt mind the maps in BF1 but the gunplay was shit IMO. Totally ruined the experience. Maybe I've gotten lucky but I havent been as annoyed by snipers in BFV in my revisit as I remember with BF1.

I liked BFV from the start. I didn't run into any significant bugs and I'm casual so I don't care about the minutia of TTK or whatever. Also I liked that there was plenty of color. My main complaint was that BF is more fun with more vehicles.

I’m always playing it on the weekends if someone wants to play (EuW).
I like it a lot especially the Med class with the 383 weapon. I have 2042 too but I rather play BFV right now!

there are a lot of cheaters tho (PC)

BF V stills looks better than 2042, too. I don't know DICE has been doing all these years. Worse graphics, less features, less maps, no campaign, but just as many bugs.
Gotta agree with this based on what I've seen. It's understandable considering the expanded scale, but it still looks weird to see a wall in BF2042 made up of like 6 polygons. BFV has excellent visuals.

I've played BF4, BF1, BF5 and thoroughly enjoyed them all. They all had there own strengths and weaknesses, but bf2042 is on another level of steaming hot turd. January or February will be when I might jump in or I'll skip it altogether.

When BF5 clicks it's hard to match. When you have balanced teams on the larger conquest maps it's amazing. They made squads even more important by making it possible for squad leaders to call in air strikes or the rocket, smoke barrage (amazing for rushing), vehicles... I have no idea why BF2042 didn't continue this. If they made it so that you could order airstrike on the camping hotspots on those skyscrapers maybe it would actually be possible to capture those points.
BF5 rocket air strike actually reminds me of a feature from BF3. I remember how when one team was able to completely dominate and take all the objectives the opposite team was given a vote (if i remember correctly) to nuke all the enemies. Literally killing the other team and giving them a chance to retake at least one objective. Obviously this is a bit different but I got the nostalgia hit.

Nothing comes close to the tense battle in rush mode defending Iwo Jima last objective on the top of the mountain. A pure and utter massacre, air-strikes falling left and right, rockets deployed, tanks charging, smoke everywhere, and you just spamming button to redeploy after dying to try and hold the top of the mountain no matter what. BF2042 in comparison feels utterly sterile.

Your counter point doesn't address the point. It more goes into a side issue. My statement is not an excuse for their ineptitude. Sadly your question can be posed for DICE with almost all of their releases since the ps3/360 era.... if not all(in other words I agree with your side point).

Opinion disregarded.

Okay, seriously, you do you. I just couldn't get BFV after how the developers treated their potential customers; I wasn't and won't reward that. From the videos I've seen though, it does look much better than the thing 2042 is. I'm not sure how much of an accolade that is though.

The reason I didn't like BFV were because they had a bunch of CoD-type corridor maps where you couldn't go everywhere like you can in BF maps generally, Amsterdam comes to mind in that regard, but there were others like not having enough tanks and vehicles. BF4 was the perfect BF game. If they re-released it with current gen graphics I'd buy it immediately (and no if they add BF4 maps to Portal that's not the same thing).
