GOG News and Updates 2011

Out of Fallout, Fallout 2, and Fallout Tactics, which one is the most recommended for a person who has never played any of them before?

You can't go wrong with either of the fully-fledged RPGs. I'd personally start at the beginning, but it's little more than a matter of taste.

Alright guys, just installed Fallout and getting ready to play. Couple questions, though:

1) I noticed that the GOG version of Fallout is "v1.2." Does that mean I don't have to install the Semi-Official Fallout 1 v1.2 Patch?

2) What's the most optimal res to use with the High Resolution Patch? I assume the higher you go the more unreadable the menu icons become...

HEY GAF

What is Fallout Tactics like as a tactical RPG? I have played some Japenese RPG tactical games before, e.g. Final Fantasy Tactics. Is it anything like those or is something completely different?

Danne-Danger said:
Very much so, and the plot isn't considered to be canon. I'd say it's absolutely worth getting though, it's a very good tactical RPG that builds on the S.P.E.C.I.A.L. system. It's also a ton of fun in multiplayer (versus) if you have a Fallout buddy. Combat is vastly improved (with stances and ambushes), the gore is intact, graphics are improved, you can play with different races (super mutants, ghouls, dogs and other fun stuff!) and there are a ton of new perks and weapons to play around with.

I really like Tactics.

I believe you still should, won't harm anything afaik. From the readme:

Fallout v.1.2 patch (semi-official) could be used to upgrade any of
the Fallout versions 1.0, 1.1 or 1.2 regardless to the language dialect. In the
last case you'll get few spelling fixes only

So you get basically spelling fixes, I guess skip it if you want, but it's simple enough to extract over, I didn't have any issues from using it myself.

As for the resolution, I guess that depends on a bunch of stuff (fullscreen/windowed, monitor size, etc). It's really easy to switch it around, just find all the new resolutions under the in-game options screen, or edit the f1_res.ini directly. 1024x768 or 1280x720 both seem ok to me on a larger 24" monitor.

Appreciate it, man. I actually tried extracting the Semi-Official Fallout 1 v1.2 Patch to my main Fallout folder, but got a bunch of errors/corrupt files. Am I supposed to unzip everything first by extracting it to another location and then copying the contents to the Fallout folder?

The original. It's by far the best in the series. After that, play Fallout 2, which is also a very good game. Tactics is skippable, in my opinion.

Purchased Shogo and Fallout 2 for now.

You guys said good things about Shogo and it's from the creators of the almighty FEAR, so it was an easy choice. Fallout 2 seems like required reading for any RPG fan but I'll probably play Torment and Arcanum first.

good stuff, more sales please

Hmm, there don't seem to be any resolution mods for Shogo, at least going by GOG's forums. What a shame.

Dumb question: is there any way to quicksave in Shogo? N/M, it's F6.

it seems pretty funny so far..."Sir, I have my orders. Please be nice to me!".

Fallout 1 shouldn't be missed if one likes CRPGs with multiple solutions to quests and satisfying choices and consequences. Besides, it's not like as if the second game renders the first inaccessible on comparison; if anything, the games are cut from the same cloth - if one can play Fallout 2, Fallout 1 shouldn't be a problem.

Furthermore, the tightly-designed narrative and bleak atmosphere of the first game put it above the sequel, whose main plot lacks the coherence of the first game's, and whose atmosphere is a lot goofier. That's not to say that the second game should be skipped though - I found it to be nearly as sublime as the first game despite its issues.

Are you playing Shogo with any mods or just whatever is included with gog's version? I'm considering picking that up as well.

The errors I keep getting when trying to extract the Semi-Official Fallout 1 v1.2 Patch are:

Error: C\Users\*****\Desktop\folder\fallout.exe file has been corrupted (CRC error)
Error: C\Users\*****\Desktop\folder\FALLOUTW.EXE file has been corrupted (CRC error)

What does this mean?

Uh, I'm having a hell of a time patching the original Fallout. I'm following all the directions too, but no go. I resolved my previous issue and managed to install all the suggested mods, but the colors in-game are way off. Very distorted and I don't know why.

I couldn't find any worthwhile mods on the GOG forums or Google, so I'm just playing it as it is. You'll have to remap the controls a bit since the default set up doesn't seem to use a mouse, but it runs with no issues.

It's fun so far. The graphics are antiquated but in a charming way, the silly dialogue fits the goofy, outdated character models. You play as a mech and it seems you'll spend most of your time fighting other mechs and tanks and stuff, but occasionally you'll get to smush little human troopers which is amusing.

it's worth $3.

Shogo makes me wonder if/when GOG will get Oni. Both have this American-Anime thing going on.

Great, now my brain connected wanting Oni to Bungie, to Halo CE, to Microsoft, to Freelancer and Crimson Skies and a billion other games.

For some reason I was reminded of Anachronox which I never got to play. Damn it! Whoever owns the rights should put up all the Ion Storm games, even if it is just for the lulz of playing Daikatana.

Daikatana is on sale at GamersGate.
Not sure if it's even worth $5 though...

I'm playing without joystick, and I'm having fun. Ofc it would be alot better with joystick. Gamepad is kinda meh, due the amount of buttons this game needs.

A couple people had those issues, can't remember exactly what fixed them. Try switching between "COLOUR_BITS = 8" to "COLOUR_BITS = 16" in f1_res.ini in combination with/without having the 256-color mode checked. If worst comes to worst, see if it runs fine through D3DWindower.

Anyone know how I can fix my color correction issues after installing the Fallout 1 high-res patch? I followed the steps in the Suggested Mods post, but for some reason my colors are all off. Thoughts?

Also, is it possible to run the game in windowed mode after enabling the high-res patch?

Why isn't Shadow Warrior on GOG? they've got Duke3D and Blood?

That would be really great to see. Shadow Warrior is one of those games I have fond memories of but also haven't played in well over a decade, so it's ripe for a trip down memory lane.

I downloaded Shogo only to have it not work on me =/

I can see it running on Task Manager, but it's frozen because it stops using memory like 3 seconds after I launch it :'(

Hopefully customer service helps me soon.

Now that I've gotten paid I can get some games. I'm definitely getting the fallouts and I already have earthworm jim. Any other games from the list I should be looking at getting?

I'm sure this has been asked many times but...

how does Fallout 1 and 2 hold up? How "accessible" are they to someone who never played games like that "back in the day"? Will I be completely lost, or does it do a good job of explaining it all?

for reference, I bought Bauldurs Gate 2 and felt kind-of lost

Let's say that they don't hold your hand, and it is one of the best games ever and that has a thing to do with it imo. Right from the get-go you got the whole world at your feet. Do as you please, but don't expect us , the devs, to tell you what to do.

edit : atleast that's how I feel every single time I play through fallout 2, god damn now I gotta buy it for the billionth time...

At the start of the fallout games your exploration should lead you along a set path. Eventually, possibly very quickly you will end up off the rails so to speak. There is a quest log in the game but it does not guide you around like modern games and seems to be far from comprehensive.

The interface although dated still works pretty well though.

Regarding how the games hold up, the RPG elements in the Fallout games are still top-notch and if anything, most modern WRPGs don't compare favorably to what the two games were doing over a decade ago.

The Fallout games are the easiest of the Infinity Engine games to get into since one does not need to be familiar with D&D rules. The only real issue is the interface, which while functional, might take some getting used to.

One word of caution is that your stats at character creation matter a whole lot more when compared to Fallout 3 - an extra turn at lower levels can be a matter of life and death in these games.

Use D3DWindower, though I think you might have to change the settings (I had to turn off ddraw colour emulate) to get it to run fine.

Interesting. I did find FO3 stats kind-of meaningless.

I'm not looking for hand holding, I just don't want to be tossed into the deep end before even knowing that swimming exists. I don't want to start playing and have it feel completely unlike anything I've played before.

With the Quest Log, does it at least tell you where you may need to go? It's not something where I may need to keep notes as I play, should I get distracted and leave that quest for a bit, right?

There isn't a tutorial per se, but reading or skimming the manual on character creation, how to allocate stats or control your character will help. The "tutorial" is really just leaving the vault tunnels, as when you find Shady Sands, the first 2 NPCs pretty much describe for you how to barter and what the currency is (bottle caps), what happens if you get hurt (i.e. use stimpacks), etc. But things like how armour class, DT/DR and other concepts are all in the manual. I would say reaching Vault 15, getting to the Command Centre is pretty much all the tutorial you get -- there's some combat, you loot/scavenge stuff, etc. But you might die if not careful. First time around I died to a bunch of lesser mole rats and some of the vault floors are crawling with rats, and yes, they can do maybe 4-5 damage (at this point you have no more than maybe 35 hp). If you fight more than one radscorpion at once you better be a god or something.

Tip is probably to tag a combat skill or two and pretty much jack almost all your skillpoints into it when you level up to get it to about 100% (you can go higher too) and try to max out your tagged skills at the first couple levels to make it easier.

The quest log isn't terribly concise for FO1. I had to restart because when I reached the Hub I pretty much stopped for a good while and when I came back I forgot whatever I was supposed to do. If someone tells you to go talk to X, you either do it or write it down because it won't necessarily "update" your quest log.

Ah thankyou. I think I'll buy it. $6 could be spent in far worse ways.

I just want to know what to expect. That's all.

You know I've never quite compared them like that. They are quite similar in some aspects if we're talking Fallout Tactics vs. Final Fantasy Tactics. You control a team of soldiers (that you can only switch out at your HQ), you move around on a (limited) world map with random encounters, combat is turn-based (though you can choose between different styles or go full real-time, which is kinda janky) and you have a certain amount of action points to use each round.

The main difference though is the style of the missions. FF:T drops you in a arena and the fighting takes place pretty much instantly with very little setup. In F:T though you're dropped into a huge map and you won't enter the turn-based mode until you encounter enemies. This means that a huge part of the game is about recognizance and setting your team up before a fight using stealth, traps and other specialties. Some missions will even have civilians and traders that you can talk to, though that's pretty limited. The damage model is also much more realistic and "simulation"-like, if you get caught standing in the open chances are you won't live for much longer. And death is always final. You have full control over every character's stat-distribution when you level up, there are no "classes" other than race. You choose which weapons and skills you want to focus on, or if you want to focus on weapons or skills. It's not nearly as story focused as FF:T, though there is some of that stuff to be had.

The same could be said for most other western tactical RPGs and Japanese ones. F:T for example is very much in the same "vein" as Jagged Alliance, X-Com and Silent Storm if you're looking for more of the same.

Quite a large one too.

A little background: At first there was no good compiled source of information as to what mods are worthwhile to check out, and googling for mods is often a fool's game. GOG's forums used to be pretty unorganized, so while good information could be found there, you usually had to go through a ton of threads to find it (hence the need for an organized list). They've really been on top of the ball since then, and have stickied useful posts for each game about the game's mods. We almost don't need a reference for the mods anymore, but it's a neat little list, and fills in a couple things you might not catch (GOG doesn't have everything stickied).

So, first, here's a list of game updates I noticed while running through the titles:
Battle Isle: New build with additional hotfixes built in
Duke Nukem Manhattan Project: New build with Prism3D error hotfix built in
Gabriel Knight 2: New build with better sound, interlaced video patch/fix, misc fixes
Heroes of Might & Magic II Gold Edition: New build with patch 2.1 fixes & improved implementation of PoL
IL 2 Sturmovic 1946: New build with official patch 4.1
Incoming Forces: New build with cd audio music
Realms of Arkania 1 + 2: New build, fixes sound problems, adds VA in cutscenes and full intro for RoA2
Septerra Core: Legacy of the Creator: New build, fixes skipping dialog problems

These are games that have been re-compiled in to a newer .exe accessible from your account page (so re-download them if you got them around release).

Then we have a summary of newly added games with MODs / games with changes:

MOD INFO A-M

Should be more useful now too, as it's much more up to date.

What I wouldn't give for some really, really old PC games getting on GOG for ultra cheap. Ancient Art of War series? Yes please.

Colin McRae Rally 2005: added game, Group B car improvements, unlock all, extraction tools
What is the story with this game?

Dear GOG.com Customer,
Thank you for purchasing TOCA Race Driver 3 and/or Colin McRae Rally 2005 from GOG.com.
As we announced on GOG.com, TOCA Race Driver 3 and Colin McRae Rally 2005 had to be removed from our games catalogue as per our licensing agreement with Codemasters. Due to some expiring licenses within the games, Codemasters is obliged to withdraw copies of TOCA Race Driver 3 and Colin McRae Rally 2005 from all sales outlets within a certain time period, which includes GOG.com and its servers.
This means that the games won't be available to re-download from your GOG.com account as of August 29th 2009 (TOCA Race Driver 3) and October 29th 2009 (Colin McRae Rally 2005). We know it would be ideal for these games to be available for re-download forever and we're working on this, however we kindly ask you to download the games and back them up on CDs, DVDs or flash drives.
Sorry for any inconvenience this causes.

Depends on what your definition of cheap is! Also, do you want force feedback? I use a Saitek Cyborg Evo Force, it was fairly cheap as far as FF sticks went back then and it packs quite a bit of punch. Good software as well, never had a problem with it. Feels a bit plasticky but is really quite robust. I used it for Freespace 2 (with the Source Code Project) and never had any trouble.

I think i would want force feedback. I just want the Freespace games to be immersive, but not cost me $100 or something because I'd probably never use the stick again.

Used the FIXT mod for fallout. Colours are messed up. Changing to 16 bit colour does nothing. Colours are still messed up, and when I go back to the file it's back to 8 bit colour. How essential is the FIXT mod? Colours were fine with out it. :s

Try Beta 0.9996 instead of 0.99961. That fixed the color problem for me. Although for some reason the game started with cheats in place. Weird.

I'm having screen tearing with Fallout, despite my video card (AMD) settings dictating that vertical refresh is always on. :\ Some help would be appreciated. :)
