I just started a new file on MGS5, for the first time since it originally released.
I’m going through each mission, just trying to survive, and make it through to to the end.
This is in contrast to the repetitious hunt for a perfect score on every mission, which had consumed my last play through. This time, I just want to make it out alive.
And that was something I enjoyed more in the previous MGS games - the NEED to think on your toes when the situation becomes dire. Sure, you could load a previous file, if you desired, but it wasn’t encouraged.
I miss that aspect of MGS.
With MGSV, I found myself restarting the mission whenever I’d get caught, because there was no point in continuing, if my goal was to achieve an “S” rank. But doing that takes away all the fun of the game.
It steals away what are meant to be the most thrilling moments - diving into the water to escape gunfire, before lighting up enemies, from below the deck, going Mano y Mano with a helicopter, or just holding an enemy hostage, while you pop out the knee-caps of his paralyzed ally.
I’m trying to get some of that back by pretending I only have one chance to accomplish each mission.
