Rumor Nintendo Switch Pro to Support 720p 120 FPS in Portable Mode 1440p 30 FPS in Docked Mode

Nvidia says otherwise:

"One Network For All Games - The original DLSS required training the AI network for each new game. DLSS 2.0 trains using non-game-specific content, delivering a generalized network that works across games. This means faster game integrations, and ultimately more DLSS games."

Basically Nintendo and any devs working on support for Switch Pro can just use NVidia's tech to add that support across all games that will run on Switch Pro. DLSS 2.0 isn't game specific, it works on general game code.
If it was that easy then every PC game would have DLSS support when 2.0 came out and they don't. More and more do of course but not every single one.

It's down to the developers to implement it into their development, but going by NVidia's comments it doesn't need to be on a per game basis, so I'm not sure exactly what it entails.
Originally with 1.0 they had to run each game through their AI Network to analyse perfect rendered frames, to piece together the information needed to upscale and that wasn't perfect.

I will say that Nintendo doesn't have to support every game around, the showcase titles at least to show why Switch Pro is better than the regular Switch.
Presumably Nintendo would have NVidia run a bunch of games and generally train the feature to work on Switch Pro, otherwise there's no point having it on the system.

call me crazy but i would expect 1080p with 60fps handheld.
1440p 0r 1840p, 60 fps on docked.

120fps on handheld mode.?wtf!?

Hmm, not bad per se don't know why people are bitching about it, they are too dense to not know that the Switch is a damn handheld first and foremost not no damn console itself now I do think the performances are way off but I could be wrong now if it does get able to run at 120fps, the batter BETTER be good because games won't even last a damn hour with that.

Damn Nintendo we can’t get 60FPS 4K docked for at least the first party games? Y’all gonna give us 30? Smh. Hopefully not true my Nintendo love can’t handle it.

I think because it makes no sense. As others have pointed out, 720p×120 is exactly the same number of pixels as 1440p×30, which would mean no power difference or performance advantage between docked and handheld.

I don't think most people are complaining about the power (yet), but the utilization.

I always lower the expectations when it comes to Nintendo Hardware, but I'm not sure how lower I can go. Can we go much lower? or is it just a case of: take whatever they give you. Would be funny if Valve announced their Steam boy and it was a killer system spec wise.

But it's about the games, in all seriousness. Any increase to Switch beyond a base switch should be fine. We have to stop comparing hardware to the competition, that boat has long since sailed.

120fps, Nintendo? Never. It's BS.
60fps to 120fps it's like 1440p->4K = waste of resources because of diminishing returns. 60fps is optimal.
Glad to be wrong of course.
Nintendo has always been high frame rate andy's tho. Their games aren't always very demanding but they like them looking polished.
the 1440p 30 doesn't make sense, I think DLSS turns on and makes 1440p60 into 4k 60

This is exactly the kind of oddball thing Nintendo would do, look over here, 120hz 720p gaming. Hopefully the 1440p thing is wrong, would much rather see 1080p with dlss to whatever at 60hz.

"According to the latest rumors coming out of Taiwan, the Nintendo Switch Pro will run at a resolution of 720p 120 FPS in portable mode, with docked mode optimized for 1440p 30 FPS. The GPU will be based on NVIDIA’s latest graphics architecture (Ampere or the upcoming Lovelace?), fabbed on TSMC’s 7nm class node with the chipset potentially leveraging a Samsung node.

The GPU core will supposedly run at around 1 GHz (base clock) while the vanilla Switch runs at 768 MHz. Quite frankly, this sounds a bit underwhelming as the latter is based on a fairly dated process. TSMC’s 7nm/6nm nodes should be capable of much higher frequencies.

It’s unclear whether the SKU will come with NVIDIA’s RTCores for ray-tracing but support for DLSS is almost confirmed which means we’ll see Tensor cores on-die. Third-party developers have reportedly already received dev-kits for the new console."
Sounds dated 🤣 sounds like Nintendo !

Maybe those 120hz are like the 8K of PS5, something we never will see in a non indie game.

So you're expecting XSX/PS5 tier performance when docked and XSS tier performance in handheld mode? Yep, you're crazy :messenger_tongue:

If they want to make a resolution/framerate 'improvement', I think 1080p 60fps handheld and 4K 60fps docked would make more sense.
Physics are a thing lmao. Blows my mind that people expect a 100 watt console performance (XSS) in a handheld.

I see a lot of people doubt 120Hz in handheld mode, but bare in mind we already have that on mobile phones. Mobile games, and most of Nintendo's output, isn't really that CPU demanding.

So you're expecting XSX/PS5 tier performance when docked and XSS tier performance in handheld mode? Yep, you're crazy :messenger_tongue:

Resolution/framerate =/= graphics. So while the performance can be indeed on par with PS5/XSX, the visuals will be a few generations behind.

Who really knows what the hell Nintendo are/are not doing with Switch but I'm just going to assume the original rumour from 2? years ago talking about a Switch x2 using a Tegra X2 that simply doubled power for the same watts and doubled RAM. That would be very Nintendo for me.

It was a long time ago so maybe they changed again but who knows...

Makes no sense to push resolution so high if it means the games will look like PS3 games. The less details you have the lower the resolution can be.

120fps is very unlikely performance wise, phones which have a 120hz mode also use much more battery which makes this even more unlikely.

That is not the case at all… in dock it will still use higher frequencies.

The rumor is just baseless… and because it is make up the “creator” didn’t thought about make the specs reliable.

The Switch doesnt use higher frequencies in handheld because it uses too much energy. I am not arguing that the rumor is true or not but your argument isnt grounded.

Not sure their watt performance, but there are any phones and tablets offering 1080p 60fps and beyond. Some even 4K.
No there aren't. Most mobile games run at or around 720p, often much lower. And most of them are locked to 30 fps. And most of them look like PS3 games at best. You can't beat physics.

That's true, but the problem is that many people already have 4K TV, so the consoles have to adapt to it regardless, 900-1080p simply won't cut it. And the 4K res will supposedly be handled by DLSS anyway, so all the additional power Pro will have will be used for better visuals. Honestly, if NSW Pro offers something like this:

It's safe to say no one would complain, to say the elast.

Essentially confirming "we banned Pascal from it for greed reasons".

And before green bitching about "tensor cores" comes: it is simply bunch of FPs, bitches, and even 1060 will wipe the floor with "switch pro" chip, regardless of counting in "tensor core" fp.

To be honest i would rather have 1080p/60fps. I play Nintendo Switch because of gameplay not graphics or resolution

120 fps in handheld mode makes no sense. Waste of resources and battery. So this is a lot of BS.

Not that it wouldn't be great to have a 120Hz screen, but you're dealing with a gaming console in handheld mode so you need to balance where you want to spend energy.

And it wouldn't be on having a 120 fps game. At most 60fps on 720p. I don't expect that to change anytime soon on "Switch Pro" and neither in a future successor "Switch 2".

The reason why the OG switch was more powerful in docked was because of battery life. That my no longer be the case with the switch Pro.
But it makes no sense because you are running at 120fps handheld. What would that be saving if you are outputting the same amount of pixels per second AND everything has to finish that much faster? Why 120fps in handheld mode?

720p 120fps = 110.592.000 pixels per second
1440p 30fps = 110.592.000 pixels per second

That means there is no difference in terms of power/performance between Portable and Docked.

Something is wrong here.
You're right. Just the CPU must be 4x faster in mobile mode ... does not make sense at all.

But maybe it just has a 120Hz display (like smartphones have these days).

Lastly, it’s expected that Microsoft’s Xbox Game Pass for the Switch will be launched alongside the Switch Pro in the latter half of this year.
I’m sorry… what?!

?

Switch uses different frequencies docked and undocked.
That won’t change with any new Switch.

Hell even notebooks, tablets or cellphones uses different frequencies plugged and unplugged.

What are you talking about?

Rumors rumors! Right now on this laptop with a 1660ti on battery power I'm getting 720p/30fps with medium settings, plugged into the wall gets 1080p/60fps/max settings. Good luck on that 120fps switch! Maybe with n64 games.

Agreed. 120fps is silly.

I think people hoping for 4K in a Switch Pro are going to be disappointed. It’s just going to be a small upgrade like the New 3DS. The real questions are if they’ll make the new hardware mandatory for some newer games like the N3DS, and how much it’ll be.

If they don’t drop the old Switch’s price and make the new one the $300 sku, then I personally won’t find it worth it. I’ll just try and find a cheap Switch lite when/if MP4 is out.
