Have you ever tried to stop someone buying a game in a store?

I was at GAME yesterday (UK's equivalent of Gamestop basically) and saw a boy (about 14-16) and his mother take Shadow the Hedgehog to the counter. They didnt look like they had a real lot of money and was likely getting the game for his birthday.

While it was heartening to see they werent getting GTA or 50 Cent's game... I still couldnt bring myself to tell them that the game is a stinker. It wasnt my business anyway I guess.

Maybe he'll like the game... I hope so.

I do remember telling someone years ago not to buy Simpsons Wrestling, they actually listened to me and ended up getting something else.

Have you ever stepped up and done your gamer duty and stopped someone from buying a turd of a game?

I haven't. If they didn't read up on it and not now anything about it, I have nothing to do with it.

They may like it anyways...you can't be sure.

Not me. I've seen gamers actually enjoy Enter the Matrix and Sonic Adventure 2: Battle, so I try not to force my tastes on them.

no, usually only my friends.

though when i worked at TRU/Gamestop i would try to steer people in the right direction if they weren't sure what to get, or were buying a gift and was clueless about games. (ie: a lot of kids got mario advance games and not crappy liscensed garbage for gba last x-mas :lol )

What?

Sonic Adventure 2 is a good game.

Some kid had the last copy of ResEvil4 for PS2. That was the sole game I had entered the local cramped GameCrazy for. The sales rep even said it was the last copy. The kid was debating between RE4 or some wrestling game for his b-day, but was leaning towards RE4.

His mom asked "It has a mature rating on it, it's not too violent is it?". Her son said "No, I watch worse movies".

I had to say something.

"Yeah that game is gruesome. I like the part where you use the drill to cut out people's guts and stuff. You might want to have your son step out of the room at the rape scene."

Yes, I'm shameless.

When I worked at Gamestop, but only in extreme circumstances. Once when someone was trying to buy Mike Tyson's Heavyweight Boxing. Tried to steer him towards Fight Night but alas, he was a sucker. Tried to stop a dad from buying GTA III for 10 year old or younger looking son. He would not listen to me at all though.

I couple of years ago when I worked at a game store, I didn't let anyone purchase Enter the Matrix or the Lord of the Rings Fellowship of the Ring (Black Label games)... well, until they dropped down to .01cent.

Trying to force your opinions on others is bad when it's done on the internet but it's just plain pathetic in real life.

When I bought World of Warcraft the person ahead of me was buying Lineage 2 and he was saying how a friend of his said it was the best MMO ever made. I wanted to laugh and point then tell him to buy WoW but I didn't.

I've only done it once. I went into Gamestop and saw some 10yr old kid holding a stack of money while one the employee was escorting him around the store...picking up games like GTA, Manhunter, etc etc

I was in a bad mood that day already, normally I probably wouldn't say anything. But an employee GIVING a 10yr old kid MANHUNTER to buy?!

I basically just asked the kid where is mom or dad was. He said he came in on his bike. So I told the manager.

Kid probably came back as soon as I left though. At least I tried.

I was the manager, AND you can NEVER stop someone from buying something if they want it. Any one that says otherwise is lying through their teeth.

An employee of mine was asked by a customer for an Xbox. The employee promptly went to the backroom and came back with a Gamecube, stating that this would be better.

He was promptly fired.

You may find it hard to believe that the game is not as bad as this forum or magazine reviews will have you believe.

Also, young kids will find a lot to enjoy in Shadow, despite its many short-comings.

Anyway, I have never personally tried to stop people from buying a game(though, when I worked retail, I would frequently try to deter people to the Xbox and Gamecube instead of PS2...anyways...).

Though, one Holiday season I was picking up a copy of Rocky for GC as a christmas gift for my brother(hardcore boxing fanatic, loves Rocky), and the clerk wouldn't sell me the damn game. He kept saying "Aw, he don't want Rocky. C'mon dude, METROID PRIME just came out, he'd like THAT better!" I told him, "No...he wants ROCKY. If he wanted Metroid Prime he would have asked for Metroid Prime.

This is why I rarely shop at Gamestop. Ugh. Fanboys.

Good job. I actually made a point when I was hiring people in the interview to gauge if they were a fanboy or not. I would absolutely not hire someone who was to caught up and could not see the merits of each system or the fact that people have different tastes.

If I was still hiring people right now I think my first question would be "If someone came in and wanted to buy a PSP/DS what would you do?" :lol :lol That would weed them out quick.

I've flat out prevented people from buying games, but only if they piss me off. The week before the Tales game came out on PSP import, some guy was asking if we'd have it, but he was basically harassing the girl I work with. Not like sexually, but just being a goddamn pain in the ass. She got all flustered and asked me if it was okay to punch him in the face. I told her maybe next time. :p

So when we got it in and I saw him come in, I took the copy we had and put it in a drawer. I know the point of business is to make money, but if it comes as the expense of having to put up with fuckers like that, forget it. We don't need business from people like that.

Once or twice I've tried to tip someone off on a place nearby where a game might be significantly cheaper (or on sale), when they seem to be looking at one seriously. I always feel creepy when trying to do it, though, and you know they probably just want to buy it where they are, even if all it meant was driving two minutes down the road to another familiar shop and picking it up there instead to save $20.

Not really. But a couple months ago, a boy about 7 years old tried buying Turok for PS2, which costs like $12 dollars. The sales person wouldn't sell it to him. He came up to me and asked me to buy it for him and gave me $12. I saw no harm in a little kid playing Turok and I admired his balls, but I did need some more money to take care of the tax. He hands me his MVP card. I tell him they might ask me to verify information on his account and his plan won't work.

If he brought me a game I happened to like, I might have been nice enough to cover the tax. :)

What, you sat by and let that poor boy buy that hellspawn? That's the equilivent of letting a friend drive drunk.

I haven't stopped anyone, but I have started talking loudly to a friend about how terrible whatever game is the idiot there plans to buy.

No but that doesn't stop a bunch of assholes from doing it to me. Every time some jizz stain tries to recommend me a game, I feel like putting my fist through their teeth.

And then you were fired by the higher ups for firing him for no reason and he was rehired and made manager I hope.

Did it a couple of times. But it's always if the customer is asking questions. If he doesn't talk and just take the box and put in on the counter, he knows what he is doing.

That faggat should have been fired. I own a GameCube, and bought an Xbox last year (for modding purposes mostly but it's stil nice to have a second console around). If I went in, asked for an Xbox, and some punkass twat returns with a GameCube, telling *me* it's a smarter choice, do you have any idea how pissed I would be? The audacity right there is enough for me to want him fired.

I remember the Christmas of 1998.
Me and a buddy were at the Zelda kiosk playing OoT for the first time (just arrived in stores, this was in November before the game was released) and some lady brought Blasto up to us, asking us if her son would like it.

Without hesitating, we told her yes, definitely buy it, and went on about how great it was.

Please with her choice, she went to the register and bought her now unlucky son Blasto.

We had a good laugh at that one.

I'm free 2night after my LARPing guild meets.
One time I was browsing and some guy and his son were buying a gamecube. They seemed to think that you actually needed GBA's to play the system and had two of those, the system and Zelda. The man was like "Are you sure you it needs these too, it's gonna be pretty expensive". Now normally I wouldn't have cared but I was a bit peeved that the store employee was making no attempt to educate them that in fact you don't NEED the GBA's to play it and was just being a greedy ass.

When I got in line behind them I just casually said something like "It comes with a controller already in the box. You don't really need those." So they put the GBA's back and got one other game. After they left the clerk was like giving me the evil eye and didn't say anything as he rang me up.

Then I knocked over several magazine racks to show him who was the superior nerd!

Just once. I was browsing through a GameStop about a year back and two guys (looked like late high school or early college) were checking out the XBox games. One of them picked up Drake of the 99 Dragons and started talking with his friend about the game and how cool it looked...

I felt like a hero after that one.

Most people here can prevent a sale from the comfort of their own chair, so why bother wasting precious calories and actually venture outside? You know, where all that nasty acid rain is.

Come on, someone doesn't get fired for isolated behaviour. That just happened to be the last straw.

I went into an EB once and pre-ordered Ridge Racer 6, put down the full amount too. He asked me if I was going to pre-order an Xbox 360 too, and I said no, I wasn't getting the system - I just collect Ridge Racer games. And he said, "No offense - but why Ridge Racer?" Nothing harsh - he just told me he didn't like the series.

I eventually did wind up canceling that order and getting Suikoden Tactics with the credit.

When I was a wee lad, I stood in line at the store to get that 7 up tie-in, Spot: The Video Game. When I got to the counter, the clerk looked me up and down like I was a stack of shit. He then cleared his throat and spit a snot shot into my face. I dropped the game and ran screaming from the store.

Later, I learned his mother had been killed by a 7-up delivery truck. I hear he stalked Orlando Jones after the 7-Up Yours spots first aired.

True story.

I remember this one time I was in Best Buy, and this guy was trying to find Mario 64 DS I think. At the time, BB was totally out, but I had seen the game at Target the night before. So when the clerk said they didn't have any, I chimed in saying they should try Target, and the clerk approached me afterward and gave me a ration of shit for interfering with her doing her job or something. Bitch was lucky I didn't slap her, or at least complain to management.

I was just tryin' to make a kid's Christmas, not mess with her bottom line. Talk about a douchebag.

You sir are a champion. That's awesome. Was it worth it? I have the GC version and am tempted to buy the PS2 version for the extra content, but I'm not willing to pay full price for a game I already own on another system.

not intentionally but I do remember I think it was the week that Tales of Symphonia came out, i went to pick it up at gamestop (for the free artbook), some guy was trading in some games, Madden and a baseball game, he was a rather dirty guy, uneven gotee, in his 20s making all kinds of stupid remarks, he was at the counter looking at DOA Xtreme Volleyball talking to the cashier how funny the commercial was and how he wanted to get it. They looked at me for some reason as if they wanted my input and I told them I played it and it was for people who like dressing up Barbie dolls, he then looked really embarassed and put the game back. :lol
