How can they be so braindead?

You come up with anti-consumer ideas when you are at the top of your game, not when you constantly suck for years.

Is the game industry management level totally braindead or they are intentionally trying to destroy everything?

I really don't know anymore.

Sure, "you will own nothing and be happy" is there, but what is happening still seems absolutely retarded.

The disc thing has been brewing for a decade. GameStop has brought in billions LTD as a PlayStation game pawn shop and there's a contingent who wants to use those billions to plug the RAM and bomba holes.

Think of the billions they've burnt just recently with zero return. Concord, Bungie, FairgameS and Horizon Gathering yet to come.

Yeah and these companies are run by intelligent, yet completely retarded people. They know what they are doing and see the outcome of their actions, at least for their own gain. But they cannot anticipate what this will do to the brand or the reputation because in the end I think they just don't care. They are not able to reflect on these things, let alone their own feelings and humanity.
There is a bottom line for them, profit... And that is put before everything else. That's why they can easily be hijacked for social engineering and manipulative purposes as the useful idiots they are.

corpos can only seeing something that they could understand, if they following the fans and thinking for a while about word of mouths, they could see more $$$. not just physical disc banters, but also many things.

No lies detected here, but they must surely see that even the profit part will be over. So they are not as clever or they want to destroy it.

But they are not even seeing that, so many studio closures etc. Can't they see that even if they have good numbers momentarily, soon it will be over?
Why would they care if they can fill their own pockets and let themselves and their families and children have a nice life. Look at politicians, they ruin peoples lifes and entire countries yet get promoted to higher paying jobs with more esteem constantly

It's about potential and percentages. They see that x% of players have been going digital year over year for several years straight so they also look at the money they'll be saving from ditching physical and also all the other anti-consumer benefits they get from going digital alone.
The numbers probably look great so they decide to expedite the process.

Yepp, I said they are intelligent... Not clever :messenger_winking: they will burn everything down as long as their own pockets are full and their families lead a good life with enough money and power

Things are literally getting worse by the day at this point, if this doesn't cause another gaming crash then I don't know what will.

Hardware price hikes; old digital stores shutting down ( cough PS3 and Vita ); 80 dollar games that don't even come with a disc, over 90% of Triple A games coming out are forgettable woke slop you couldn't even pay me to play, 99% of indie games are forgettable garbage etc

The only things that I'm genuinely hyped about for this year is the Neo Geo AES+ and Atari's remasters of classic games ( Thief the Dark Project, Godzilla Destroy All Monsters Melee ) . Either go retro or go home as I would say.

I'm sorry pal. But you're pointing fingers at a corporation thinking they have your interest at heart. Some may say that you're actually braindead instead. Profit is their goal and its not coming from older generations. Digital only means the majority has spoken which isn't you or your peers.

Gaming was better when it was this relatively niche thing that existed in the corner, anyone who gamed was stereo-typed as a pimple-faced nerd or whatever, and while it was always for-profit( I mean, the point has never been to NOT make money), it didn't come at the expense of the artistic merits of the medium itself.

The moment it attracted big investment and earned more revenue than Hollywood, the customer changed from the gamer to the shareholder, and the gamer itself to the product to extract maximum $$$ from. Frankly, gaming would be in a much better place if it was completely eastern-centric. All these bloated 250m western AAA games likely have some very creative accounting behind it.

At this stage, 4 months shy of 49, I've accepted that I had my run ( gen 2 through 8) and with what we've seen in gen 9 and going forward........ good luck to Gen Z/Alpha.

Im sure the digital only console, with a 100€ optional disc drive, dlcs and indie digital only counted towards your "majority" helped.

Im sure its just a minority making angry noises

It's "Optional" since 80% of the people on PS buy Digital. You don't seem to be ok.

Because that's how greed works.

It makes people believe that their shit is gold and they can to do whatever they want to get more out of it.

This is the second time Playstation is pushing that.

After the huge success of the ps2, Sony believed that they could do whatever they wanted.

Now with the ps5 success and xbox being almost dead, Sony again thinks they can do whatever they want.

This has been coming for a while; it's not like they just decided to do this. They were simply waiting for the right time. And as bad as this looks now, this is the best time to do this. There is so much bad going on everywhere that this ends up being just another shityy thing. And I'll say it again: it's not a coincidence that this announcement came out on the back of GTA6 announcing something similar, even coming out almost 18 months before it goes into effect officially for everyone else.

It's why, right after GTA6's announcement, I said everyone should get ready for this and that this was the path everyone was going to go on; they were just waiting for someone big to announce it first.

I believe there will be another announcement soon, not a walkback in any way, but more of an expansion of the original news, where they will say something akin to physical game keys will still be sold in stores and how they can only be active on one account at a time. In their OG announcement the left the door open for this next step.

Playstation are at the top of their game OP. They never said so much money. They know their audience will follow them.

People here are old, but Sony's audience has always been the same since the 90s. You simply aged beyond their target audience.

I don't believe they would have made this move at this point if not for the hardware price crisis forcing their hand early.

The only way they can build a proper install base next gen is by subsidising the console, and the only way that degree of subsidy is viable is if they significantly increase what they make per user. Capturing all spending through PS store achieves that.

There's a reason the industry has been waiting for GTA6 with baited breath. We all looked at it as being the one thing that would encourage gen 9 fencesitters to take the leap, but it is the canary in the coalmine to pull the all digital future we knew was inevitable into the now. Only a game this anticipated, and a system without any real competition in the high end console market, could be poised to do this and shake off the ensuing waves of contempt. I bet alot of people who cancelled their PS plus still pre-ordered GTA. Even those who say yeah, fuck getting a PS6, Sony is making a calculated gamble that the people who stay in their ecosystem make up the difference for those who bow out. It's gonna take tremendous testicular fortitude to completetely nope out of what's happening now.

I'm pretty sure there were a lot of patents circa 2013 that they wanted a path to digital much like Microsoft. I would have to dig the patents but I recall they've always looked into the possibility. Also sure their 2013 #4thegamers was a stunt only because they saw Microsoft have huge backlash. All industry reports indicated they wanted the same before

Let's say you're in a top position at Sony and you'll get a bonus of 300k if you reach a certain goal in a certain time that will benefit top brass and shareholders at Sony. Would you give up that 300k bonus by not closing a studio or 2? Few people would.

CEOs are shareholder slaves. They don't really make any meaningful decisions. Shareholders want their return, they don't care if next month or today. They can always sell the stock, they have no interest in the long term health of the business they're invested in currently.

Gen Z and alpha don't give a shit about consoles and the concept of buying games (F2P).

If sony wants to bank on them, there are not prepared to what will happen in the future.

Too many people treat large companies and corporations like they care about them, like certain ones care more than others, or that they're special and genuinely do care. None of them care. They just want your money.

Consoles are "anti-consumer" by definition. Platform holders lock you into their ecosystem, regularly deprecate peripherals for "new generations", force you to pay for a subscription to unlock basic features, and hold a monopoly on all games sold. Why is full digital the thing to push you over the line?

You lose the used market, cheaper physical versions (even new) and ability to sell your games. Duh?

What you said is absolutely true but now consoles will be even more anti consumer!

Its because of the financialization of the economy. Walk into any supermarket and you will see walls of products that are smaller than they used to be, use cheaper ingredients, but still cost more to buy. There are reasons given for it but mostly it is because everything is run by a very small number of companies who can fix the markets and all they care about is optimizing their profit margin. Because finance merged all the companies with buyouts and demands greater profits every year.

There's no way it lives up to the hype, right?

Don't think too much into it man.

While everyone on the ground was fighting the goofy console warz across the internet, the large gaming corpos were laughing at us from their HQs quietly figuring out how to maximize their profits via making shitty games that appeal to the younger generation of people that haven't yet established a strong sense of ownership in their media consumption (streaming/digital).

You will own nothing and you will like it. Eat your gaming slop, peasant.

Sony was never the good guy, the better gaming company, or your friend. They've all had good games, bad games, and are all headed in the same direction one way or another.

They all suck because at the end of the day its always just been about the money, not the passion of the hobby itself.

It's the perfect storm: a total lack of competition + a fan base so blindly loyal they'll defend moves that actively fuck them + corporate burning desire to recapture the absurd profit margins of the PS4. An industry crash is the only way it can recover.

Bean counters only think in short-term profits and quarterly earnings reports to please shareholders.

They keep pushing customers until customers push back. This is just the nature of business and capitalism. None of these corporations are your friend. It's why I find fanboyism so hilarious.

It's what happens when there is no competition. That's why i could never understand why braindead Sony fans kept cheering for the death of Xbox.

That's not true. Every company is competing for your time. From social media apps like Tiktok and Youtube, subscription services like Netflix and HBO, PC gaming on Steam or Epic, and digital gaming platforms like Fortnite, Roblox and Minecraft.

Any smart company will adapt to the market and consumer trends. For example Playstation didnt come out PSVR, or the PS Portal to try and innovate. They created them because that was what their data and research showed where consumer interest was heading.

Ive read that Sony has been preparing to ditch physical games for a year so they could repurpose their factories to supply AI image sensors in partnership with TSMC. That decision has very little to do with a lack of competition from Xbox, and more about a hardware company adapting to meet the demand of AI with B2B sales like Nvidia and others. They'd still do it even if Xbox was more competitive because it's where they could make the most money.

I think we are mistaken to believe that we the video game fanatics who live on forums are the target audience for these companies.

But it isn't us.

As crazy as it may seem, there is a different type of consumer who makes up a larger share of the market, and these companies know it perfectly well.
