Paradox aquires White Wolf from CCP

As long as the game doesn't play out like a Telltale game does... I'd like to see builds accounted for in dialogue like in Bloodlines even if we get a game without explicit combat. And branching paths that actually branch, rather than having to choose a character's fate only to have them die anyway next episode.
Maybe they should hire some japanese Visual Novel makers :D

I was more imagining a narrative driven game that fleshes out certain canon characters. Take Smiling Jack for example. He has somewhat of a background in the universe, but it's just a framework. It can be built upon to tell interesting history or stories. So 'Builds' don't really come into play since you'd be playing as Brujah pirate (assuming you go back to when he was first embraced).

Does anyone think we should have a WoD community thread? I didn't think it was that popular here, but this thread's (gladly) proven me wrong.

It can't hurt to have one.

Onyx Path Publishing has a blog post up from Monday, talking about the acquisition and what it means for them.

TL;DR - Currently business as usual, they're meeting with the new head of White Wolf Publishing, Tobias Sjögren, later this week.
I hope they are integrated into the new White Wolf. They seem to value their independence, but it still sounds like they want to be real White Wolf again.

That would be cool. It's my favorite game universe and I always like to find others who enjoy it.

I hope Paradox does good and honors the deals CCP had with OPP. Without what they've been doing for the last few years I don't think the purchase of this IP would have been worth what it is. It'd be even better if they could pull them into a bigger role in developing the universe further.

It seems like Onyx is still in the dark about what's going to happen.

As to be expected in this point. They're a third party when the two main ones are still working out all the dealings. I suspect they'll be among the first to engage in talks with Paradox as soon as the transition of the IP is settled.

YAASSSS

It's not your fault that OT buried your last few threads on WoD topics. A community thread would probably stay buoyant for longer.

RPS: White Wolf Interview: “There Have Not Been Enough Video Games Set In The World Of Darkness”

Few interesting details about the acquisition although they can't really talk specifics regarding future plans and development.

RPS: As I understand it, White Wolf is a ‘daughter company’ to Paradox rather than a fully incorporated part of your Paradox holdings. Does that mean you will be free to work with other publishers with your guidance?

Sjögren: Yes! The logics behind that is simple. Like most publishers out there Paradox is specialised and does certain types of games better than anyone else.

But if there is a publisher that is a better fit than Paradox for a product that White Wolf would like to license, we are definitely set to do the deal with that publisher. White Wolf is here to do what is best for Exalted and World of Darkness and the fans who love these properties.

Oh, somebody is going to be upset:
Products wise we’ll talk about what we can do when we have concrete things to show. On the more general level we will roll out a powerful and provocative contemporary storyline, making sure there is a singular World of Darkness story that is easy to get into for neonates but builds on and deepens the universe that elder fans love.

Heh, they used one of my favorite Mage covers for the article.

They seem to take it in a good direction. They also split nWOD into its own thing, called Chronicles of Darkness , which is an excellent move for both worlds

EDIT: Heh, I just noticed my last reply in this thread was:
I really wish they give oWOD and nWOD some better names to avoid confusion, especially now that they exist side by side.

Man, now that's a dream. I'd imagine it's too niche for anyone to try and grow into something like WoD. And if we're talking video games, I don't know how that would even work! Maybe as a sort of point and click game? Man, I'd live for someone to tackle this just to see what could be done.

Obsidian could probably put something together like they did with the Planescape setting back in the day. Just focus more on the setting-story-dialog and less on the rest.

it's entirely possible that they could have one core team focused on tyranny and then another, with Tim Cain/Leonard heading it, focused on concepting and starting development on a new Vampire: TM game.

I mean, it would be borderline crazy NOT to. Vampire: TMB is regarded as one of the best rpgs of all time now and almost any forum you even bring it up people flock to talk about how awesome and great it is and how they wish there was something else like it.

For Paradox to have such a close relationship to Obsidian who has two of the main trokia guys there it'd be an extreme missed opportunity to not do that. I mean it's the most well-known "White wolf" video game out there now.

Really? What happened?

They clearly parted on bad terms. Neither side will say much directly but Avellone has made some comments about development styles that implies that he doesn't agree with Obsidian's direction. It also seems like Obsidian canceled a few games that were dear to Avellone.

Bought Bloodlines from the steam sale, enjoying it.

Any games or anything announced from this yet?

Gonna be years out. They're revamping the actual tabletop games first to modernize them, implement their own take on the setting, etc. before they actually turn it into digital content.
