I got called "Unc" twice this week at work

Isn't Unc more a derogatory term for someone older who thinks they can still kick it with the zoomers but it's just out of touch or incredibly cringe.

A great example of an Unc in this case is Cristiano Ronaldo.

No. Not derogatory but it CAN be used that way.

It's a term of respect if you're obviously older. Shoot, my actual 41 yr old nephew calls me Unc.

I got ahead of it and called myself "the grandfather of my team" in the middle of my company's annual global summit because I went from being the most junior person to the most senior person after my former boss and one co-worker left the company. Now my new boss and new co-worker have less experience than I do and ironically they're at least 10 years older than I am. IDK 🤷 I could have called myself "elder statesman" but that seemed pretentious so I leaned into grandpa.

Its roughly the same across SEA too. "Excuse me uncle/auntie" is a polite way to address somebody clearly older than you.
First time I ever heard it was from a Chinese friend a few years ago. Must have broken containment into the western internet. Now my zoomer (he's like 25 I have no idea) friend calls me unc. It's good.

Anything to be more like Jee Seok-jin.

I think the etymology comes from AAVE in the west. Most modern slang seems to be white people trying to sound like black people from 20 years ago. Maybe all paths in life lead to unclehood.
