"Sony has thrown shade at Microsoft’s attempts to increase its stable of first party developers, with CEO Jim Ryan claiming that PlayStation studios are, ‘the fruit of, not massive spending sprees, but of very, very steadily, carefully planned organic growth’.

Organic growth?

The only grassroots Sony studios making big games are PD with Gran Turismo and Sony Santa Monica with God of War.

Every other big franchise comes from a studio they bought the past.

ND
Media Molecule
Guerrilla
Insomniac
Sucker Punch
And not that long ago Evolution for racing games

Yes, clearly no difference between those and Bethesda

It doesn't even matter if the growth of a gaming platform is "ORGANIC" or INORGANIC or VEGAN or FREE RANGE or ANTI-BIOTIC FREE or meatless, ffs he's just going with the latest hipster buzz words to get their dickys up.

As long as companies produce good content, it doesn't matter how long it took you to build your 1st parties.

Those can still be considered "carefully planned organic growth’.

In many of those cases, before buying Sony had a very close relationship supporting those studios, financing their games and so on. In all those cases the acquisition was the natural next step on a long line of events.

When MS acquired the gears franchise, noobody felt it was in a "shopping spree".... right now things look a bit different, tbh.

Ah yes. We can thank him for mass erections. They should put this warning in the beginning of every game.

"Stop playing and seek medical attention if erections last longer than 4 hours"

Yep, Sony definitely won't be able to compete with MS's output this gen. Them buying year-long exclusivity like crazy didn't pan out at all.
We don't need to take out our balls of crystal, lets just wait and see how everything unfolds, who really knows, an EMP might hit and we'll be left staring at our boxes wondering how to survive.
Sony might buy something neat, hell Nintendo... I can't even type that Nintendo might change it's game and start smartening the fuck up... that's just too funny.

Anyway what WILL happen for 100% sure is people will press buttons on their respective controllers and have fun, and that's all that really matters.

they already had an amazing relationship previously so it's not like buying and one day later they make a hit.

Microsoft also had a very good working relationship with Bethesda. Oblivion was a timed xbox exclusive and worked much better on the 360 than PS3. They've always worked well together. Now of course, nobody said they had to go out and buy the whole damn publisher...but that what you do when you want to compete and time is a factor.

EDIT:
I should add that it's the smarter thing to do as well. Imagine if you had to make a studio from scratch (which they are doing with The Initiative). It's a high risk potentially low reward situation. The studio could flop their first game. The what, Microsoft goes back to the drawing board. I think they got tired of people saying they have no games, so they did something about it. In the fastest, most impactful way possible. Even then we still gotta wait for the final agreements to be honored and so the upcoming games will go to other platforms most likely, but they laid the foundation to begin making some really great experiences for their fans.

How can you blame them for trying to thrive?

Yup thats what you do when in a shopping spree.

By "good relations" we mean shared IPs, financing a small studio to medium/large size, technological help, etc. Not buying some timed exclusivity of a stabilished IP.

A very good parallel is the aquisition of the forza horizon studio. They developed only for MS using a MS IP and probally got a lot of incentives to start with.... that aquisition is pretty much organic growth in my book.

So you have a problem with them acquiring Zenimax, but not Playground Games? Because of the difference between one studio making multiplats and one making exclusives.

I personally don't think it matters. If you have a good working relationship, why does it matter that the studio has made games for another platform. That shouldn't even be part of the criteria to decide whether to purchase a studio or not.

Its business. You do what you can to improve your company and if it hurts your competition so much the better.

I dont have a problem with either, i`m just talking about what could be considered organic growth.

Natural aquisitions have a much higher chance of sucess. Playground games will be much easier to integrate than bethesda.

One is just a natural step while the other is a gigantic culture shift. Dont be surprised if over time a lot of good people leave. Not that i care, just talking about the business side. Historically big aquisitions have a much higher chance of failure than sucess.

What a hypocritical statement from Sony. I was an Amiga user and I witness Sony's Psygnosis buyout.

Didn't sony *just* buy Insomniac? They also bought most of their other first party studios, like guerrilla, media molecule, naughty dog, etc.
