Infamous: Second Son Review Thread

That is the whole reason that metacritic has any influence. That average is their existence. I don't like it particularly but it's what makes them "important". Same for movies.

People don't want to have to read reviews or better yet figure out which reviewer best jives with their taste. They want to look at an aggregate review score and determine how good a game is before purchase.

As always the obsidian/Zenmiax debacle shows the industry clearly cares about the metacritic metric which is sad really

You are probably right. The scale thing does need to change though. Someone who gives a game 3/5 probably would not give the game a 60/100 on the 100 pt scale.

I should clarify that I don't buy games based on metecritic. I go with review sites I have trusted for along time (as in for the past 15 years) like IGN and lately Gametrailers. I feel they are very fair with their review scores. There are lots of games I have bought that have gotten lower meteoritic scores such as Donkey Kong Country TF and Alice Madness Returns. I don't always go by reviews but usually where there is smoke there is fire. I know plenty of gaffers who defended KZ Shadow fall and Knack after they got low scores but after playing through those games they were like "yea you know what this game really isn't that good"

As other pointed out it's probably worth mentioning

Edit: Dang it Nafai1123

Why would anyone defend a games score without actually playing it? I understand saying a differentiating opinion about graphics or something like that, but I'd never say a game deservers higher or lower scores without playing the game..

It happens, like, all the time.

It would be nice if all reviews were banned from Gaf.

Would be better if people talked about what they liked or hated about a game instead of conversations devolving into "look at these scores, this game is the best/worst game in the world."

So SP are grand wizards or something
Since inFamous Second Son is one of the few post-launch, non-cross generation games available for the PS4 right now, there's no way I can't discuss the game's stunning visuals. Sucker Punch certainly put together a stylish looking game, and the art direction is especially focused and consistent throughout. The image quality is nearly impeccable, rendered at a 1080p native resolution and running at a seemingly smoother than 30fps framerate. Textures, lighting and particle effects are all high quality, and the game is full of realistic looking shaders and materials.

The often wet, reflective Seattle streets and the constant glare of the sun and other light sources make for some spectacular backdrops. Even when Delsin is moving at light speed and unleashing all his powers during an intense battle, the engine does a great job holding texture/object pop-in and framerate drops to a minimum. There are no load times to worry about either, so the data is either loaded in memory or being streamed on the fly. When Delsin whipped out his neon powers at night for the first time, I'm pretty sure I said "wow!" out loud.

IGN= 8.7

Gametrailers= 8.8

Those are bad scores?

But you see that 0.3 and 0.2 from a 9.0 makes all the difference in the world! I'm not going to waste my time on a mediocre game!

Excellent can't wait to play it!

Seriously guys just stop. Either play the game and enjoy or don't and shut the fuck up. If you think a game averaging 81 on metacritic is a reason not to buy it you were not interested in the first place and are only looking to concern troll.

Even though the reviews are good, a lot of gamers are waiting for THE killer-app to justify spending 470€ on a new gen console. For most, Infamous is not it and the reviews confirm it's more of the same and not groundbreaking. Anyway expecting this game to be a killer-app was not serious, almost no franchises became good to great other than GTA but it was because of the transition to 3D. Anyway, current PS4 owners and Infamous fans, enjoy the game :)

Good for you junior. Spend your money wisely. Only buy 90+ games.

Ah then he'll grumble it's overrated like all those "TLOU sucks" posters.

I'll never get why some people can't connect the dots and see a high score in and of itself doesn't guarantee you'll like the game at all. GTA games get huge scores and I don't enjoy 'em much and tend to skip most of them for example.

Know your tastes. Do a little basic research on the experience the game offers, check out a few contrasting reviews and I'd hoe most people could come to an informed decision as to whether the game will likely appeal to them personally or not.

I must say though this thread is the best in a while for entertainment.

Jesus tap dancing Christ @ some of the reactions in this thread!

I see reviews as nothing more than a opinion of a person getting paid to give his opinion on it.

I honestly trust GAF members spoiler free impressions more the any reviewer.

Anyway I can't wait until tomorrow to get my hands on this bad (second son) boy!

Does sessler have some sort of mean streak towards sony fanboys over the hatred they spew at him ?. maybe even a bit subconsciously that could influence some of his reviews on some level ?.. who knows.. but with some of the stuff said in this thread i wouldn't blame him tbh, even still though he seems professional enough to not let that get in the way of his reviews. The dudes one of the most intelligent mofo's i've ever heard speak about games.. he deserves some respect.

This is one entertaining thread though, its made me more excited then ever to play this tomorrow... and i was just getting into ground zeros too, not to mention still got thief to finish.. the drought has cleared.

8.75 average isn't quite up to my 8.8 day-one purchase threshold. I don't know about you guys but some of us have standards around here.

You use the average?

I developed a 7 page algorithm to determine whether or not I should by games day one.

You should really stop being such an uninformed consumer.

I put the game within my purchasing threshold with a .05% margin of error.
Sometimes you have to live dangerously and just go for it margin of error be damned.

Decent review scores, should settle around the same as the previous two titles.

I've not played the series before being one of the many Xbox jumpers this generation, so hopefully that will add something to the experience for me!

:(

Teach me your ways...

Part of the frustration is that, iirc, this is the last major exclusive til The Order that we know about, and there is lots of doubt the Order will even make it out in the fall.

Knowing that this will be the last Ps4 exclusive for a while I think made people hope for more. There is nothing wrong with an 81 metascore, that means the vast majority of reviewers liked it. But I think people just wanted it to be the justification for their Ps4 purchase, which except for a few who really love this series, is something that a game with an 81 can't really be, unless the reviews are underrating it.

But who knows, a handful reviewers including big sites like GT and IGN did give it scores above an 85. So maybe you'll fall into that camp and really love the game.

I've only read the Ars review so far and based on that one alone, it sounds like a great game. If I already had a PS4, I wouldn't think twice about getting this game as I really enjoyed 1 and 2.

I haven't decided yet if this game is going to get me to pick up the PS4. I look forward to user reviews. That may tip the scales for me.

Sadly not driveby post stayed to say, reviews from sites trusted by poster(ign and gametrailers) were reasons for thinking it was sub par. IGN gave it a 8.7 and GT gave it an 8.8.

The man's a genius.

I honestly find the whole notion of a killer app odd. Not only do I struggle with the idea there is one game that makes a console worth buying but the evidence suggests such things don't really exist (in terms of seeing a console reach 80m plus units). Even GTA doesn't get nearly enough sales to drive anything like 80 million consoles selling. And look at Halo - thing could sell 7 to 8 million on Xbox and the console still only sold 25 million.

The key to the big numbers is a big and diverse library, the right price point at the right time and sustained and steady releases of games into said library.

Second Son - like TitanFall on XB1 - is simply another brick in the wall of what will end up as a large library of games that many owners won't even buy. It looks like a solid follow up from previous titles underpinned with what looks like one of the best current gen engines yet delivered and I'll enjoy it as such.

But you're probably right - the notion of the killer app exists and that's probably behind the hype, expectations and ultimate disappointment when it doesn't turn out that way.

It's funny that in the end - going by metacritic anyway - both inFamous and TitanFall are below the mythical 90% and the subject of much teeth gnashing as to whether they "delivered".

Reviews exist to compare products, not to push innovation that doesn't yet exist. If many of the negative reviews didn't list "the gameplay doesn't feel next gen" over and over again, then there wouldn't be as many complaints. It's a ridiculous complaint on the part of critics. When the game would've scored better on the PS3 with worse graphics, there's something seriously wrong with the review system.

Review do not exist to compare products. In fact, the comparisons and assertions that they are objective are exactly where this whole thing gets really toxic. Its a one persons opinion at a given time... If you think of them as anything more than that then you are "doing it wrong". Even if its the best Infamous game that means nothing about what it would score in 2014.

If people felt like this is just a prettier version of Infamous then thats a very valid criticsm. The expectation that developers should be doing more with than just increasing pixel count with the new hardware is not out of bounds.

What? So if people who didn't like previous infamous games find this one really enjoyable, it can't justify the purchase because the metacritic score is not high enough?

I wasn't surprised at all by Adams review. I knew he wouldn't give it a 5 or a 4 star rating. Very predictable.

Haven't played the game but based on all the other reviews I think it should have been a 4/5.

Just go into the OT, tons of people there already have the game and love it.

Personally i'm more than pleased with the review scores, it looks like its ALOT of fun with graphics to melt your eyeballs.

With such a high % of positives, its going to be a winner, although if this sort of game isn't your thing, maybe you can look at the game objectively and realize maybe it is for the people/crowd it was designed to cater for and walk away gracefully instead of trying to troll it.

I am still in shock by TloU threads when 90% of the thread love the experience and yet some come in with hate strapped to their keyboard.

Next-Gen (current) is just starting baby, put your seatbelts on if this is launch window...

A lot of you guys here perpetuate the view that 90+ Metacritic scores are the only "good" scores. It's really disappointing.

I've seen some people argue in the Titanfall review thread that 80's on MC is considered average, no joke.

People in general get too hung up on review scores. The most important thing is the content of those reviews and where the contrast is from the high scores to the low scores. But that would be reasonable and it's the internet where hyperbole is king.

Mr. Sessler is obviously not a gamer, and I don't say this to be mean or because he's older.. I'm probably around his age, and I'm very much a gamer. I've watched quite a lot of the Rev3 Let's Play videos and it'd clear, even with simplistic games (Towerfall for example), he has no clue how to make pixels move with a controller in hand. I think the closest thing to playing a game he reviews is to have a colleague play it for him and then tell him his thoughts on it.

At least he was honest about this with his Demon Souls II review, but I believe it's like this with just about any game - save for Candy Crush Saga, and Bejeweled.

Some of these posts, man. The only reason I even know about Sessler is because of GAF. But now...now you don't believe he's a "real gamer"? What in_the_hell. LOL. So he's a sleeper agent deployed by whom to do what exactly? From what I can tell Rev3 isn't even on metacritic. I just cannot understand this line of thinking. Would you truly be satisfied if every critic agreed with you? Hell, have you even played the game, smh.

If Infamous SS is a par. Then PS4 will have the best games EVER of any PS console.
Just before I right the rest, I didn't say anything about the quality of inFamous. Just having fun with arbitrary lolziness. And yeah, if inFamous is the average (which is what Par is, then starting at midnight tonight when I start playing, I'm gonna be in a really happy place for the rest if the generation.

I just watched Adam Sessler's review. Game looks great visually but the same enemy types looks like it'll be kind of boring to play.

Crazy how fast this thread is moving in just 6 hours o_O
