Damn.

That is the whole reason that metacritic has any influence. That average is their existence. I don't like it particularly but it's what makes them "important". Same for movies.
People don't want to have to read reviews or better yet figure out which reviewer best jives with their taste. They want to look at an aggregate review score and determine how good a game is before purchase.
As always the obsidian/Zenmiax debacle shows the industry clearly cares about the metacritic metric which is sad really
8.75 average isn't quite up to my 8.8 day-one purchase threshold. I don't know about you guys but some of us have standards around here.IGN= 8.7
Gametrailers= 8.8
Those are bad scores?
I should clarify that I don't buy games based on metecritic. I go with review sites I have trusted for along time (as in for the past 15 years) like IGN and lately Gametrailers. I feel they are very fair with their review scores. There are lots of games I have bought that have gotten lower meteoritic scores such as Donkey Kong Country TF and Alice Madness Returns. I don't always go by reviews but usually where there is smoke there is fire. I know plenty of gaffers who defended KZ Shadow fall and Knack after they got low scores but after playing through those games they were like "yea you know what this game really isn't that good"
Why would anyone defend a games score without actually playing it? I understand saying a differentiating opinion about graphics or something like that, but I'd never say a game deservers higher or lower scores without playing the game..
Are people ever going to stop getting so pissed off by game reviews? I hope not. This thread is gold.
Welp, looks like i'm not buying the PS4 any time soon.

http://www.gaming-age.com/2014/03/infamous-second-son-review-ps4/Since inFamous Second Son is one of the few post-launch, non-cross generation games available for the PS4 right now, there's no way I can't discuss the game's stunning visuals. Sucker Punch certainly put together a stylish looking game, and the art direction is especially focused and consistent throughout. The image quality is nearly impeccable, rendered at a 1080p native resolution and running at a seemingly smoother than 30fps framerate. Textures, lighting and particle effects are all high quality, and the game is full of realistic looking shaders and materials.
The often wet, reflective Seattle streets and the constant glare of the sun and other light sources make for some spectacular backdrops. Even when Delsin is moving at light speed and unleashing all his powers during an intense battle, the engine does a great job holding texture/object pop-in and framerate drops to a minimum. There are no load times to worry about either, so the data is either loaded in memory or being streamed on the fly. When Delsin whipped out his neon powers at night for the first time, I'm pretty sure I said "wow!" out loud.

Quick question: Did Sessler compare it to Titanfall?
How is an 81 metacritic score subpar? What a bullshit drivebye post.I'm glad that you are enjoying but I can't afford to waste $60 on subpar games.
So SP are grand wizards or something

Its unlocked. What does "seemingly smoother than 30fps" mean? Aside from 60fps, obviously.
Good for you junior. Spend your money wisely. Only buy 90+ games.
But you see that 0.3 and 0.2 from a 9.0 makes all the difference in the world! I'm not going to waste my time on a mediocre game!

You use the average?
I developed a 7 page algorithm to determine whether or not I should by games day one.
You should really stop being such an uninformed consumer.
I put the game within my purchasing threshold with a .05% margin of error.
Sometimes you have to live dangerously and just go for it margin of error be damned.

It would be nice if all reviews were banned from Gaf.
Would be better if people talked about what they liked or hated about a game instead of conversations devolving into "look at these scores, this game is the best/worst game in the world."
Sadly not driveby post stayed to say, reviews from sites trusted by poster(ign and gametrailers) were reasons for thinking it was sub par. IGN gave it a 8.7 and GT gave it an 8.8.
Even though the reviews are good, a lot of gamers are waiting for THE killer-app to justify spending 470 on a new gen console. For most, Infamous is not it and the reviews confirm it's more of the same and not groundbreaking. Anyway expecting this game to be a killer-app was not serious, almost no franchises became good to great other than GTA but it was because of the transition to 3D. Anyway, current PS4 owners and Infamous fans, enjoy the game![]()
Reviews exist to compare products, not to push innovation that doesn't yet exist. If many of the negative reviews didn't list "the gameplay doesn't feel next gen" over and over again, then there wouldn't be as many complaints. It's a ridiculous complaint on the part of critics. When the game would've scored better on the PS3 with worse graphics, there's something seriously wrong with the review system.
There is nothing wrong with an 81 metascore, that means the vast majority of reviewers liked it. But I think people just wanted it to be the justification for their Ps4 purchase, which except for a few who really love this series, is something that a game with an 81 can't really be, unless the reviews are underrating it.
I've only read the Ars review so far and based on that one alone, it sounds like a great game. If I already had a PS4, I wouldn't think twice about getting this game as I really enjoyed 1 and 2.
I haven't decided yet if this game is going to get me to pick up the PS4. I look forward to user reviews. That may tip the scales for me.

A lot of you guys here perpetuate the view that 90+ Metacritic scores are the only "good" scores. It's really disappointing.
Mr. Sessler is obviously not a gamer, and I don't say this to be mean or because he's older.. I'm probably around his age, and I'm very much a gamer. I've watched quite a lot of the Rev3 Let's Play videos and it'd clear, even with simplistic games (Towerfall for example), he has no clue how to make pixels move with a controller in hand. I think the closest thing to playing a game he reviews is to have a colleague play it for him and then tell him his thoughts on it.
At least he was honest about this with his Demon Souls II review, but I believe it's like this with just about any game - save for Candy Crush Saga, and Bejeweled.
Just before I right the rest, I didn't say anything about the quality of inFamous. Just having fun with arbitrary lolziness. And yeah, if inFamous is the average (which is what Par is, then starting at midnight tonight when I start playing, I'm gonna be in a really happy place for the rest if the generation. If Infamous SS is a par. Then PS4 will have the best games EVER of any PS console.
