Hamaguchi Possibly Working on FF17?

Arsic

Loves his juicy stink trail scent

God I hope not. This dude will drive dolphins, and gay dancing down our throats at every turn he can.

Maybe he can play an advisory role on world building, visuals, and combat?

Only really known for FF13 and the FF7R trilogies. So dumpster fire.
Didn't he also do the other two FF13 games?

Like I said an advisor role works. Even FF13 has cool world building, visuals, and combat.

He just blows ass at other major aspects like:
-Pacing
-Side quests and content
-Atmosphere
-Dialogue

Yes I realize others are working on these games with and under him, but he's green lighting some horrendous shit.

The issue is the FF7 redo games have done well for SE so they'll let it rock.

Should they just let a random new director take the lead on the next one ? Someone with passion that can understand why the oldschool FF created so many fans in the first place.

Maybe just let FF17 be the game to "go back to the roots" and then they can do whatever they want to "attract modern audiences" in FF18 - I just don't think I have much more life left in me to wait for like FFXX to be the one to implement turn base combat again

That resonance game is as close to what you're asking for as you'll get.

I don't see them pivoting away from action. They'll just do FF7 redo combat with some tweaks for FF17 I bet.

My guess is they'll try to copy Expedition 33. Turn-based with real-time dodge/parry and a somber tone. Then they'll gay it up with tons of retarded sidequests and cringe anime dialog.

I think the jury's still out on Hamaguchi as a director. Remake was a great game, though he co-directed that one with Nomura. Rebirth had a lot of great stuff in it, but the content bloat is certainly a problem that he was positioned to influence as the sole director for that game. His comments about this issue in interviews are a bit ambiguous, but that's pretty typical of Japanese devs: you'll rarely, if ever, hear them outright admit to game design faults. More often, they will respond to criticism by quietly making adjustments internally. He clearly is aware of the complaints, though, so we'll see if there's any course correction in Revelation.

I think the more beneficial change for Final Fantasy going forward is getting Nojima away from the writing, but I don't foresee that happening until he retires.

I understand they won't right now, but overtime when IPs start to lose momentum (some might argue FF could be on that spot) there is always this "reset" that companies usually do to rekindle the flame of the lost fans. I am just hoping that doesn't happen like 20 years from now.

Nah, give it to someone else at this point, and someone who actually wants to do something turn-based....and when I say turn-based actually innovate a new system like they used to, not asking for a complete retread.

Also get someone who believes in the concept of brevity, because the bloat and slow story pacing filled with too much exposition needs to be culled down.

I liked FF7 Rebirth, but I actively avoided large chunks of side content to keep the experience fun, and even it still had filler sections in the main story path.

I wish. He's evidently a great director. Mighty efficient in directing teams to produce at the very least very good games.

But I think Yoshi P was just joking. FF17 should be finishing pre production any time now if SE wants to release the game before 2030.

According to google FF13-2 (the one I really like) was Motomu Toriyama as director, and Yoshinori Kitase as producer, Shinji Hashimoto as executive producer.

Back in the XIII days Hamaguchi seems to have been just a programmer. He was lead cutscene programmer on XIII, and lead application programmer on xiii-2. His first project lead role is Mobius, and then he's been a director on all the FF7 remake games.

Is funny because every Final Fantasy fan trying to build the perfect Final Fantasy has a different idea on how that looks like.

It's like playing a rogue like deck builder where the cards are Yoshinori Kitase, Tetsuya Nomura, Motomu Toriyama, Toshiro Tsuchida, Nobuo Uematsu, etc. you just have to pick them in the right order and make some synergies work out haha

Both trilogies.

His career is as follows

FF12 - Visual effects: Real-time rendering
FF13 - Lead cutscene programmer, Crystal Tools development staff
FF13-2 - Lead Application Programmer
FF13LR - Main Programmer
FF14 - Client Programmer
Mobius Final Fantasy - Project Leader
FFVIIR - Co-director
FFVII First Soldier - Supervisory Support
FFVII Rebirth - Director
FFVII Revelation - Director

Would prefer Matsuno IMO.

It'd be really cool if it were Motomu Toriyama or Tetsuya Nomura. I'm sure Nomura's really busy with Kingdom Hearts IV, but maybe Toriyama considering Ever Crisis is winding down already :pie_thinking:.

Hamaguchi would be fine too, though. Don't forget that FF13 and FF15 had legendarily troubled dev cycles, whereas all three of these FF7 remake games seem to be going really smoothly. I'm not the biggest fan of the combat system, but it is better than XV's combat. Also I'm interested to see what he could do on a wholly original game where he was sole director from the very start.

No No No GIF

Hamaguchi is a newbie director but since he's co-directing the remake of such an important game, i wouldn't see this as a surprise.

What are the options within SE?

The other FF7-2 directors:
Tetsuya Nomura is making KH4. He's both a genius and chaos.
Toriyama directed X-2 and FF13 trilogy before... lol

The "FF14 team" made a spin-off called FF16...

They could revive Matsuno or beg Sakaguchi to make a final Final Fantasy but the probability of that to happen is very low.

To be fair, while I have issues with both games, I enjoyed the combat, visuals and music in both of them.
If only they can find someone to write a story that's not pure anime cringe it could actually turn out alright.

But I won't hold my breath, it's Square after all and I learned my lesson after 16.
You know what they say: "Fool me once shame on you, fool me 3 times in a row and holy shit I should fucking know better by now"

FF13 was weird because they hyped up this Fabula Nova Crystallis that no one even cares about these days. I have zero 0️⃣ hype for their mainline Final Fantasy being good. I don't get the mindset of modern day FF fans at these events. They're so excited about the oddest side of the franchise. Good for them, right? I'm only in it for the smaller projects and Part 3. FFXV and FFXVI are going to be forgotten about in time. FFXIII's legacy nosedived with Lightning Returns and that was with tri-Ace's help.

The only thing XIII really had going for it were the graphics and Gran Pulse. No towns, just a linear Final Fantasy game, and a very dumb looking final boss.

Yeah I can't see it being Matsuno or Yoko Taro. I think it's one of their existing big series directors or someone totally new to directing mainline FF games, in which case it'll probably also be co-directed by someone more experienced, probably Nomura.

Hiroyuki Ito....

Hamauguchi and the 7 remake team still busy with Revelation. only possible timeline is once they finished next year.

right now there is no way FF17 still not in development. it is a failure on Square Enix if they havent started develop next FF yet. my guess it is either CS3 team after 16 or other secret team within SE. former Luminous production that was absorbed within SE is possible another candidate but they lacked strong figure to lead them. it is 2-3 years since 16 and Forspoken. their game should already in full production now. probably why Yoshida joking with Hamauguchi there. it could spill things.

if Hamauguchi and the team gonna make mainline FF, it probably FF18. unless they really hasnt start 17 and CS3 and the other team working on new IP instead.

based on Revelation, if he gonna make next mainline FF we safely can expect open world with airship in the game. i hope they bring writer from other divison to work with. Natsuko Ishikawa from FF14 is good candidate, if she hasnt already working on next mainline FF with CS3 yet. SE should not hesitate to let their divisions to work together. CS1 and CS3 each has their strength and weakness that could be use to cover each others.

the problem with CS1 or modern final fantasy is they still rely on old Kazushige Nojima. lot of stuff people complaint are due to him. they also need to break away from old guard like Motomu Toriyama. lot of weird stuff in 13 and 7 remake are by him. these veterans can serve as mentor for next projects.

Welp ... time to wait for FF18 I guess.. clueless SE remains clueless

I feel like from FFXIII to FFVII Remake to Rebirth and Revelation, there is clearly pretty incredible growth/refinement in battle system approach, overworld traversal, atmosphere, story telling and character interaction. I'd absolutely love it if Hamaguchi is in charge of FFXVII.

I still think FFXIII is as flawed now as on release, I just appreciate the things it did well more than I did back then.
And I'm a big fan of the FFVII Remake series.

This game still oozes atmosphere and looks incredible

I'm not against Hamaguchi, but I could be very down with Yoko Taro.

I actaully think Toriyama is great too.

Just keep it away from Yoshi-P, please.
Technically, Yoshi-P didn't direct FF16. He was the producer and Hiroshi Takai and Kazutoyo Maehiro were the directors. I think his team had too much on their plate trying to finish Endwalker and pump out FF16 at the same time. Creative Studio 3 seems pretty solid otherwise.

I would like to see the ff7 remake team. Stay together and make a new game. If it another ff title im down. Rebirth sold me on that team
That is who we're talking about. Hamaguchi is the director of FF7 Rebirth. his team, Creative Business Unit 1, is the main Final Fantasy team. Also used to be the main Kingdom Hearts team, but their plate got too full, so KH is stuck with Osaka team since Birth by Sleep.

i rly wish Naoki Yoshida is in some form involved too at least as a producer or creative director role! and please let soken be the composer. CS3 is my fav dev team in SE since Sakaguchi days can't stand anymore the combo Kitase/Nomura and their sons (=hamaguchi) :_ too much anime crap and it seems they never really understood what made the old ffs so magical (which imho ff14 does perfectly and somehow ff16 did too even with all its shortcomings). I need more Yoship games don't let him die with ff14 🤬

XVI was trash, so no.

If that's the case then Creative Studio 1 is working on it, meaning development won't start in earnest until after Revelations ships. That's probably a good thing.

Who ever ends up directing, whatever. I just hope Natsuko Ishikawa and Banri Oda are writing. They wrote Shadowbringers and Endwalker, 'nuff said.

They should have just given Final Fantasy 17 to Yoko Taro. Final Fantasy 16 was the biggest piece of shit I ever played, and it made me feel embarrassed that I shat on Final Fantasy 13 when it released (I still bought it and got the platinum :messenger_grinning_sweat:)

For all Final Fantasy 15s faults, it still felt like Final Fantasy. Square Enix has become such a shitty cunt company, I have very little faith in anything they do.
