(CNN) -- A vacation cruise aboard the Carnival Dream in the Caribbean became a nightmare for some passengers, a month after a fire crippled another Carnival ship in the Gulf of Mexico.

Several passengers aboard the Dream contacted CNN, telling stories of power outages and overflowing toilets, all while docked in port at Philipsburg, St. Maarten, in the eastern Caribbean.

"We are not allowed off of the boat despite the fact that we have no way to use the restrooms on board," Jonathan Evans of Reidsville, North Carolina, said in an e-mail early Thursday. "The cruise director is giving passengers very limited information and tons of empty promises. What was supposed to take a hour has turned into 7-plus hours."

Carnival, in a statement, said the ship never lost power, "but there were periodic interruptions to elevators and toilets for a few hours last night. However, at this time all hotel systems are functioning normally and have been functional since approximately 12:30 a.m."

The ship has full power, but remains at dock while personnel work on "the technical issue," the company said in the statement on its Facebook page.

The Dream, based in Port Canaveral, Florida, was on a seven-day cruise.
It was scheduled to leave port around 5 p.m. ET Wednesday.

The U.S. Coast Guard said Thursday it was notified by Carnival that the Dream was experiencing generator issues. Carnival has not requested assistance from the Coast Guard, which has no jurisdiction in the ship's current location, Coast Guard Petty Officer Jon-Paul Rios told CNN.

The vessel's emergency generator has failed, Coast Guard Petty Officer Mark Barney said. The emergency generator powers propulsion for the ship, Barney explained.
The U.S. Coast Guard Sector Command Center is in direct communication with the captain of the Carnival Dream, Barney said, adding that the captain reports that the ship's main generator and sewage system are currently functioning and are not affected by the emergency generator failure.

Gregg Stark, who is traveling with his wife and two young children, told CNN, "There's human waste all over the floor in some of the bathrooms and they're overflowing -- and in the state rooms. The elevators have not been working. They've been turning them on and off, on and off."
An announcement over the ship's public address system said the crew was trying to fix the problem and was working on the generators, according to Stark. A few hours later, another announcement was made, saying the problem was worse than originally believed.

On Wednesday night, despite complaints coming in to CNN, Carnival representative Vance Gulliksen said he wasn't aware of a problem. Several subsequent calls to the cruise line went unanswered.

The Dream, which can carry more than 5,000 passengers and crew, sailed from Port Canaveral on Saturday.

Last month, an engine room fire left the Carnival Triumph crippled and adrift in the Gulf of Mexico with more than 4,200 people aboard.

The scheduled four-day cruise stretched into eight days as tugs pulled the vessel into port in Alabama. Food was scarce and passengers sweltered in the heat with no air conditioning. People aboard also reported overflowing toilets and human waste running down the walls in some parts of the ship.

A class action lawsuit was filed against Carnival Corporation in the aftermath.

Man, we are supposed to go on a Carnival cruise in July.

2 of these mishaps only provide me with more fuel to get out of going. I hate cruises.

Keep fucking up Carnival. Should be called a Circus.

Get a cabin near the life boats and be prepared to fight off the dirty underclass during their attempt to come topside.

I've been on 6+ cruises and I can safely say after ONE cruise on Carnival...never again. Spend the extra money to try Princess/NCL/Royal etc.

I hear Princess is awful as well, thanks to the super cheap way they are run. Paper plates, servers pouring unfinished cups of water back into their pitchers, and so on.

QFT.
12 years ago I went on a Carnival Cruise and it was great. I went a year ago and it totally changed. It became the "Macdonalds" of cruise lines. Shitty food, boring entertainment and always overcrowded. Perhaps I just had back luck but even the people we shared the dinner table with were lame. "Steak? bah, I just wish they had Burger King on the ship"..

I'll mention that to my parents. They used Carnival last year and I know they plan on going on another cruise sometime this year.

My first experience on a cruise was a great one. Took a western Caribbean trip on Royal Caribbean. Loved every minute of it!

Yep. Same here. My first cruise on was on Royal's Freedom to the eastern caribbean. I had a blast, and I ended up going again two years later on the same ship again on the same route. This October I am going on Freedom, but to the Western Caribbean. So excited.

Damn. I went on Carnival a few years ago and it was pretty awesome. I went on NCL last week, and it was more catered towards families (though still fun, mind you - but the pickings weren't as plentiful for us single men), so we were going to do Carnival again for the next cruise. After these two stories, I'm not so sure about that.

How's Royal Caribbean?

RC was fun. Didn't notice any problems. Went up the Northeastern seaboard and had a great time. Better than visitig the Caribbean in many ways.

I did my first carnival cruise last month.

never again.

it wasn't horrible but the ship felt overcrowded. I'll stick with princess or rccl next time. My last cruise on princess was amazing.
