GOG News and Updates 2011

Qualify, you mean. There are some games like it out there, Deus Ex and Vampire: Bloodlines, for instance. It's like those, except third person instead of first person and each game play system is less complex (or sophisticated, if you will). The world, or rather the sections of it you traverse through are a lot bigger, however.

OMG, sold. *

* I was planning on buying it anyways, but it just shot up my wishlist.

Keep in mind that there's not going to be any mind-blowing dialogue or anything like that. I guess I should have elaborated on that. Structurally though, it still plays very much like those games. In other words, 'what you do' is basically the same, just simpler. Makes it feel a lot older than Deus Ex, even though it's its junior by only a year.

Alright, bite #1:

Freespace 1+2
Fallout 1+2
Giants
EWJ 1+2

There are a couple I might give a second look. How is Fallout: Tactics? It's probably not really RPG-ish, just a strategic combat game involving SPECIAL? How is Sacrifice?

Descent is driving me mad with its controls.

Edit: Finally found a layout that works for me. It was just annoying to set up and test because I constantly had to back in and out of the game. Near as I can tell you don't have access to the options while you're playing. Got a set-up that's pretty close to the basic wasd format and got rid of the inverted yaw.

I'm considering picking up Fallout 1 & 2 plus Tactics. This even though I have a perfectly good, recently purchased set of them on disc
and have them currently installed
.

That price is so good for what you get.

I double dipped on the fallout's just to have them as well. Also picked up Castles which I have on a rotting floppy somewhere.

omg Conquest of the new world I spent hours upon hours in that.

If I buy the fallouts whats the different between that and the steam ones?

If it doesn't track time or overlay doesn't work I can just add to steam.

Also how long does this last?

I remain annoyed that Carmageddon 2 still isn't on the list of Interplay titles at GOG.
it's because stainless games own carmageddon, not interplay (and SCi aka. Eidos aka. Square Enix had the rights before them).

I remember you saying you were going to pick Blood up in another thread (the tired of shooters one? I think?) after I brought it up. I played it this year for the first time and I think it's the real deal. A godtier man shooter, straight up.

Anyway, Shogo runs perfectly fine. I had to rearrange buttons and whatnot, but you know.

Yeah I bought Blood (and even Quake 1) a few days ago. Blood is just pure fun, and the soundtrack/atmosphere in both games are top notch.

The time tracking doesn't work with non-steam games, but overlay works with almost any game you want. Just need to launch the non-Steam game through steam and you're set.

Bought Giants: Citizen Kabuto out of a impulse. I hope this is good :D

So no difference if bought @ gog instead of steam?

GoG has much better customer support, and they go to more effort to make sure the old games run well. If a game is on both services, I would prefer to have it on GoG.

Yeah I'd take the GOG equivalent any day. Love all the extras and it's method of installing is less of a hassle (lets you install anywhere and everywhere, gives you an executable installer to burn or throw on a memory card or whatever)

and come on. It's 3 bucks opposed to 10 on steam right now.

Also you get more swag if you purchase from GoG. Stuff like Soundtracks, avatars, manuals etc. Unless time tracking is really important, I'd recommend getting it from GoG. It's alot cheaper anw.

Steam price for Fallout 2 is $9.99, so for price of one Fallout game you get all 3 from GoG.

Always buy the GoG version over a Steam version when it comes to older games. Valve and the developers/publishers do NOTHING to ensure that the old games they are selling function on modern systems. They do nothing to ensure basic functionality. Nothing. They'll take your money in 2011 but they won't do anything to ensure the game runs on a machine from 2011. At best there will be some sort of caveat on the store page that may or may not allude to what the issues are. Your best bet is to look through the Steam forums and see what community fixes there are, if any.

Generally speaking you can buy the GoG version and it will run, it will function. And there may be a guide to improving a game with fanmade patches and tweaks or those links will be links on the forums. When you buy a game on GoG, the relevant forums are stickied in your community page.

If there's a choice, buy it off GoG, save yourself the headache.

How are the freespaces? I noticed there is a FS2Open (http://scp.indiegames.us/)
They are well worth $3 each. My experience with a modded Freespace and Freespace 2 using a twist-handle joystick and the FS2Open engine was great. They are two of the best space sims ever made. Personally, I would buy both and play them in order just for the highly enjoyable atmosphere the story brings.

Good. You can crank the resolution way up, too (except in the main menu). Easiest comparison would be to Battlezone (remake) if you played that. There are probably more modern examples but I'm drawing a blank. Action-strategy, five sides with different powers, but I only beat it once playing on Team Tim Curry.

I'm not familiar with a lot of the mod stuff for the Freespace series but Freespace 2 is basically the last great space fighter. The plot isn't hugely important so you could skip FS1 and go straight to FS2. If you ever wanted to play a space fighter sim where a giant alien battleship (and I mean giant) emerges from a colossal stargate located in a nebula (this may have been a couple different missions) and starts firing beam weapons which slam your fighter into squadmates then this game is for you.

The only "negative" is that the story isn't so hot and you're just some generic pilot. But the game isn't meant to be like Wing Commander in that sense.

I guess what I really meant whats the difference between the open source one by a mod community vs the old one?
The fan-made campaigns you can play no problem, but FS1 and 2's campaigns you need if you wish to play them at higher res + way better graphic effects. I think if you look at the screenshots section, the MediaVP gallery is the FS2 campaign under the SCP

So are there gonna be any more sales or just these till the 4th?

"Staycation Packages" are not actually new games on sale, but rather small articles where they talk about certain games featured in the sale. They've done it with Fallout, Freespace and Giants, so I guess that sentence means there are more coming.
I doubt we will see any weekend deals too. This has been a nice sale though.

Ended up going with these:
Shogo: Mobile Armor Division
Fallout Tactics
Conquest of the New World
M.A.X.+M.A.X. 2

Still on the fence for these:
Earthworm Jim 1 + 2
MDK
MDK 2
Castles + Castles 2

I remember seeing Heroes Chronicles back in the day, but never got chance to play it (mainly because the price was pretty high for stand-alone campaigns back in the day). Gonna pick this up and finally play it \o/

I never played Heroes Chronicles either, looks tempting enough if you enjoyed HoM&M 3, which is a favorite for many people. Read each of the 8 campaigns has 8 missions, so there's 64 levels total in it. I'm guessing the 650MB size means there's a decent amount of cut-scenes and story too, as HoM&M3 Complete is only about 150MB more, and it's got a ton in it across the main game and expansions.

I've tried to enjoy Kingpin but I just can't - I hate the early Quake / Quake 2 engines.... I really feel like graphics took several steps back adopting polygons when the hardware was not powerful to have any reasonable count.

First scene - office looks fairly blocky but the textures are okay. Then some guy with a shapeless blob of a head starts walking around and bobbing about, talking without moving his lips. All I could think of was:

auto+pilot.jpg

I'm fairly laid back about graphics - I thought DNF looked great, and I am more than happy to play through Blood or DN3D - I just think that early Polygon games are awful.

I own the CE of Heroes chronicles which contains (surprisingly enough) only the first 4 chapters. Whoever said it's basically more of HoM&M3 is absolutely right. I also remember running into a bug at the end of the first chapter which prevented me from finishing it.

Is Fallout Tactics worth getting? Does it compromise on the storytelling of the previous games?

Edit: Ah screw it for only $3 I'll stop being so picky and just try it.

Very much so, and the plot isn't considered to be canon. I'd say it's absolutely worth getting though, it's a very good tactical RPG that builds on the S.P.E.C.I.A.L. system. It's also a ton of fun in multiplayer (versus) if you have a Fallout buddy. Combat is vastly improved (with stances and ambushes), the gore is intact, graphics are improved, you can play with different races (super mutants, ghouls, dogs and other fun stuff!) and there are a ton of new perks and weapons to play around with.

I really like Tactics.

^Goodie!*

Wow, I think Heroes Chronicles never got released in germany, I only heard an announcement once.... I think I'll bite, <3 Heroes.

edit: Apparently they releaesd in germany, but at 50buck PER pack -> lol

Heroes Chronicles was released in parts, with each one sold separately, so it makes sense that it's going to be larger... I'm sure each one has its own cutscenes and such.

Also according to Wikipedia there are only seven chapters actually, not eight -- The Sword of Frost and Revolt of the Beastmasters were released combined as the fifth retail chapter, The Final Chapters, which GOG's description somehow lists as a chapter of its own. (It was the fifth retail chapter because apparently two were free downloads for people who had bought enough of the retail ones.)

And yeah I'm interested too, the Heroes Chronicles volumes looked interesting but it was just too much, I didn't want to pay that much for Heroes. That was during 3DO's period of overreach, when they were really pumping out the Army Men titles for instance, so they decided to get New World Computing to do the same thing as well... it clearly didn't work out, because within a couple of years the company was out of business. Flooding the market with games as they did didn't help. Now, though, we'd call that kind of release "episodic" I imagine... though the classic early '90s shareware model is very similar too, of course, just not retail.

Alright, I need some help. My brother gave me his computer and said I can keep his GOG games (he only has about 3). Well, I already have a GOG account and wanted to know if I could transfer his Fallout 2 game to my online GOG collection. If I recall you could do things like that with Steam (such as add games you didn't purchase through Steam on the account), but I can't find this option with Good Old Games.

Nah, you can play his games just fine, since there's no DRM. But there's no way to add them to your account.

Well, that's okay. It's so freaking great that I can still play the game though! I just started playing PC games a few months ago but before that I always wondered by people complained about DRM. Now I know ;)

Alright guys, just installed Fallout and getting ready to play. Couple questions, though:

1) I noticed that the GOG version of Fallout is "v1.2." Does that mean I don't have to install the Semi-Official Fallout 1 v1.2 Patch?

2) What's the most optimal res to use with the High Resolution Patch? I assume the higher you go the more unreadable the menu icons become...

Out of Fallout, Fallout 2, and Fallout Tactics, which one is the most recommended for a person who has never played any of them before?

Fallout 2 is the best of the 3.

I'm wondering this too. My monitor runs at 1360 x 768, so I tried that but the text was smaller than I would like.
