Splatoon-like PS5 exclusive Foamstars will enter open beta today, giving players a chance to try out the game for free. Sony and Square Enix have confirmed that a PS Plus subscription is not required to jump into the party online.

In case you missed it, Foamstars is a 4v4 party shooter for the PS5 and PS4. However, the open beta is exclusive to the PS5. Players will be able to try out two modes: Smash the Star and Happy Bath Survival. Each will come with eight characters to choose from, with different play styles, specialist weapons, and unique skills.

The open beta will also give PS5 owners a chance to experience console-exclusive features like shooting foam with adaptive triggers and haptic feedback. Foamstars also supports motion sensor and gyro aiming.

As for when the party will kick off, here are the beta dates and times:

  • Friday, September 29, 6 p.m. PT / 9 p.m. ET – Sunday, October 1, 11:59 p.m. PT / Monday, October 2, 2:59 a.m. ET

Good thing there is gyro. I wonder if it's a good implementation. Too bad I don't have a PS5 though so I can't try it out but something about it still looks off to me.

I just played through the training stage but there doesn’t seem to be anyone playing in Australia because I can’t find a match

Lobbing snowballs at someone half blind over a foam dune is not that easy for me. This is pretty fun, though.

Visually it's a cluster fuck. But it kind of seems okay because you are tromping around in mountains of this shit and it's flying everywhere. You get cut off from seeing the state of the terrain behind any big mound that forms.

The surfing control is simple but set up well. Turning is very quick but they got a little carving feeling in there so it's fun to swish around.

What time is it?
Feels like it takes too much time for your foam to paint the ground once your projectile lands. Accumulation is a nice touch. Not really digging the aesthetic as it feels like it is going for the vibe of something establish but ends up feeling rather flat and generic.

I don't understand why "free" games with microtransactions do not require a Plus subscription. They are "free to play", so suddenly there is no cost of running the servers? They no longer need to contribute to "bringing high-quality games and value-added benefits"?

It's a compromise Sony et al. are making. If they were to paywall free-to-play games, they'd torpedo the whole business model of these games. They finance the operating costs with the microtransactions (at least that's the hope).

Or is it just one of Phil's balls in my throat?

I wanna try it just to see the trainwreck myself

It’s easy. The more players, the more money can be earned on microtransactions.

Microtransactions. It's why 'free games' like Fortnite, do exponentially more business than most full priced retail games.

This doesn't explain why full-priced games with microtransactions (e.g. Diablo 4, Gran Turismo 7) still require a PlayStation Plus subscription.
Because most full priced games like GT7 are not designed around MTX to make money. F2P entire business model is about selling MTX.

When Sony made the PS+ mandatory for online gaming they decided that F2P games should remain free, otherwise defeated the porpose of a "Free to Play" game. Also games that already charge you a subscription, like FF14, dont need a PS+ subscription to play.

Those examples aren't free to play games though. They have a very different model, the F2P games' entire revenue model is around MTX.

Both XB and PS have the policy that if a game is free to play, it should not need PS+ or Live to play its online features, but if it's a paid product, you need the sub.

Because they want to have their cake and eat it too.

There’s also the fact that far more work and money went into making Gran Turismo and Diablo, than your run of mill simple ftp game like Foam Stars.

Something like gran Turismo has pretty unintrusive mtx. Compare to Warframe where its like 2/3 store and 1/3 game.
