I’ve tried GTA Online a couple times and have never felt more lost in a game. Is this some kind of story arc? Do you have to be a certain level to access it?

I really enjoyed GTA V on the PS3, so I first tried GTA Online when I got my PS4 (back in 2017? from what I recall). Back then, you really felt lost in the game because it was very challenging to make money when you were starting out (you just need to create a character in GTA Online, it is only lightly tied to the base game progression from what I recall). I had to watch a bunch of YouTube videos to figure out ways to make money consistently (waiting for Yellow and Blue Sentinels to spawn on one particular part of the map and then selling Yellows for $16,000 or Blues for $24,000). Grinding this and some of the same basic missions over and over again eventually allowed me to buy an apartment and then buy a CEO Office (which then unlocked more lucrative) VIP missions. This then allowed me to save up enough money to buy an attack helicopter and invest in some of the businesses.

The game was a real grind though, so I stopped playing until this summer (i.e. nearly a 5 year break). Coming back today, now you can do everything in the game in invite only lobbies, which essentially makes it a single player game (like what we experienced in single player GTA V). The story arc is basically tied to your character making money that allows you to purchase and run the various in-game businesses (drugs, weapons, assassination/hit missions in "The Agency", motorcycle club and customization, automobile sourcing and customization, smuggling, the Casino, and others - along with the various heists - each of which has a storyline attached to it). I played it daily from late-June through late-October. It honestly became really repetitive again for me, but it does provide a really solid single player experience when you play in an invite only lobby.

I will probably start playing again to try out the new DLC activities, which expands smuggling and has made some improvements like making Casino missions available for single player (these were multi-player before). I don't know how long I will stay with it though, as the DLC seems to be more of the same, as opposed to introducing a bunch of new game mechanics/activities. I was hoping that the "drug wars" title was Rockstar bringing some new mini-games, etc. that were in the drug trade in GTA: Chinatown Wars, but that doesn't seem to be the case. Maybe we will see something like this in GTA VI Online.

There is a new career mode of sorts, you choose a roll, like Businessman or Biker Gang or weapons dealer I believe are the initial choices. It starts you out with money to purchase a business a car or two and some other stuff I forget... Has some intro missions to help you get a feel for it, and then you go to prompts like the single player game to get other missions. Or you can go to start menu and find them there.

A lot of missions are tied to your level but you can level up pretty fast. If you have friends do a couple of heists to get level up fast or race.

It is to me the best GAAS ever, tons to do and they release new content all the time. I've been playing since PS3 days off and on and its better than ever right now. Like Bluecondor said, they updated in June to where all of the content that previously had to be done in multiplayer lobbies can now be done single player.

I guess the most recent update messed with Cayo Perico heist which was the easiest way to make money. It sounds like its still doable just harder than it was before. I like the Dr. Dre missions, not sure if there is a level cap but they are pretty fun missions. Nightclub is great for passive income, most of the businesses you purchase or steal supplies and then do a mission to sell it all. I check out rockstar.com every thursday to see what businesses are paying double to max income.

Or some days I just drive around cause there are so many freaking cars. Haven't tried the new missions that released this morning. Reddit is bitching about them cause the new update is going to be released over several weeks. Personally I like that better cause I can make money to buy everything.

Anyways, if you jump in I hope you enjoy it, it can be a little overwhelming but once you get a business groove down you can start expanding into other things and uncover a lot to do.
