Looking at the sky

I have been going for a run in the late evening and noticed some bright stars in the sky and worked out it Venus and Jupiter not stars but now they are gone so I was surprised to see some more bright enough ones to be seen at twilight. they could not have be a planet and it was Altair and the other two bright ones are vega and Deneb making up the summer triangle.

Any one else has any star stores
 
I could suggest downloading a good starmap app (I use Skyview Lite) so you can visualize where planets, stars, and constellations are located. If you are in the city it may be difficult to track down certain stars, and if you are in a rural area then there is so much more that is visible. I've read that if you are beyond Earth's atmosphere the points of light are brighter and more numerous by magnitudes.

A few years ago I noticed the same.

Often, it's planets, but sometimes stars. I become a bit obsessed with Mars, Venus, and Jupiter for a while.

Sky Map is a good app for stargazing or Stellarium if want something more polished with IAPs.
 
Mars was visible as a red dot a few years back, that was a cool time. Isn't the moon supposed to be hit by an asteroid in a few days, something visible with a modest telescope?

I wish we spent more (less, really) energy in keeping the night sky dark by cutting down on streetlight glare and such.
 
I like living in a forest but I don't like missing the bottom 25% of the night sky.

I heard a plane flying over my house, which is very common, but then there was a sudden vacuum sucking sound and then nothing. That was weird.
 
The sky is very beautiful and it's one of those things I wonder more about every now and then. How much of the sky do we miss in our lives. There's a good book called Inherit the Stars. They find a body in space and they find out it's from 50,000 years ago. I'm not really into stargazing. I did take an astrology class back in high school, but I don't remember a thing about it.
 
I was once driving home from a city in Sweden on the same latitude as Yellowknife and as I looked up at the sky from the backseat I was astounded by how the sky had more lights in it than darkness. I'd never seen anything like it. I want to visit some places in the future that have minimal light pollution. I heard about a Starlight Reserve being in Spain, so I'll likely book a visit there some day. Hopefully it won't be cloudy.

I had one of those moments when I stayed at a lodge out in the western part of the state where there are fewer cities, but smaller towns. I went and stood out on their outer deck around 11 at night. It felt like I was falling backwards. The light from the stars was more than I was expecting.
 
I also have learned that all the stars you can see are from the milky way and the white bands are its spiral arms not the galaxy itself

I absolutely love all things astronomy and cosmology since I was ten years old. I just never have anyone to talk about it with so I'm rusty because I didn't keep up with a lot of discoveries.

I got my astronaut training nearly 20 years ago but didn't make it. Got astronomer job offer after but it doesn't pay much. Better keep it to books (or online).
 
Aw yis, motherf*cking star gazing. Love it!
Lived at a remote place where you could see the Milky Way. Got myself a telescope and even got to see the moons of Jupiter. That was such a great moment.
It's nearly August and we will have the annually meteor shower. Wife and I tend then to lie in the open, watching for shooting stars.

And yes, a good app is crucial!

Best moment when I was a kid was to go see aurora borealis with my dad
 
I still won't forget one night on vacation in Crete, walking with a friend, quite drunk, in total darkness. We looked up at the sky and were astonished to see the entire visible sky with an exaggerated number of stars visible.
It's something that makes you realize that we are nothing in the universe.

The thing I always wonder with that kind of thing, why does he think that "the powers that be" are lying about that? I don't believe the moon landing was faked but I can at least see a reason why people would try and fake it. But what reason could there be to lie about the shape of the earth?

Flerfs are wonderful morons, they'll tell you it's a satanic conspiracy to hide the biblical truth. They see scientific pursuit as a sort of prosaic religion build to compete against christianity.
