The thing is, besides Mortal Kombat, they are not actually getting that many franchises, unless they plan to reboot abunch of defunct Midway IP. Batman and lego are licenced properties. By buying publishers MS is opening pandoras box here with repercussions. Sony doesnt have as much cash on hand but they have enough to go after a major publisher if they needed to, same with nintendo.

This reads like fanboy wishful thinking. Major publishers aren't randomly up for bids, and most if not all of them are too large for acquisition or owned by a parent company.

Problem is this would undermine their whole Xbox business and would really show a lack of confidence in their own product if they launch their games on their competitor's consoles.

Mine Craft made sense because it was already available everywhere and wasn't really a game that would push hardware sales.

Xbox isn’t the console though, it’s a service that being said I can see MK12 being exclusive and (I know IP would have to be re-licensed) Lego being multi-platform.

Is there a list of all the studios that would come with this?

Edit found the list.

With gamepass being their focus, this is a package that would be hard to ignore. Even without the licences.

Some of the smaller TT studios in the UK could either be consolidated, or kept small and used as support or used to make smaller AA games. Likewise for some of the WB studios in the US.

Mad Max , The Matrix , Batman , Harry Potter , Lord of The Rings , Dying Light , Mortal Kombat and others

Of that list WB only OWN Batman (and other DC properties) and Mortal Kombat. The DC rights would not be sold, only licensed.

Mad Max is owned by George Miller and Byron Kennedy.
The Matrix is owned by the Wachowski Sisters
Harry Potter is owned by JK Rowling
Lord of the Rings is owned by the Tolkien estate
Dying Light is owned by Techland, WB only published it.

Honestly, apart from batman and MK, none of those franchises have really set the world alight in video game form.

The studios could easily be put to work on their own new I.Ps.

Just that 4bn is quite a lot, when the talent could just up and leave. It would be interesting to know just which franchises would come with the purchase

Phil said he wanted the next Xbox show to be full of mic drops.
If they ink such a deal for WB it simply would be a masterstroke of epic proportions.
I agree, thos would be a mega mic drop.

I just doubt, unless a deal had already been struck, itd be ready anytime soon. Two behemoths making a deal is complex and will take some time.

But, hell's yeah, that's a few mics to be dropped.

Yep i would imagine this would take months on negotiations and both sides getting approvals from those the right people. Then legal im sure would be complex as hell being a multinational deal. So can Microsoft use their over seas money hoard for this since it is a multinational deal?

What happened to "Exclusives Are Bad"? Or does that only apply when it's not your system of choice getting them? Like I said before, I don't view any of these as system sellers (TO ME). The Batman combat/system/open world thing is done in everything now, and I'd take SF over MK every day of the week. If I buy an Xbox down the road maybe I buy these cheap and used, but these aren't the types of titles to help sway somebody on the fence.

Buying a studio, is buying a studio. You own it. How would you have it, MS buys studios but dont keep any of their games exclusive for themselves?

When Sony bought insomniac, i didnt see anyone complain about that.

I say this one balances out the exclusives if it worked and there is still PC for those who refuse to get an xbox its not land locked. Sony needs competition as of now they are ready to steamroll to another easy demolition of the competition. We lost Nintendo already don't need to lose Microsoft if they are blown out again and don't make enough money. Monopolies are bad for consumers.

Exactly.

if Phil were to convince Satya to spend $4 billion he needs to show a stellar return. As I said a few pages back the numbers don’t add up.

Did anyone complain when Microsoft bought Playground, or Undead, or Compulsion or or Ninja Theory, or Double Fine or inXile? No, it was a resounding, meh. . Maybe a little whinging with Obsidian and a lot of discussion around Mojang.

Why arent they in the bidding war, then? Especially Sony. Ill tell you why; if Sony were to even show a modicum of interest in this deal, MS would go all out in order to outbid them. Neither Sony nor Nintendo have the balls to step into this arena as they simply couldn't afford to. Thats why you dont see their names on the list of interested parties.

Neither are Microsoft on that list, that’s only forum speculation

You know that the only credible reports on this deal list the interested parties as Take-Two Interactive, Electronic Arts and Activision Blizzard, right?

First you're coming up with all kinds of scenarios why MS wont do the deal. And if they do the deal, they licenses wont be a part of it. Now you're changing tactics and saying they arent even in the ring!

Batman being one of the most recognizable and biggest franchises on the planet Earth and all. No way ANYONE on the fence would think that Batman could be a system seller. But my god, BUGSNAX is really making it hard to resist that PSCinco.

And exclusives are bad. They suck, but MSoft at least put's their shit on PC which has the biggest consumer base on the planet. So even if they are console exclusive, they aren't excluding the billions of people that are on PC.

I don't get how so many people assume that the license aren't included in this deal, are people unaware that all these licenses are legally binding contracts that aren't void when they get bought out, unless there is a breach or one of the parties activates a release clause if there is one. I highly doubt these are license on a game by game bases for all these studios, but are either multi year or multi game contracts similarly to EA with the Star Wars license, which is expiring soon.

Disney bought the Star Wars IP for $4 Billion and people think MS isn't going to get exclusive gaming rights for WB franchises for $4 Billion if they end up purchasing them. You guys must think MS is real stupid or your valuations on WB studios are crazy high.

It’s been mentioned before, the only guaranteed IP from this 4 billion dollar deal is Mortal kombat. Batman, lego, and lotr are licensed IPs, the studios just happen to work on them. Maybe Sony doesn’t feel like mortal kombat is worth 4 billion to them? They’ve recently doubled up the size of at least 3 of their studios, have a good relationship with blue point, and Kojima productions. That’s almost what ms is getting here but for a fraction of the price.

The point I’m making here is that if Sony or Nintendo feel threatened by MS buying publishers they have the means to get in on it too. And that’s not good for anyone.

$4 Billion is a drop in the bucket for MS and worth every penny if and only if MS gets all the IP WB currently owns with it.

When you hear numbers like this, I still can't believe that guy let Minecraft go for only $2b. lol wtf

What other large publisher is up for sale?

MS is interested because WB & ATT are selling WB's gaming branch whether MS buys or not.

Who in their right minds wouldnt want juggernaut Ips and dev houses like RockSteady as part of their arsenal? Cant call it, breh. They can't afford a deal like this. They'd go bankrupt well before MS did just trying to keep up. No fanboy feelings. Just facts. And clearly they must have some idea of the risks involved or they wouldnt be interested in acquisition in the first place. Y'all make no sense. Just the fact that they are in the ring says........A LOT!

And before you say MS anything else, remember they spent 2 billion on Mojang just for Minecraft. This kind of deal is a no-brainer.

And not to mention they're interested in WB studios. WB owns every single one of those licenses. Why they wouldnt be part of the deal is beyond me.

I said it previously, MS "if" they purchased WB games would handle like a mix of what they did with Minecraft and more recent studios. Certain properties like a Mortal Kombat would likely stay as multiplatform. they 100% would look to negotiate to have Batman license included for 1 or 2 games exclusivity (See Sony Spiderman). Other studios likely would have their work in progress launch as is unless it was early enough to have it just go exclusive to Xbox and PC.

Bruh..... My guy keeps some WD40, peanut oil and Wesson oil on them goal post wheels! WTF?

As always you have it exactly backwards.

My first post in this thread ......

Warner Bros (though not the gaming division) is actually the owner of DC though so retaining the license for a period would reasonably be part of any deal.

I'm pretty sceptical on this though, I can’t find a single credible source (in the business media) to corroborate any interest from Microsoft.

And tbh I actually think it’ll be tough for AT&T to get a deal done on this for the whole gaming division at all - the asking price is too high and the business is not particularly consistent or profitable overall.

The situation with licenses is really quite clear. What is owned by WB (and would be retained by them), what is licensed from third parties and what is owned by WBIE is known and covered in earlier posts. Anything at odds with this is just fantasy stuff.

And I'll say it one last time for the hard of thinking. At the price stated the deal works, maybe, retaining this as a multi-platform publisher a la Mojang. But then again it’s pretty significantly overpriced when you break it down. As an exclusive gamepass content deal the numbers don’t work. Not even close.

It doesn’t matter how deep the pockets of Microsoft Corp. are, the only way Phil gets $4 billion from Uncle Satya is if he can demonstrate the appropriate ROI.

Phil already stated they are not looking to make future games on other consoles unless they are already under contract.
In other words, if they buy WBGS only games already in development for other platforms would release there but all new games would be Xbox Exclusive once those games are released.
Phil Ranks right under Satya Nadella these days so its not like he answers to anyone else.

Two things
1) If Microsoft are buying the studios they need the licensed IP (no point buying without getting licences as you have studios that have no IP of note, apart from Mortal Kombat, that have to make stuff from scratch and that takes time). The question with no IP is will staff stay with these studios after the buyout and can Microsoft accept waiting a number of years before it sees the fruits of the purchase?
2) the cost of buying with licences will likely force the studios to initially be multiplatform to recoup some of the cost. Because buying it with licences will be expensive as fuck. If they get a great deal on it, fair fucks.

Almost certainly staff would remain. Again, this is another MS. They give creative freedom and stability for their studios. They dont get involved with the creative process. As far as waiting for the fruits, this deal (if it happens) is a long game. No way they make this kind of purchase and expect it to pay off in the immediate future. Plus, it makes no sense to try and make any of the licenses multiplatform. They may as well let EA or Take Two have it if their going to just develop games for Sony and Nintendo anyway. That just weakens the band by publishing 3rd party games for your competition after spending $4 billion. What sense does that make?

I'm just saying that ms have always had the dosh to "crush" the opposition but they never have that's a fact and Wouldn't the Minecraft IP be bigger than any of the potential ip's available through this deal so yeah I agree the Minecraft deal was good for the money but when it comes to ms and Sony they both need different things at the moment to move forward I'd say Sony needs more online gaming in its stable I think they agree to as per the rumours of buy leyou .

I agree with half that if thet are spending that kind of coin it is to get people on the xbox, gamepass ecosystem. To buy these as multiplatform developer is bad investment they can invest in other more profitable ventures. This would be a want batman or mk there is only 1 console or ecosystem for that. Not to maybe make a few dollars to manage 1000s of employees across the world being a multiplatform publisher. They can let EA or ubisoft do that and continue to buy small studios

I don't know.

I mean... yes, franchises are interesting and IPs important.

Yet, recent history shown that you can create new IPs in a relatively short time: just three years ago Horizon: Zero Dawn wasn't even published and now its sequel is one of the most anticipated games on PS5.

I think that in this case buying studios and their talent-competence is more important and if you look at the gaming division of WB you it contains eleven studios, with some of them large enough to develop more games at once. Some of them are historic studios such as Traveller's Tales or Netherrealms and, given enough resources (Microsoft has them) they could become a powerhouse, especially if you have a service like Game Pass that you want to feed with enough original content.

Under this aspect it is a match made in heaven, so I would not be surprised if Microsoft would look for an agreement.

As per the iPS, just think at a Killer Instinct game developed by Netherrealm, at a possible Mortal Kombat VS Killer Instinct, at a Too Human game by Rocksteady (that setting is still in the hands of Microsoft and it is actually a very nice and original one...) or a new Kameo by Traveller's Tales...

And I could go on and on and on...

Yeah owning Rocksteady talent and Travellers Tales is probably the most important part.
Seems like big companies like MS, Google and Amazon just want to buy talent now, seems a bit...meh

R E A S O N S being is that having Ips like Batman, Harry Potter, Lord of the Rings, Mortal Kombat and Lego come with a huge fanbase installed. You make these titles exclusive to any one of the Big 3 and you increase your own fanbase substantially. In MSs case, these games would hit Gamepass for $14.99 a month to include Xcloud game streaming coming later this year. They'd boost that $10 million subs in no time. Sony and Nintendo see the huge potential here. I guarantee it.

Sony does need some competent multi player games though. I concur.

Sony and Nintendo have the money for a major publisher if they want/ need one.
Sony is not on the list interested in buying WB no matter how much you wish they were. I hope MS buys them because of people like you. You want to bash Xbox for not having exclusives, then whine when MS is in talks of acquiring WB Games. The downplaying is evident enough that some sony fans are really worried.

Hot take: Mr. Freeze was the only good boss fight ever produced by Rocksteady in a Batman game! Once acquired, MS needs to send these chumps back to Boss School or toss them onto the ash heap of history, like FASA, Digital Anvil, Ensemble, Lionhead, and Press Play (comedy option: Rare).
You clearly didnt experience the boss fight with KillerCroc. The salt is real here. I don't think people want to question Rocksteadys pedigree. It won't end well.

Maybe if Microssoft went halves with an interested publisher where certain IP is Xbox only and see if that works. It's multiplatform for the most part but you can prioritise certain IP and you share the cost of purchase.

Well they could try to get in on it, but if MS was determined to buy WB games they couldn't compete with MS.

As always you have it exactly backwards.

My first post in this thread ......

It's not about just Gamepass. It's about enticing customers to your platform/ecosystem. It's about standing out from the competition. Clearly, MS see's Xbox/Gamepass as a long term investment given the 7 studios recently acquired in just the past few years.

Games like Batman and other WB ip developed by Rocksteady, WB Montreal, Monolith, NetherRealm-MK etc are system sellers. They will bring in new customers=more game sells,gamepass/live subscriptions.

You don't gain marketshare or add new customers to your ecosystem by putting all your games on your competitions platform. It doesn't work that way. This is 101 stuff.

Why doesn't Sony just put Spiderman on PC and Xbox? More sells, right?

You clearly didnt experience the boss fight with KillerCroc. The salt is real here. I don't think people want to question Rocksteadys pedigree. It won't end well.

You mean in Asylum? With that idiot running at you every 15 seconds and then getting a batarang to the face and falling off the wooden rafts?

BWAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA

*deep breath*

BWAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA

You actually think that's good!
