When I got divorced (20's) my ex signed me up for all of this AARP stuff so I have been getting it most of my life. The problem is now when I get it, I do not think it is because of that.
I got ahead of it and called myself "the grandfather of my team" in the middle of my company's annual global summit because I went from being the most junior person to the most senior person after my former boss and one co-worker left the company. Now my new boss and new co-worker have less experience than I do and ironically they're at least 10 years older than I am. IDK I could have called myself "elder statesman" but that seemed pretentious so I leaned into grandpa.
First time I ever heard it was from a Chinese friend a few years ago. Must have broken containment into the western internet. Now my zoomer (he's like 25 I have no idea) friend calls me unc. It's good.

I think the etymology comes from AAVE in the west. Most modern slang seems to be white people trying to sound like black people from 20 years ago. Maybe all paths in life lead to unclehood.
