Wow, Minsc got modded. Congrats dude!!

But did Boo?

Congrats!

I was going to report on Magic Carpet, but someone beat me to it. I recall it being great - one of the first action-based RTSes - although I tended to get sidetracked by trying to explore every level completely and get all the mana before continuing.

Nice.

Magic Carpet, huh? I know it's considered one of the most important games of all time and although I loved Molyneux's work, I never played it that much -- think it required more RAM than my PC had back in, uh, 94, so probably 4 MB or something. Is it still worth playing?

Looking at the screenshots for Magic Carpet and it looks way better that I expected. It seems insane that it came out 2 years before Quake.

That's a tough one. I remember really liking it as an RTS where you had a direct active influence in the action, but I'm not sure how much of it was being wowed by the graphics (which were splendid for the time).

I do recall it getting a bit samey, and I didn't complete it for that reason, but what I did play, I really enjoyed.

If you're feeling *really* brave, you could play it in Stereogram Mode.

I don't see any mention of Hidden Worlds; yet again, there's no data disc unless it's just not mentioned. I do hope there's a long-term plan for these, particularly when we get onto Ultima 7.

Man, this GOG expansion pack situation is annoying. Three weeks in and not a single EA expansion pack has been released. And neither party is really talking about it publicly.

I haven't read the manual yet for Magic Carpet to know what I'm supposed to do, but just simply flying around destroying monsters, terrain and people is really fun.

Thanks everyone! Boo's in charge of all the paperwork, so you don't need to worry about him, he'll see to it!

Read: in charge of the banning.

Be careful of what you post in regards to hamsters, people!

Been playing Alpha Centaui and loving it, has anyone else? I was going to do a LTTP once i got more play time in

I always loved the early game of AC, but would end up getting bogged down in the tedious endgame and not finishing games. Admittedly this was back when it first came out and I was only 17 or so. Might be able to appreciate it now as an old fart.

Also, the sci-fi setting is neat but I felt that the units in particular lost some character moving away from the historical units of Civilization. The customization probably contributed to this as there were so many unit combinations that they didn't stand out as individuals like Civ Pikemen or whatnot.

Well, at least with the Bullfrog games the expansion packs aren't really meaningful since they're little more than level packs. It's the Privateer and SMAC ones that matter. Fortunately I want to say that most of the desired EA games don't really have significant expansions; the exceptions would be (offhand):

-Ultima 7 (this is a big one and I'd be kinda shocked if U7 complete wasn't released since that's how EA sold it back when).
-Wing Commander 1/2 (both had plot, particularly 2; if 2's expansions came out now they'd be accused of releasing an unfinished game and other DLC plots)
-AH64D Longbow (not sure if the Janes games could even be released)
-Strike Commander (see Wing Commander)
-Various SimCity/SimX stuff.

I wouldn't be surprised if the Jane's simulations were stuck behind licensing issues.
I expect they are, which is a bit of a shame as a couple of them (Longbow 2, maybe IAF, maybe 688i) would still hold up today. That said, while I usually scoff at crowd that whines about the lack of expensive manuals in modern games, the modern warplane Jane's games really needed those spiral-bound manuals sitting next to my keyboard for the first few hours, even with the extensive training (like in Longbow 2).

Man, Crusader is good. I'm ashamed to admit I'd never played it before. It's totally like the kind of thing I used to love in my old Atari ST days.

Congrats Minsc!

I loved Longbow 2. Taking off and immediately crashing into the hills never got old for some reason. I dare not install 688i

USAF holds up pretty well, imho, except for the butt-rock.

Yay! Drinks are on me! Cheers Minsc, well deserved promotion. ;)

Good to know people are enjoying it that haven't played it, it's not all nostalgia then.

I remember loving Magic Carpet as a young'n so I think I'll get it when I get home and see how my memories of it hold up.

"No weekend promo, but save big on your summer ‘staycation’ starting Monday"

http://www.gog.com/en/news/no_weekend_promo_but_save_big_on_your_summer_staycation_starting_monday

"Starting this Monday, June 20th, we're launching a special summer 'staycation' big savings event. What is the GOG.com 'staycation'? Big savings on what? What are the details? These are questions we can’t answer just now. We don't want to reveal all at once, but we're sure many of you were waiting for this and will be happy about it."

oh boy, right alongside the expected Steam sale too. I can only hope it is a sale like last Christmas that ranges across a large portion of the GoG library.

They had no Spring sale this year (which is what they had in the past), so I'm hoping they'll start a summer sale to match Steam.

Well, we can't quite be sure, but their most recent post suggests this; no weekend deal this weekend, instead a 'staycation'-themed promotion starting on Monday.

Good thing I have saved those gift codes that I attained from Witcher 2, or else my wallet would be screaming from fear. Well it'll scream anyway, but screams less.

Thanks. I guess I'll give it a try, gotta support Bullfrog. *cough*

So I still love Magic Carpet.

The sequel handles some stuff a lot better (spell upgrades) and I'd really appreciate a way to increase draw distance but I still got sucked in for a few hours. Must be my latent OCD GOTTA GET ALL THE MANA.

It's also nice to finally be able to run the in-game high resolution mode (press R while in a mission). It'll run like a slideshow unless you make some changes to the cycles in the .conf file. And even when it's working right, the game speed will fluctuate based on how much crap is onscreen. Just like in the old days!

I just want the Broken Sword games to be on sale again. I feel stupid for putting them in my cart and then forgetting about them the week they remastered the 2nd game and put them all sale. :(

I understand this complaint already, definitely. No truly unique units, just variations of a few models. still awesome though.

I LOVE the setting, the characters, the factions, the story is just unbelievable, I never imagined you could fit a story into a strategy game. The diplomacy is amazing as well, i've been playing lots of RTW so this is heaven compared to it

Seems like the summer sale begins Monday =O

No weekend promo, but save big on your summer ‘staycation’ starting Monday

There are two pieces of news we're bringing to you today. One can make some of you a bit disappointed, but the other is just pure awesome and should provide ample compensation. We won't reveal the surprise completely, though, because being enigmatic is part of what we do. First off: we're not having a promotion this weekend.

You know we won't leave it like that, right? That's where the awesome news comes in! Starting this Monday, June 20th, we're launching a special summer 'staycation' big savings event. What is the GOG.com 'staycation'? Big savings on what? What are the details? These are questions we can’t answer just now. We don't want to reveal all at once, but we're sure many of you were waiting for this and will be happy about it. Let the speculation in comments begin and check back to GOG.com on Monday!

I know ruminating on when a certain title will come to GOG is a little pointless, but after playing through Dungeon Keeper I'm really anxious to play Dungeon Keeper 2. Hopefully this summer.

Also, another recommendation for Realms of the Haunting. After finally getting to play it, I have to say the game is a blast. Great atmosphere and some comically aged FMV. Don't miss it.

The only thing keeping me from getting this one is the control scheme. Seems like a hassle to customize.

It's not so bad. It's easier to just use the in-game DOSBox key remapper instead of the game's mapping function. I use something like this and it works well:

W - forwards (up arrow)
S - backwards (down arrow)
A - turn left (left arrow)
D - turn right (right arrow)
Q - strafe left (comma)
E - strafe right (period)
R - look up (home)
F - look down (end)
C - tap to center the view (page up or page down, doesn't matter which if the key is just tapped)
Shift - attack (ctrl)
Ctrl - crouch (z)
Space - jump (a)

Not ideal, and I may switch it up a bit but infinitely better than the default.

Dungeon Keeper 2 has weird compatibility issues with my computer, so i'd like this too.
Great sequel to great game.

There's nothing quite like reading this thread and seeing people talking about games that I enjoyed when I was somewhere in the single digits.

Hmm, is it just me, or is Planescape: Torment not that longer than I expected? I even installed some of the unfinished business mods. Decided to finally actually get to playing it after leaving the Mortuary. This is my first time through, not kidding but, in this afternoon, I got through:
-did some sidequests in the Hive
-found Pharod, did a bunch of quests in the Tombs but didn't kill the Silent King for the Rats; just talked my way out and revealed Soego
-walking into my tomb and reading all those inscriptions was a bit creepy but cool
-got to the Lower Ward, reclaimed Morte by killing the Rat Mage and handing in his skull.
-The talking grimoire is pretty cool, but didn't commit to it yet

Apparently I'm already halfway or some through it? (I'm in the Lower Ward). How many companions are there, because I only have a party of four (with Annah, Dak'kon, Morte); Ignus is there but I can't recruit him (although I thought the
endless water decanter would somehow figure into it? Also, where is that Chad fellow I need for that quest?
)

I really loved the Riddling Skeleton part though, that part was amazing.

Bought Commandos and been co-opping it with my flatmate. Damn this game is hard and we suck. Took us 2 evenings to get past the second mission. :D I think we've got the hang of it now though.

Also got Serious Sam. It looks pretty impressive considering I'm on a netbook. It's such a fun game, I like the simple Doom style shooters and this really nails it. I might get the second when I'm done with this.

yay, sale tomorrow

Just to be clear, do we know if there will be more EA announcements on the way? I won't go into details about what I want but there are certain franchises that I would be overjoyed to play again.

Anyways, I have a healthy wishlist. Bring on the sales.

Thought they said there's another 21+ titles in the pipeline but won't be available until later this year.

That's all I need to know for now, thanks.

For now I'll just focus on my 20 or so wishlisted games.
