Exactly. Sometimes the cold hard trough of Techjesus is a bitter pill to swallow but if i damn well trust him.

PS: Amazon still not shipped the card. Delivery was pushed back again to tomorrow evening. On the other would i suspect that they would have canceled the order by now if something was faulty. :/

Who keeps a GPU for 7 years??? Most people on this forum will struggle to keep the card for 2 years lol
You would be surprised how many people still game on something like GTX 780 or 980. Personally I like to buy new PC every 5 years.

to be clear I don't want to advocate anything that's illegal. As I understand eBay, and I don't understand it very well, when you pay for something that money stays in escrow until you receive the item you won or purchased. Once eBay gets a confirmation of that then they release the money to the seller after X amount of hours or so. Again my understanding of things is vague but if you open up a return or dispute a charge or something, the money is going to stay in escrow while the dispute is pending, long enough for you to call your credit card to company and try to get a charge back. eBay absolutely favors buyers. They don't release the money to the seller until the transaction is complete or if the return is in progress and then complete, back to the buyer. If you do get the charge back, you get both the card and the money back. Close down your accounts and never speak of it again.

Not exactly the most legal or ethical thing, but honestly, fuck you assholes out there with your bullshit bots and your garbage eBay accounts. No one's buying your dumb fucking shit for $10,000 more than it's worth. You have it coming and maybe someone has the stones to do it.

They need to remove the ability for people to sell things like GPU's that they don't even physically have or own yet. They should also be super restricted for up to a month. So if the scumbags buy 20 of them and sell them all for $1200+. Well. Good luck. Because that way they give the scalpers the time to do their immoral bullshit, and then they can release the second batch of cards with a proper captcha.

I feel like this would destroy the scalper market and eBay would never let this happen. Muh Commission.

20GB 3080 cards are coming along with 16GB 3070's:

Yesterdays joke of a "launch" was a blessing. I'll wait for the 20GB version.

Well hot damn. Maybe this was all a blessing in disguise.

This is said every time. "Just you wait, AMD is going to kill it this time".

They won't. I hope they do. I miss the days when I could buy a 4870 and compete with Nvidia. Unfortunately that was over a decade ago. Ever since it's been a series of disappointments. I'm not holding my breath.

I'm afraid it'll rival the 3070/3070ti at best.

It's shady to release VRAM-deprived SKUs but then release corresponding SKUs with twice the VRAM soon after. I guess Nvidia knows that a lot of people will double-dip by buying the 8GB 3070 and the 10GB 3080 but then dump them on ebay when the respective 16GB and 20GB SKUs are released.

And this explains why Gigabyte delayed the release of the Aorus Master and Elite.

That was my last AMD card incidentally.

Ah ok. What is your dreamcard then? :D im back on the "best bang for the buck" train so 1000€ just for a GPU is waaaayyy too much for me. (instead i try to budget a new OLED to replace my B7)

Honestly the 3080 performance is bang on for me at the moment, it's just the vram and the fact that most cards are ugly as sin that are the downsides for me. But for $700 I can justify the compromises.

one of my laptops has a 980m and it runs most of the games i play really well, but it's held back by a 60Hz panel so that's really why I don't use it anymore.

How is it possible to screw up a launch surrounding something that actually is a pretty good product in itself.. If this launch and release doesn't brew a backlash in tech news with a series of tough question for Nvidia and AIB partners about how they operate (if the 20GB versions leak is true, that alone should be enough to set off red flags everywhere), I don't know what will..

The leak is true. Gigabyte delayed their entire high end lineup, the Aorus Elite and Master...so what does that tell you?

Yesterday I briefly jumped on the 3080 hype train, and thought it might be nice to have a few more frames at 4K - but today, having sobered up, I can see that the purchase wouldn’t be worth it.

If you’re gaming at 4K on a 2080TI obviously it makes sense to keep that card. If you skipped the 20XX cards and have been waiting for the 3080, then yeah, I can see how you’d be pissed right now.

But if you already own a 2080TI there’s nothing to be miserable about. Two weeks ago 2080TI owners were being laughed at - not so much today. The truth is the 2080 TI (being my first single card solution in a decade - I used to run SLI setups) is proving to be one of the best GPUs I’ve ever owned.

Wise words from Tech Jesus.

Edit: Sorry for replacing all the text in this edit, but fuck it: I'm postponing (and cancelling orders) all of my plans until ~November or so when we'll basically have all the information available (including RDN2, which I will not buy anyway because the he Reverb G2 "needs" DLSS) and stocks are plentiful. I have more than enough stuff to play on my old card in the meantime anyway.

Maybe all of this actually is a blessing..

The 2000 Series in itself is not a bad series in terms of performance. It's bad in terms of price to performance.
The internet didn't laugh at 2080ti owners in general, just at those that, despite knowing of the reveal etc. chose to shelve out 1400€ or more for new or even used 2080tis so shortly before 3000 Series announcement.
And yes, everyone who bought a high end 2000 series GPU recently made a very poor decision.

You vastly overestimate how many people even know what video card is in their computer.

NEOGaf is a hardcore forum, and lots of people here are still using the 7 series. The average person is not a hardcore gamer. Even fewer are hardcore PC gamers. Even fewer are hardcore PC gamers who really care about the latest and greatest in GPU tech.

It has been 3 years since I bought a GPU, and I'll probably wait until next year.

I want the 3080 because the 1080TI, while a legendary card, is not quite there for 4K/60fps on newer games. It looks like the 3080 can hit that mark.

They're all sold out anyway. There once was a time when I would have been mad about this (and the PS5 debacle) but there are bigger fish to fry. These days I don't really expect to get hyped tech on day one, ever.

Well they cancelled my order. Said yes you paid for it and we confirmed it to you but boo hoo, there are no cards available so go fuck yourself. Managed to place and order at the other place - email confirmation and all, but got a call from them too saying that no, sorry we don't have anything. This is a true shitshow, do these cards even exist?

I bought a monitor that is g-sync compatible with the intention of using it, but i don't. I don't use it because I generally go for locked framerates, making g-sync useless.

The video above say that stocks right now is about 5% of what they will be in November. "Already" during October it will get much better. So there's hope unless you need it like right now.

Well, it seems the right star will be the month of October at least. Thanks guys, I'll just sit tight here then, the buyer for my 2080s said he will wait too... great I guess.

I am quite aware that every single time every AMD fan says that AMD will catch up this time and everyone ends up disappointed. But in most of those cases the leaks prior to launch suggested mediocre performance, but people chose to believe it would be better anyway...
Right now, the worst case leak is that the AMD cards will fall somewhere between the RTX 3070 and the RTX 3080. Is that a card that should immediately be dismissed? I guess you didn't bother to check the thread, so I'll recap it here...

  • An AMD card gave the result of being 17% faster than a 2080Ti in a VR Benchmark leak. This was over 7 months ago, meaning things should have improved compared to back then. And if they haven't, it falls exactly in line with the above.
  • We have the XSX specs on the APU and PSU, which give a good indication on power draw for a GPU larger than the 5700XT.
  • We have the PS5 which gives a good indication on clocks.

The 5700XT was a good card for what it offered. Power consumption and clocks were its main issue, and if the consoles indicate anything, those issue have been remedied quite a bit.

The bottom line is... One has to be particularly pessimistic to believe AMD's best can't come close to an RTX 3080. Especially after it has become quite clear that the RTX 3080 performance was exaggerated in their marketing material.

There is the factor that they might prefer put their resources into CPUs rather than graphics, since that's more profitable for them, and still ditching the high end for GPUs, but that's another story.

"lots" is not most. We are the hardcore and the thirst is real. 7 years is still too long.

More than one of my mates are still rocking a 970, it's still a decent card at 1080p.
My buddy had a 980ti in his rig. Which he then proceeded to fry a few weeks ago. I told him already I'd give him my 1080ti when I get a new card, but he's now stuck using my old 770 I had to dig out the closet. He just keeps regressing.

How recent?

I bought my FE 2080 TI day one and have used it almost ever single day for at least an hour or two per day. So I’ve gotten great usage from this card. But even if someone had purchased a 2080 TI, say, this summer, it’s not really my place to say they made a poor decision.

Some people just have lots of money. Others might be running out of time. Not everyone’s in the same boat. I’ve made purchases in my life for things that I knew were wildly over-priced, but my decision to make the purchase wasn’t based on the cost, but rather on the circumstances of the time. For example, a few years ago a close relative of mine was dying, and I made purchases for this person without any thought to the cost.

Sometimes it’s not about cost, but about something else.

I agree though that if you don’t have much money, and you just didn’t bother to research this, then yeah you probably made a bad decision - but even then.... will the 3080 be widely available for Cyberpunk, a game that many people are dying to play day one? Hey, you know what, if you already have a 2080 TI you’re good to go.

For some people spending money on gaming is never a bad thing,

Other than being filthy rich and having to have the latest and greatest, the 20xx series was a bad buy. The only reason I could see someone being okay with it is if they were starting over from scratch, brand spanking new and couldn't find a 1080ti. Which I find really hard to believe. Point is, the 2080ti is a great card, but a AWFUL AWFUL AWFUL value. Every reviewer said it at the time and especially in the last 3 months, if you were to buy one knowing that new cards are on the horizon, you only have yourself to blame for losing out on the value proposition of the new series. Again, it doesn't make the 2080ti a bad card in the slightest, as it's absolutely bomb.com, but the price is ludicrous for the small performance gain over the 1080ti. You could argue about it all day until your blue in the face but every reasonable reviewer and prosumer said the same thing from day 1.

And it sounds like the 3090 (which I haven't ruled out from buying yet) will be another 2080Ti in that regard. The atrocious price vs performance value is fine as long as people are aware and find other value in it.

BUT in the case of the 3090 you are getting a substantial improvement over the previous generation of cards within the same price range. The highest end have always been a poor value propisition until the 1080ti. The 3090 is replacing the TITAN, which when compared to the $2500-3000 Titan RTX, a $1500 3090 is actually a much better value proposition than the Titan RTX was for the 20xx series. 2080ti didn't do much more than what the 1080ti did, it was maybe a 25% at best upgrade which went away completely if you decided to use raytracing. DLSS 2.0 absolutely mitigated that a bit, but it's not widely supported enough to really be a factor either.

The 2070, 2070Super, and the 2080 where essentially within spitting distance of the 1080ti, to the point where we reviewers kept saying, "OK Nvidia we get it, you can make a 1080ti." So when the only card in your newest generation that beats your previous generation by an acceptable margin is $500 more in the same class, it's a failure. Nvidia might as well come out and said they knew they fucked up. The growth on the 20xx series was anemic compared to the 10xx series.

Expect around 20% more performance compared to the 3080. It is the same chip (GA102)... Just less cut down than the 3080.

A 1080 TI won’t do 4K. 3080s and 3090s won’t be widely available until next year.

A 2080 TI, bought this summer, means that, this summer, you were playing at 4K. It means you’ll be playing all those great Fall titles this Fall. I wonder how many people right now who were banking on the 3080 are wondering if they’ll have a 3080 for Cyberpunk - I’m willing to bet, a lot.

Also, for many people, saving a few hundred dollars here and there just isn’t that big of a deal when it comes to gaming. Gaming, for some people, is one of the most enjoyable things that they do.

All this value for money crap just isn’t a consideration for some.

I'd bet it's a more of a consideration than any other factor. It's why the xx60 series in any series tend to be the ones sold the most almost across the board for the last 8 years.

And the 1080ti was essentially the first feasable 4k card. I've been playing at 3440x1440 75+fps for the last 3 years or so and it's been great. I could go full 4k if I wanted to hook it up to my TV and lower a few settings, so I'm not sure what point your driving at other than you just trying to justify your 2080ti. Which again isn't a bad card, just a shitty value. And value proposition is absolutely what a solid 80% of GPU owners care about. You can argue that money and value isn't a consideration for some, and it may not be for some, but it is for most.

You could spend your money however you want, doesn't mean we all have to agree that it was a smart choice. And that's ok.

Agreed, that's my thinking as well when buying GPUs. Had I known what a pathetic mess the 3080 would be OC wise I'd have went for a 2080 Ti at launch, but the price/perf was wack & RTX seemed like a gimmick for the first few years until adoption picks up, so instead I waited... Would've preferred 2 extra years of 2080 Ti performance for $300-400 instead tbh.

Fuck them. If eBay actually gave a shit, they would've implemented something like this. They thrive off people trying to make a quick buck. I do like eBay, but still. Love that people are fucking with scalpers by putting in 20k bids and then trying to outbid themselves to make the sale go longer.
eBay's survived for as long as it has because no one else wants that business. No one. It's a platform for garbage users to peddle trash. Has it even changed aesthetically since 2003?

And I constantly wonder how they get away with facilitating Consumer Sales Practices Violations. You'd think all the price gouging would attract some regulatory attention, but it never does. I guess it's more important to make sure I wear a mask in the gym lobby.
