Animal Crossing New Horizons outsold last mainline Animal Crossing in less than a month.

Smash Ultimate outsold Smash WiiU in just a couple of days in the market.

Zelda BOTW outsold Zelda Skyward Sword in a month.

Pokemon SwSh outsold Pokemon Let's Go in its first quarter.

Super Mario Odyssey outsold Galaxy 2 in its first quarter.

You got me there. But Nintendo is an entirely different beast. This proves that their fanbase has absolutely exploded over the last 10 years, which is a good thing.

I don’t. That would be unrealistic, but the projections suggest it won’t hit it in 5 years either. Without some reason to get excited about TLoU2, such as DLC, PS5 patch, or a Factions mode that requires you to own TLoU2, I don’t foresee many more copies being sold. I think it’s sales are all but over.

What projections?

My projections. I knew that was going to be a hang-up.

I mean a lot of people were disappointed with TLOU2. Even hardcore fans. So if it wins you know it will just be for wokeness probably.

Also I kinda agree yeah. Usually they have completely separate categories for fan vote. They basically just ruined their own GOTY award probably by showing what the fans actually prefer.

If it wins, it's not going to be because of wokeness. People make this claim with no solid evidence whatsoever.

If reviewers gave the game such a high score because it was woke, then they would've rated Cyberpunk 2077 because it was "transphobic".

GOT = 5.8 million players - sales 5 million units.

TLOU2 = 7.2 million players - sales is probably around 6 million units.

It's going to take very long before the announcement of 10 million units milestone as the leg of TLOU2 is very poor in comparison to Spiderman, GOW, UC4, and GOT.

You don't know how sales differ from actual player counts. It's likely much closer to 7 million than it is to 6. Reaching 10 million within a year is very likely.

It was a great deal for them. The game plays beautifully and there so many smooth touches that make the game a pleasure to play, even on harder difficulties.
Playing as an archer is sublime. And the swordplay is good to the point of incentiving the player without technically forcing them. You approach the enemies whatever you like, either face-on, long ranged or stealth. I love simply throwing kunais, its a skill pleasure and makes me feel like a ninja. Lol, we even had smoke bombs, poison arrows and poison traps in form of chimes.

This game its the true package. More than deserved, well done.

The only way TLOU 2 reaches more than 16 million is if they bundle the game with PlayStation 5 consoles.

Spider-Man on PlayStation 4 only had a massive holiday bundle around October. TLOU 1 was bundled with a PS3 and it was bundled with a standard PS4 console. The same happened with Uncharted 4.

TLOU 2 seems to be selling well during the holiday and I'm curious to see if it makes it on the charts during NPD.

The game is really good.
But it is not GOTY content and I'm PS fan.

It should not even be nominated to GOTY awards imo.
I disagree. It’s my favorite console game of the generation. I never vote in anything but made sure I did to support the devs. Watching them go from the infamous series to this is great.

When the 5 million sales announcement was made, GoT was at 5.7 million players. We can calculate the percentage of sales to playercount to predict TLOU2's sales. Here are GoT and other 1st party titles' sales-to-playercount percentages:

GoT = 87.7%
God of War (when it passed 5 million sales) = 86.7%
Horizon (when it passed 7.6 million sales) = 86.7%
Spider-Man (when it passed 9 million sales) = 95%

As of November 19, TLOU2 had 7.2 million players. The average of the four 1st party titles I mentioned is 89% and 89% of 7.2 million players equals to 6.4 million sales. This... is not good. If this number is close to the real deal, the TLOU2 had significantly worse post-launch sales than GoT.

TLOU2 sold 4 million in 3 days. 156 days later, by Nov. 19, it sold 2.4 million more units. In comparison, GoT sold 2.4 million in 3 days. 115 days later, by Nov. 8 (the day of the 5 million announcement), it sold 2.6 million more units. So not only did GoT sell more units than TLOU2 post-launch, but it did so in a shorter time period. If we are to calculate this in terms of daily post-launch sales, TLOU2 sold 15.38K units/day whereas GoT sold 40K units/day.

In addition if you look at the trends, TLoU2 very sharply dropped off in sales once word of mouth got around about how bad it really is. In comparison, GoT's sales remained steady and strong, and when the free Legends content update was announced it also served as a huge positive boost for the game. A lot of people who originally didn't buy it coz 'no multiplayer' suddenly went 'well HEY!...'

I have no doubt that if we were to look at today's numbers, GoT will be ahead by leaps and bounds as the Legends DLC is a HUGE factor.

Players?

Edit - Nevermind you are using the way off estimates from that site... they data are off by millions due the rounding used for calc.

They even tell that in the site.

“he numbers on gamstat.com are not official, this website is not affiliated with Sony or Microsoft.
Every estimate is ±10% (and bigger for small values)”

So TLOU2 range is 6.48m to 7.92m.

It is too much guesstimates lol

Great analysis there 👍

One thing to note, TLOU2 was heavily discounted in 2th September to 6th September during "Essential Picks Promotion" with 50% price drop and yet it didn't help TLOU2 leg even with that temporary aggressive promotion style.

Your calculations are based on the assumption that you know the difference between player count and actual sales figures.

You don't.

Since Ghost of Tsushima sold OVER 5 million, there's no way of knowing how many copies were sold between 5 million and 5.7 million. The same figure applies to God of War. Sales figures aren't gathered the day the figures are announced, they're gathered prior. Ghost of Tsushima made it past 5 million players September 24th. November 12th is when they announced OVER 5 million copies sold.

Yeah and GoT probably costs way less to develop and sold more units at higher price and overall more profitable to Sony than TLoU2.

Maybe, just maybe, Ghost of Tsushima won because it had and retained more active players than TLOU2, to the point that it's even among the Top 10 played games on the PS5.
This is a weak and nonesense argument , going by your logic Ghost must have retained more active players than Animal Crossing or the other much popular games, also if you use numbers (since you like them) then use official ones otherwise no one would take them seriously.

I mean one game has 93 meta score and 5.7 user score. The other has 83 meta score and 9.2 user score. Guess which is which and what game deserve the popular vote and more people actually played it and enjoyed it.
You actually believe thousands of people who voted shortly after the game was released played the game.

There's a reason why you don't see a low rating on the actual PS store.

Want to guess why?

The funny thing is that there are people that don't think GoT is worthy of an award when going against TLOU2. So rather than thinking it won something fair and square, they're going to think it was "stolen" from TLOU2, or it happened because of trolls, etc.

Man, to each their own, but I personally feel like GoT deserves it for replay value alone. Especially after the DLC they dropped. TLOU2 was a very pretty game, but it was very much a one and done title that just dragged on and on IMO. Nearing the end it was hard to not roll my eyes out of my head because I was being hammered with how depressing everything was, how sad this and that was, etc. It just repeatedly felt tiring throughout the whole experience, so much so that it didn't really feel "fun" per se.

TLOU2 wasn't only dark, it was at least five hours too long. Story driven games usually don't have the same replay value as other titles, but I've replayed the first TLOU several times. Just because it has so many memorable moments. I'll never return to TLOU2.

If we use gamstat player counts and launch align gow with tlou2, tlou2 is at 7.2 million and gow is around 9.2 mill as of the last update, which is massive that difference can't be overlooked. Gow took just over a year to reach 10 mill, no chance tlou2 does that in a year unless sony really really drop the price and i mean bargain bin like $10-$30.

While player count != sales it does give us some insight into the popularity. And tlou2 is nowhere as popular as gow.

Congratulations to GoT, truly deserved win for the team and the game.

Good job by the "trolls" to balance out all the support votes TLOU2 got from the pro-trans community and the woke-army, many of whom probably haven't even seen the game in action lesser yet played it them selves.

I loved GoT, one of my favorite games last gen. Didn't play TLoU2 after seeing the spoilers before release. Now when it comes to sales of the games, idk about GoT but I know 3 weeks after TLoU2 released I could find it at gamestop used for $45. I still might get it for PS5.

Sony has already bargain binned the price of TLO2.
For example in Australia its selling for $29 AUD(22 USD). RRP is $99 AUD.
They clearly printed way too many copies. Game was on sale weeks after release and has been regularly since.

In Japan, the Collector's edition is half off. Half off... for an SKU that is supposed to sell out launch week.

And as expected, part of the media goes with the hacked or "wrong" people narrative. And as I already said, Sucker Punch will have to make a political statement.

They already wanted 90% of the votes for all the other awards with the media, because they still think they can somehow dictate, what is good and what is not and what we should buy and what not.

But with this and Cyberpunk 2077 they overplayed their hand. They already had little to no influence over the success of a game anymore (according to several industry talks, it is the streamers now), but this could really catapult them into obscurity.

The Last of Us Part II has been performing well during this holiday season.

It has made the top 10 in both US/Canada and EU charts.

This didn't help boost sales when this happened in September.

The standard edition temporarily went out of stock on Amazon, which points to the sales boost helping more now than it did in September.

It's black Friday. God of War was as low as $40 during the summer and $30-$25 during the holidays. Sony always reduce the price of their big titles around this time.

The Last of Us Part II is currently $30 in the states during black Friday\Holiday Season.

God of War was $25.

I checked Amazon and it is still in the top ten ironically right under GOT so I guess TLOU2 is the second best game. It is my favorite but it is what it is.
